I just returned from a solo road trip to our So. CA cabin and our house in AZ. It was a wonderful trip and I really lucked out with perfect weather in both places but especially in AZ. Normally it would still be in the high 90s but I rolled in after the monsoon rains on the 10th and LOVED the low to mid 80s weather on the 11th. Mid 80s at the cabin too. Sweet! Yesterday I drove the 500 miles back up to the SF Bay Area. It's a gorgeous day (high 60s) and I'm happy to be home, despite the pile of mail and the dirty house. What makes you happy to be "home".

Everything makes me happy to be home. But mostly it's the solitude that I seem to need in order to reeve up for the next day.

As much as I like traveling to different places and seeing things/touring, or visiting family, it's always nice when I'm home again - and back in my own personal sanctuary - away from the madness.
Home to me, is like what the Fortress of Solitude was to Superman. It's my Inner Sanctum.

The sunroom we made by enclosing part of our back deck. I need to be in a house with at least one place with a good view of the outdoors. I remember the "garden apartment" I had in NJ when I moved there- what a misnomer. The only entrance was at the front, with only a small yard between me and the traffic. You couldn't sit out there. The back windows had views of the parking lot.
I bought my first house in NJ and it had a sunroom in the back; I loved that room. Later my first husband and I bought a place that wasn't really outdoor-friendly. There was a long, narrow back yard that was partly wooded, but you got out there only by going down a steep flight of steps to a patio or out a side door. We rarely spent time on the patio.
Things got better after that. After the divorce I bought a place with a pool and a sunroom that overlooked it. What paradise! When DH and I married and moved to the Midwest, we added the sunroom after we got the proceeds when his house sold. He had a baseboard heater put in so we use it for dinner every night unless it's really cold out. This one overlooks a pool, too! I just really enjoy sitting down to home-cooked food within sight of the back yard every night.

My gazebo overlooking the river. Sitting on the couch, listening to the waves, watching freighters go by, sipping a drink. Heaven.

My own bed. I have a hard time sleeping in a different bed.

I like to sleep in my own bed - certain pillows are nice. Maybe because I do most of the cleaning in my house, but I'm good with pooping in other peoples' toilets.

It's mine and I can do whatever I want to it.
It's relaxing and I worked hard to have it.

There's something that I've commented on in other threads. My body is so freaking relaxed in my own space, it's a whole mind, body & spirit thing going on. It's only in my own space that I can reach a level of relaxation & contentment that I cannot reach anywhere else. I need my own space for my sanity. My mind & spirit need my own space for growth.

Like you, I love to travel. To see different scenery, different ways of living, taste different food, hear different languages.
But I love coming home. I love stretching out in my own bed with my own pillow, pooches on either side of the bed. I love sitting on the patio with a glass of wine, looking at the garden and listening to the quiet.
Like sugilite, my home is my sanctuary.

I like to sleep in my own bed - certain pillows are nice. Maybe because I do most of the cleaning in my house, but I'm good with pooping in other peoples' toilets. it was you Yeah, baby! I live with DH and two boys, so there's a fair amount of discussion about poop. Sorry if they've desensitized me. You know the saying about how Eskimos have something like 37 different names for snow? In our house we have at least 37 names for poop. Last week, when I told the boys that one of them needed to get into the bathroom and flush that toilet , they of course had to both go in, inspect the damage and argue about who did the deed. After several minutes of heated debate, the oldest comes out and exclaims that he has "proof" that the youngest left the nasty. Of course I shriek and tell him that I do not want to see any proof. He fixes me with a patient, slightly exasperated look and says, "no, mom. I don't need to show you anything. All I need to do is talk about size." (DS #2 is known for his massive offerings.) DS #1 continues, "that thing in there was so big it couldn't even be called a number 2. It wasn't a deuce... It was a QUATTRO!" So that's our new phrase for awe inspiring, massive doodie - it's a Quattro. Aren't you glad I shared that? Welcome to my hell that is living with all guys.

You know what else I like...my own television. I hate going to a new town and not knowing where to find my favorite shows or my go-to channels. The shows the local channels show in that 10 pm slot while I want to fall asleep can be different, and I don't have my netflix or roku or the remote is different (most likely all of the above.) So, I have to figure out a way to mock my normal bedtime routine, piecing it together from all the sources I have available. It can really mess with me. I'd rather poop in public!

Yeah crap I live in her mind with POM. POM won't turn down the music and give me my space. It's not going too well. I'm thinking of moving to another mind.

As much as I love a good road trip, there really is no place like home. Besides, those hotel beds really mess with my back. I love sleeping in my own bed. Also, I tend to eat a lot healthier at home.

I like sleeping in my own bed because it is like sleeping on a cloud. Beds here in Europe are a lot harder than what I like.
I also like my coming home to my dog. We usually do not travel with him because he is big and has a lot of health issues. I miss him a lot on my trips though and always get lots of snuggles from him when I get home. He also gives me sass for leaving him, but he loves us too much to be mad for long.

Getting back into my normal routine. I love the anticipation of traveling but getting home and having my animals around. And pooping in my own toilet.
As for beds, I just got back from a trip and got used to Egyptian cotton, getting back into my own bed was like sleeping on burlap sacks. I need new sheets.

I thrive on routine so being home to have my exact coffee/meal is wonderful. I have food intolerances and generally eat poorly when away because it's so hard to know what is in stuff. Having "my food" back is heavenly.
I'm an introvert, so getting home always recharges me. I like being able to escape to the computer with my coffee and not care about being sociable.

I like the routine and familiarity of being home. I'd like to think of vacations as spontaneous and without a schedule. Generally when I get back from a vacation I'm a little scatterbrained and looking to get back on track.

Everything at home is set up the way I like it. I chose the house and furnishings and set them up. The food in the fridge is what I like. Add to that it is what is familiar. And I'm in control, not following someone else's schedule or routines. Seriously, what is not to like?

Don't worry Milee, someday - they will adapt to get gfs....... I keep waiting for this to happen! I swear whenever the boys are over (12 &14) my house is like a giant poopfest. Combined with a heavy layer of Axe.

I always miss the cat when I'm gone, miss my own bed, and miss being able to hang around in any level of clothing I want (I'm just comfortable and more relaxed in less clothes!) I act sociable but I'm pretty introverted in reality, so hanging around at home by myself recharges me too. I do love traveling and would happily go where anyone wants me to - always happy to get home eventually.

We miss our cats too! When we travel, it's inevitable that DH will turn over sometime in the middle of the night and mumble, "this bed is empty."
