I can think of worse people to name your child after. I'm not even religious, but I'd die a happy man if I raised two kids that were like Jesus Christ.
The weird part to me is how much pressure that must be for the kids. You'll never live up to your namesake, he was the only perfect man in the history of the world, and the son of a god. I mean really, no matter how much you bust your ass in school, or what you do after, you aren't ever going to measure up. That would be a tough name to carry.

I don't think the judge overstepped her bounds. If the parents could have pulled their heads out of their heinies long enough to agree on their child's welfare, this never would have happened and they could have named him anything they wanted.
But no - they got the courts involved. Once you capitulate your parental authority and invite a court and a judge to make a decision for you, you cannot then turn around and cry foul or say that boundaries were overstepped.

I never heard of the surname "DaShawn" before. I'm pretty sure it isn't an Irish surname, and it definitely is neither Italian or Polish...

I dont really think Messiah is that bad. He could always try out fo the NFL. I mean, compared to Barkevious Mingo and D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Messiah is as normal sounding as Jim or Tom. I often wonder what the hell some parents are thinking when they name their kids though...Barkevious ? Really ?

They aren't called JESUS, it's pronounced HEY SUSE. Yes, zib, they are called Jesus and they're called Jesus in honor of Jesus Christ. The difference is only in pronunciation. An egg, in French, is an oeuf. It's still an egg. mmhmm, You're right about this, but you don't see El Mesías, or Jesucristo.

Names carry implications to some people, not to others. Some people had the same inference with the name Neo... Which became popular after the matrix. While others just liked Keanu. I have no problem with the name messiah.. except his nickname will be Mess, or some derivative.

Still "Messiah" carries with it implications that Jesus (hay soos) does not. No, it doesn't - in and of itself, paul. It may carry implications to you, but it doesn't do so for everyone ... anymore than Jesus, used as a name, does. There is no difference between the two, really. They both refer to the same entity. If you want to read something into one of the two that you don't read into the other, that problem is yours, not that of the baby's mother.

Looking beyond the chosen name, what "right" is it of a judge to dictate to parents what they can and cannot name their children? Used to be, this was a free country. Whether or not I like the name is irrelavent.

That, to me, is the point, doc. I can't imagine what this judge was thinking by taking it upon herself to pronounce a child's name unfit and rename same child to her personal liking. I hope this case is taken to a higher court. It seems so unimportant, until you consider the underlying message.

Ooooh, that poor kid! However, it is certainly the right of the parent to name their own child. Now, if little Badass grows up to be huge Badass, I hope his father is ready for the drubbing he's likely to receive.

Whereas on this day, the thirteenth day of August, in the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand and Twelve, Paul, mmhmm, and the ACLU did so agree that a child may be named any name that parents and/or legal guardians may choose, a celebration will be in held in the form of a toast at the stroke of midnight tonight and every year on this day.

Midnight?? Dude... I barely make it to 5 most days, I'm not putting off drinking until midnight one day a year just because of one wacky Tennessee judge.

Damn. My comments were lost. I explained that my FIL's name is Jesus. I actually never have had him confused with our Lord Jesus. Forget the rest of my story. I am ready to go home. Sorry.

They aren't called JESUS, it's pronounced HEY SUSE. It's all in the inflection/pronunciation - but it means the same thing.
Messiah isn't any more odd than the mother's name "Jaleesa".
If I told you MY real first name, you'd find it unusual or "odd" as well.

Judge totally abused her power. Even sadder then her ruling is that she wil continue to sit on the bench and continue to trample over anyone she has personal issues with rather then interpreting the law.

Well, if we started impeaching officials for violating their oath we'd have anarchy. Which wouldn't be so bad.

His parents are in a court room because they can't agree on a name, and one of the ones they considered was Messiah. I'm thinking the kid is going to have bigger problems than the name his parents call him before he's old enough to go by something of his choosing.
