My grandson is 2 and a half. He is never still and he goes from the play room to the kitchen to the living room in less than 30 seconds. Once he decides to play with his "tablet", then he sits for an hour or more until the battery dies and I have to plug it in to charge. Yes he is 2 1/2 and has a NABI tablet junior and his twin brothers, age 6, have the NABI. Their older brother (17) and sister (13) each have a laptop. Their parents each have a laptop. Along with the laptops there are 3 desk top computers. Then there are 5 TV's in their place. There is one 60", 3 of them are either 45" or 50" and the twins have a 13". Each day I go over there, I have to turn at least 3 of the TV's off. Plus I turn lights off. Then they wonder why my light bill is sometimes over $300. The oldest is being cyber-schooled because of being bullied at school. He sleeps until 11 or noon when I have to go back to my place and get ready for work. I have to wake him up to get his school work done and I am not allowed to leave until his work is done. Usually he is done by 10 but likes to sleep a little later. Today it was 12:45 pm until he finally got up and dressed. I charge $15 a day to watch the little one. Sorry about the rant, but I just had to get it off my chest. 3catslady: 10 NSD, 8 CSD, 5 eating out days.

Wow your plate is full but I'm a little confused (1) my light bill is sometimes over $300. ..... (2) I am not allowed to leave until his work is done.... (3) I charge $15 a day to watch the little one. Your light bill? If they can afford all those electronics, why would you pay the electricity? He's 17 and home schooled by their choice. If he doesn't get all his work done, it's his responsibility. I know it's hard to draw that line but you can do it .... I just had to. GS1 (16 yrs old) just lost his phone for the umpteenth time so DD has to put him on her plan if she wants him to have one. No amount of hystrionics will make it my problem They have $$ for 15 toys, triple your charge. I know that you do it out of love, but if it is a daily thing, you deserve more

I have to wake him up to get his school work done and I am not allowed to leave until his work is done. You're "not allowed to leave"?!?!?! This would be totally unacceptable to me. You are doing them a favor by only charging them a pittance for so much work because you love your family. But you seriously need to establish some time limits on your helping them. You are not responsible for their son's homework. Tell them what hours you are available to babysit, and you need to stick to those hours, whether or not their son decides to sleep in. And if they insist, they can investigate how much it costs to pay a regular service to babysit their son while he does his homework whenever he feels like it. You're not a spring chicken, and you need to do what's right for you too. Sorry, but this just made me mad.

Maybe I should have said that I leave at noon whether his work is done or not, which I do. I then text his father and tell him that I left and that he was up and watching the little one and he said that his work was done. What happened the other day was DIL, the one that I would like to KILL came home about 15 minutes after I left and she saw him in his room on the computer and the little one was on the bed playing the x-box. She came to the conclusion that I left before he was done. He showed his dad that the work was done and that smoothed everything over with him but DIL was still upset. I really don't care what she thinks as long as the eldest says his homework is done I leave. It takes me 2 seconds to get out the door and in my place. As for the electric, I pay it because I want it paid and not shut off. Three of the bills were in their name and we got shutoff notices and had them shut off all the time. I took them over and raised their rent to cover their half. They haven't realized it yet and I am not going to tell them. Each year I raise their rent 1% even though nothing has gone up. Next year it is going up 1 & 1/2% because I need to get some life insurance. If something happens to me, they are up the creek without a paddle. Sorry if I raised any blood pressure. I was tired. 3catslady: 11 NSD, 8 CSD, 5 eating out days.

Looks like I'm going to be able to receive some volunteer training this weekend to help with remediation for flood-damaged homes. I'm super excited to be able to help! As a volunteer on various projects, I've seen some remediation work being done in the past, and it seems very interesting. I'm looking forward to learning more about it.

so they live with you? I have a similar situation and it drives me crazy. My utilities went up so I told them their pills what's going on. They didn't believe me that the utilities went from 122 to 422. So they called PG&E and asked them what it would cost to run their TVs which run 2 at a time in one room and all their other electronics. PGE told them it was costing me. So now they pay me an additional $200 a month without question. In reality, utilities only went up 140. And I'm not telling them that. They live here under my roof and only chip in $800 a month. Tell me where they could get such a deal in an upper-class neighborhood with the best schools and have 3 bedrooms 1.5 baths to themselves. I demand quiet from that part of the house after 10 o'clock. If they don't like it they can move
On to her kids: I do pay for school functions which is where a lot of that WIRs savings is targeted. I'm fine paying for the kids but not them. When I get ready to retire, sometimes I wonder what they will do? I am NOT their safety net forever
Rocky, I get to volunteer this week too! I'm reviewing resumes for a 'hire a vet' job fair Friday!! Now I just have to figure out where Livermore is!! LOl

LOL, I believe Livermore is on 287 between Fort Collins and the WY border. If you blink, you'll miss it and instead find that Laramie is lovely this time of year.

