I could go for that. Since the head is an approved contact point, can we head-butt people too??

OMG... how much coddling is too much? Kids need to experience both success and failure. Everyone is NOT a winner and there are no trophies for 7th place. And a teacher is going to use a red pen to grade papers. Our kids need to learn to suck it up and learn to deal with the fact that life is not always fair. Agreed. They also need to learn to be both good losers and good winners. No one wants to deal with an obnoxious winner or a poor loser. How are they supposed to develop/learn to control their emotions when no one ever wins or loses

Yay! soccer for uncoordinated people. Can't tell we can't aim if there is no ball.

They could use the severed head of an enemy, the way it was played in the old days...oh, wait, never mind. That was lacrosse. My bad. But it could still work.

So what kind of soccer-playing skills can a soccer player develop without an actual soccer ball? Doesn't soccer actually need a ball to have any meaning as soccer? If they are not developing ball-handling skills and blocking skills and passing skills and goal-tending skills and all the other soccer skills that require an actual soccer ball, they're basically just running around at random, aren't they? Maybe I'm missing something.

And another thing: Wouldn't skill development be a prerequisite for having a winning team? I don't understand how wanting to win precludes skill development. Isn't that what soccer practice is for? Doesn't the team with the most skilled players generally do better? What happens when the kids get older and want to play on real teams? They won't have a clue. This sounds like a very stupid idea.

Note: The show is satire, we got Punk'd.
Troubled by what they see as the overemphasis on winning in sports involving kids even under the age of 10, youth soccer groups in Canada are doing something about it. In at least one community, Midlake, Ontario, kids play in leagues where they no longer keep score or even play the game with a ball.

Sorry...not keeping score is just as ludicrous of an idea as taking the ball away entirely.
I played sports for most of my life and we absolutely destroyed teams and were absolutely destroyed on occasion by the opposing team. Yeah it sucks to get beat badly but no one cried that it wasn't fair that the other team scored 17 runs and we only scored 4.

The "everything everywhere always has to be fair always" twinkies will get hold of this and run with it (but not with a soccer ball because that would be bad).

Ok sorry but this is insane. Once kids know how to count they know the score. I had one of those kids who played in an under 6 league that didn't keep score, he knew the score and he was right after every game. He also at 8 stated his only trophy that mattered (he had a dresser full of them) was his baseball MVP trophy. When asked why only that one mattered his answer was "because I earned it, the others were just handed to me." Time to stop the coddling!

Since the significance of Mich's post isn't immediately clear: the authors of the article are admitting they were duped. The premise is fake. No such soccer program exists in Ontario.

but the point that kids can count and so there is score in scoreless leagues isn't fake.

Thanks, Virgil..... The article was satire and that it was satire was written in the first line of the link. I'm surprised that no one else saw it.

Thanks for pointing it out! Maybe we're so used to the "everything always has to be fair always" twinkies actually coming up with really stupid ideas that we've lost our skepticism with regard to anything attributed to them. Anyway, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

That is probably from the satire show on CBC radio called This Is That. They have these outrageous stories and people phone in their outrage. kind of similar to The Onion idea. But if you suspend your initial outrage and think generally the ideas make no sense at all. Like soccer without a ball.
Now someone will probably think that is a good idea.

You can develop all the skills you need to play a sport without keeping score. I think it's kind of silly not to, but it's not nearly as silly as not having the one essential piece of equipment which defines the sport.

You can also develop all those skills by never even playing a game to begin with. It's called PRACTICE. Yes...I'm talking about PRACTICE!!

I know, I read the note when the article first came up. That doesn't change my opinion that removing the ball is not close to as ridiculous as not keeping score. That's why i didn't respond to anything about the league not using a ball, jsut the idea that not using a ball would be as ludicrous as not keeping score.
