usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/08/20/20110801-escaped-prisoner-shot-dead-by-71-year-old-iowa-homeowner-after-hostage-ordeal?liteEscaped prisoner shot dead by 71-year-old Iowa homeowner after hostage ordeal First thing: aren't our prison systems wonderful? It's a good thing the left wants to just give dangerous criminals jail time so they can later escape and cause more harm... And second thing: just think that the far left would rather have had this elderly couple kept as hostages and possibly killed with no way to defend themselves. Of course, they would never take any responsibility for the couples' deaths if that had happened. And third thing: why wasn't the 71 yr old arrested? He shot someone, right? I expect the left to be in an uproar over allowing this man to just be let go without charges.

Seems a little unnecessary. If the old dude was free enough to get his shotgun you'd think they could have just gotten in the car and left.

I have guns hidden around the house too. I have to use the restroom now before I finish this discussion. What could a decrepit old man like me possibly do ? I'm afraid.

It depends on where they were being kept and where the shot gun was located in the house. If they were being kept in the same room as the shotgun, then pretty poor choice by the criminal...
It sounds like the old couple were waiting him out, though, hoping he'd just take what he wanted and leave...but after 4 hours they didn't think it was looking too good for them.

(from link in the OP) So should anyone found guilty of any crime be put to death instead of "just give(n) jail time ..."?

And not all of them were just arrested for burglary. And why is it criminals are even able to escape? Because we let them out of the cells. That actually causes most of the issues with prisons.

People who have never been under this kind of stress always say someone SHOLD have done something else. Ever heard of the saying, 'Don't judge a brave until you walk in his mocs for 6 months.'

They are out of their cells, but it's not like a free for all where they run around frolicking in the grass.

has anyone proposed taking away shotguns? Yes Who? I've heard about handguns and assault rifles and sawed off shotguns, but not your regular run of the mill shotgun.

Right because no one comes out of our current prison system crazy or angry or even more dangerous than when they went in...

That left wing loon being Crazy Uncle Joe Biden.

keeping them in cells causes problems too. Social isolation makes people crazy and angry. When they eventually get out of prison, it's not good. And you can't keep everyone there for life. Have you ever actually been in a prison? I have. They are out of their cells, but it's not like a free for all where they run around frolicking in the grass. Right because no one comes out of our current prison system crazy or angry or even more dangerous than when they went in... You are correct, some do. Or they were angry and/or crazy when they went in (but the mental health issues of criminals is for another discussion). However, we know keeping them in cells makes them even more antisocial, it does not address their substance abuse issues, it does not address their mental health issues, and it does not offer them any job training. Why isolate them when we know how bad it is? Don't we at least try to rehabilitate them? I'm not saying the current system is great at rehabilitation, but it's better than sticking them in a cell. And i'm all for hearing better ways to rehabilitate, if they can be rehabilitated. Some are just anti social violent asshats who should be locked up for life.

You might want to be considering those loonies keep getting elected by your fellow democrats..and keep calling for their opposition to be ousted.

Unless you want all felons executed. Be prepared for the system to come to a crashing halt.......

I think the NY dems are pretty moderate on guns.

Not sure why this particular individual was in such a facility. Seems to be a bit of a stretch to place the blame for that on lefties against the death penalty.

Shouldn't all prisons have "maximum" security? Isn't the point of sending someone to prison so they can't get out until their time is served? So why would we put people in a prison that has lesser security?

So why would we put people in a prison that has lesser security? It has to do with the cost of building the prisons and staffing ratios. Minimum security prisons are much cheaper to build and operate. Different inmates have different security risks.

who said anything about limiting your ability to bear arms? the ONLY suggestion i made is that if you blow some innocent kid away, you should be held to task for that. edit: i am one of those "personal responsibility" Republicans.
