An update if anyone is interested. This morning the death toll was reduced from 8 to 6 and the unaccounted for number went down to 306. Good news. The number of 'unaccounted for' in Boulder County went from 109 to 4 today. That's pretty cool! The two people who were moved off the fatality list have not shown up, sadly. There are considered 'missing presumed dead' but because their deaths have not been confirmed (I believe both were washed away), they were moved to the 'unaccounted for' list. Also, one note about numbers of people still needing evacuated. The briefing mentioned that among those high numbers of people who 'need evacuated' that you may hear on the news are some people who have refused evacuation, preferring to stay with their cut-off homes. So that number might also be inflated, although believe me as someone who lives near an airfield being used, they're still flying up there all day long!

Thank You so much for that.

It's good to hear some of the distressing numbers are changing for the better. There are always some who won't evacuate. Of those who won't, there are usually some who are well prepared to ride it out. Hopefully, the number of actual losses won't increase much more.

Harry Randall Truman, owner and caretaker of the Mount St. Helens Lodge at Spirit Lake comes to mind.

Yikes, hopefully not the same! People who live up in the moutains or out in the woods tend to be an independent lot. And many of them will probably be just fine for without a road for a while. If their house is fine at this point and they're not parents or something, their only problem really is supplies. And a lot of times, people who live that far out of town tend to be well-stocked. It wouldn't be my choice, but that's why I live in civilization!

I just got an email from a coworker that is in the national guard and has been in Lyons since Friday. He said many of those areas aren't expected to have basic services like power, water, sewer, etc restored for months.

I didn't even think about that. They usually don't close it for the season until mid-october. I wonder if they can get US 34 or 36 cleared before then. Hard to believe that Estes park is so cut off that the best way in is trail ridge.

The unaccounted for count went down to 201 this morning. But the evacuated count went from over 12,000 to over 18,000.

For those not familar with it, Trail Ridge Road is a scenic byway through the nearby National Park. It's the highest paved road in the lower 48. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_Ridge_Road

From Denver you can get there via the closed roads in under 2 hours. If you take Trail Ridge it is probably at least a 4 hour drive and involves at going over at least 2 passes (that I can recall).

Even worse, it's like 1 hour or less to get down from Estes to Loveland normally. Sigh. One gal I know had to get home the long way over the weekend (she's a nurse in the hospital in Estes) and it took her 5 hours (!) to get home to Fort Collins. Normally, that's about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs total.

That poor woman! Talk about going in a big loop to get to Fort Collins. Lucky she got through before they closed Trail Ridge though. Does she have to go back if she works in Estes?
Is SH 7 down to Allenspark open or is Estes completely cut off? Although SH 7 wraps you back into Lyons doesn't it? So it probably is closed. I've never been that way.

I was going to watch that show Moonie but missed it. I hope they show it again. The death toll has risen to 7. But the unaccounted for has gone down to 123.

That's awful that the death toll has risen. But at least the unaccounted for number is heading in the right direction, down.
So very truly sorry Colorado.

I looked at the photos on weather.com. I don't know how these people are going to recover. Some of those mountain roads take years to build. A friend who went through the Grand Forks, ND, flood said that one was bad but Colorado is 100 times worse. The flooding devastation is 200 miles long. In GF she said they knew the road to recover. CO is where do you start recovery?
