I had an acquaintance that used the pull out method. She had 5 kids. Each time she got pregnant she would comment about how she didn't understand why her birth control kept failing....uhm....the pull out method is NOT birth control. BUT that is what her church taught so that is what she did.
Broken condoms: I had an ex that condoms kept breaking because he wasn't putting them on right. Thankfully I was on the pill as well so nothing happened. I eventually had to show him what he was doing wrong because his way was going to eventually knock up a girl.

HA! At first I took it as "not even trying" to have sex for a year and my first thought was that DH would really have to tick me off to not want any for a year.

The failure rate goes by number of pregnancies per 100 women, not sexual encounters... if 100 women use this method for a year, 15 - 24 will end up pregnant at some point. What is the comparison number for not even trying? The rate of pregnancy for 100 women using no bc is 85%. womenshealth.about.com/cs/birthcontro1/a/pregratebcmeth.htmETA the pull out method is listed as 19% on womenshealth which is less than other methods like spermacide.

Yeah, I don't know if I buy the whole 'using nothing' thing... I have friends who will say they use nothing, its god's will... But in reality they use Billings he opposite way I do... They know when they are ovulating, nd they want to get pregnant.

Shocker. It's scary how much ignorance is still out there when it comes to sex. But no, we don't need education we just need to tell them don't do it till you're married. I've never understood why teaching about birth control has anything to do with marital status. Whether you are married or not, you need to understand how the body works. The abstinence-only crowd seems to forget that even if kids wait until they are married to have sex, they'll still need to know about birth control.

You tell the guy you are not on the pill.....and you can't go any further. Then he will miraculously find something in his wallet.....
If not, you excuse yourself saying delicately that you may be able to find something....... and go to the huge stash you keep under the bed

I meant about jumping each other in Health class. My HS Health Teacher was an ugly old pervert so I wouldn't have been removing any article of clothing in his presence anyway.

Oh, not my HS health teacher. He was HOT! - only 26 yrs old... Plus it seemed like all the hot guys were in that class as well. I remember learning about STDs and condoms (percentage of how well they work), and one guy raised his and hand asked "well, what if I use two."

High school boys probably ought to use two anyway. This reminds me of one time in high school when my father had a dream that I was pregnant and woke up mad at me. He came to talk to me and said "If you are having sex you need to use two forms of birth control that are each 100% effective. And since there are no forms of birth control that are 100% effective, use three!" That was the extent of "the talk" in my house.

And it worked - I never once had a romantic illusion of having a cute baby.

I really think shopping at Wal-Mart in high school and watching the movie "For Keeps" kept me from having sex until I was 18 (well, not counting oral sex that is ). And when I did start having sex thank goodness for Planned Parenthood. Those FREE condoms and low cost birth control pills saved me and just about every other female I knew from an unwanted pregnancy.

My epiphany came while I was babysitting in HS. We still lived on base and one night I was sitting a 2 year old while dad worked and mom went to a baby shower.
The sofa stunk of urine, I wouldn't sit on it it smelled so bad. So I sat at their cheap, uncomfortable dining room table and watched their expensive electronics. Child's room stunk of urine and she was not a happy camper when she woke up and found mommy gone. Mom was supposed to only be gone 2 hours and be home by 9. I called the number she left at 10:30 only to find that the shower had ended around 8:30 and I had woken the hostess up. Dad finally got in after midnight and told me 'my wife hired you, you need to get your money from her'. He wouldn't take me home, so I had to get my dad out of bed to pick me up.
While I was waiting for someone to come home, all I could think of was that this was the absolute last way I wanted to live and the fastest way to wind up like this was to wind up pregnant. As PP had been run out of town, 2 years earlier, getting contraception was not easy.
I guess my epiphany cost me about the$10 I got stiffed.

I had a friend who claimed she was an "expert" at natural family planning. She told me that if DH & I ever wanted to try it, she'd be glad to give me advice. Guess who was pregnant the following year? (She had a girl.)

That strikes me as a really high number. Does that "not using birth control" number actually include people who are actively trying to get pregnant and even those who are taking fertility meds?

I've taken to smiling and nodding any time someone tells me about an "oops" baby. If you don't want a baby, you make sure there is protection. If your careless, you might as well call it trying. The condom broke usually means we don't always use them (or misuse them), I am on the pill usually means I forget to take them, using any other method usually means I'm okay with having a baby but my partner isn't on board. Even in those cases I roll my eyes when the partner plays victim. If you leave protection entirely up to a partner you don't trust to use protection, you don't understand how babies are made and shouldn't be having sex.
I'm sure there are some wonder babies due to bad pill batches, or faulty condoms, but the number of oops and the stats just don't add up.

Studies have shown a 100% success rate when used in conjunction with a fake name.

They've done tests on the withdrawal method- when done perfectly, it has a success rate similar to condoms. Diaphragms are much less effective and no one mocks them as used only by people who want to get pregnant.
That said, I wouldn't use JUST withdrawal unless I'm OK with an oops. I wouldn't use JUST condoms either.

And if he's a second too late you aren't using any birth control at all. I don't see how that could possibly go wrong...

That first percentage sounds waaaay too high. Even when actively trying, you only have about a 25% chance of conceiving each time, so that has to be wrong or the data is being misinterpreted.