DIL needs a reality check. Either pay you quadruple to babysit 17yo, send him to brick & mortar school, or lay off!! Her choice

ombud: DIL had her eyes opened the past couple of times she came home early. Friday and today she came home at 10:30 and he was still in bed. She comes in one door and I go out the other. The big kid was still in bed and I don't think his homework was done and I don't care. DIL and I don't talk to each other because we end up in a yelling match so to save my sanity, I leave. DS also came home early today but I don't know if he is sick, she is sick, or they have an appointment, or he is getting his sick time down because he would lose it. Anyway, I was in my home by 10:30 and took a nap. I am still not used to getting up at 6:30 and I need my early morning nap. Usually when I go over there, the little one is still sleeping and I lay down on the couch and close my eyes until he gets up. I am not a heavy sleeper so I hear him as soon as his feet hit the floor or he calls for his mom. I know this thread is not for my venting and the old thread helped me through some very rough times. Thank you for letting me vent and know that I am trying to do what is best for me and not anybody else. I am still saving money because I don't "lend" to them anymore. They ask for things and I "don't have the money". I used to give and then bitch because I didn't have enough for my groceries. Now I get what I need and put the rest in savings. I have 3 places that I save money, one of those "book banks" that looks like a book, a secret part of my purse and my savings account. The "book bank" holds $375 in ones right now. when I spend cash I put the ones in my desk drawer until I get 25 then I rubber-band them together and put them in the book. I watch a 95 year old lady and I get paid in cash which I put in my purse. At the end of the week when all the bills are paid I put what is left over in my savings. I haven't touched the book bank since I started it 4 years ago. I don't use cash that often so that is why it isn't a larger amount. The cash in my purse is for emergencies when I am on the road or forget my checkbook. I forgot to take my checkbook with me when I got my car inspected and I used the cash for that payment. Sorry about the long rant. I really need to get back to my paper journal and my online journal.

I don't talk to DD's bf either. Eats with his mouth open, pants hanging down, I'm not impressed with how long he can play 2 video games at once

26/30 NSD
Didn't make my goal, but I had a chance to get three months of cat food at a ridiculous low price, so I jumped on it. I figure I saved $50 so no regrets!
3cats--never fear to vent here! I have been here with you from the beginning and KNOW you don't vent enough about that situation. I think its is time to say how proud of the progress you have made since you joined us. When you started you could only imagine $375 as a debt and not as your own secret stash. You have come so far.
I think I found my over spending of this summer. First, I had to replace my microwave then I realized we have had so much rain and only about four days over 100*, so twice the payments to the lawn crew. Hopefully, I can make it up on less snow removal this winter.

Update: 22 NSDs and 4 CSD
Hope all of you are doing well. I have managed to surface from the huge mountain of powerpoint presentations graded in the last week. Definitely taking the weekend off of any grading after the hours done in the last week. Time for me to catch up on housework and laundry. Not too far behind in that area so it should not take too lang.
I think that I may be doing a little shopping this weekend as there are a few things that are needed and a few items need to be replaced. I had to eliminate several pair of shoes from the wardrobe due to the fact that they were falling apart. One of them literally fell apart -- cracked across the entire sole of the shoe. Hoping that I can find decent looking shoes that are comfortable.
Over the summer I decided to purchase a zipfit as I was curious as to my daily steps just doing my usual job. I have been averaging between 1.5 and 3 miles per day just walking around the classroom and the house. Now if I can just get the energy to do something else I could really get myself in better shape.
Going to sign off as I am getting ready to crash. Good night all.

I bought a costume pattern yesterday, so technically it wasn't a CSD. But that was all I spent, so still not a bad spending day.

It is October. I will set up for next month but I am coming up blank for a name. Any ideas?
Some of you who have been here for a while (4 yrs) know how worried I have been about some friends of mine who want to retire and have done absolutely ZIP to prepare for it and are extravagant spenders. I got word yesterday he is going to keep a record of everything he spends (he is the big spender) and live only on his income. No more CCs! Of course he is going to cash in half of his 401k to pay off the current balance-$13,000. I can't even imagine a revolving debt that large and being so casual as he has been.
I was glad to hear he is going to record his spending. I bit my tongue so I wouldn't say recording past behavior is not a plan for future behavior. In a couple of months I will suggest a written budget PLAN.

Oh my goodness!! I cannot imagine thinking about retiring when 13K is 1/2 the 401k!! I hope he's not thinking of the 401k as supporting him in retirement

M is 65 and eligible to retire now. He is lucky to have a small pension and some Veteran's benefits plus some SS. By my calculations they will have about $2600-3000/mo income in retirement-if he doesn't blow what little savings they have. Actually I think the 13K is about a third, perhaps a bit less, of his 401k, The big hurt in my opinion is the fact that he withdrew all of the 401k savings from an annuity in a lump sum closing it out and having to pay penalties and taxes on all of it this year. He has about $80K salary now and still has difficulty. I know they have over seven years left on the mortgage at about $1400/mo. Thank God he decided to work another year. Perhaps if I can get him to PLAN on a piece of paper he will see he can't afford to retire for a few more years. I'm hoping his spending leaks and extravagant spending habits will be obvious even to him.
What I think is really sad is that his wife, who retired about three years ago due to some health issues has gone back to work for $9 hour. She is the frugalista of the two and I know how worried she is.

Yeah, that $1400 mortgage is gonna be a killer on that income. Too bad the wife is feeling the pinch so much! It's never the spender/non saver who suffers the stress.
