Also 4K on vacations does not seem like a lot to me for a family of 4. My wife and I can easily spend 1.5 - 2K for a week in Las Vegas (Flight and hotel); with food and drinks we are looking at 2.5k easy and we don't make half of what they make.
Family vacations can cost a pretty penny if you have to take a plane to go somewhere and stay in a hotel.

SO and I have been looking in the DC area, and 800 sqft 3 BDR 1950s ranch homes, no garage, on a tiny plot of land in the "best" school districts are going for $680k+. They are most of the time not updated and squarely middle-class quality, no granite countertops, blue/pink bathtubs. Yeah, that would describe many areas in the Bos-Wash corridor, which I understand now extends past Boston to Manchester, NH. I agree with dvm's "lifestyle creep" observation. I've lived in well-to-do suburbs most of my adult life and if you decide to spend the way everyone around you spends, you won't have anything left to save.

I used to live in the SF Bay Area and I think the cost of housing and childcare is reasonable for those areas. We sold a 1200 sq ft ranch next to two falling down homes (tarp over the roofs, newpaper covering up the windows), a business, and a way station for illegal immigrants (raided by ICE regularly) for 677k. It was in a so-so school district.
My friend is attempting to look for infant daycare and is finding that it costs around $1200 a month. Then you add in childcare during the summers and it adds up.
Most people I know who make money like that work long hours so I'm not really surprised by the housekeeping - that's someone coming in once a week.
The Bay Area doesn't have the most convenient mass transit and traffic is awful. DH and I both drove 45 minutes in opposite directions so I can see the auto expenses.

Are you talking about Pimmit Hills in Falls Church near Tyson's corner?
