With what is happening in the Middle East, different ideas have surfaced as the talking heads mention possible future arising there and Syria is broought up as one. This article is about a punishment just handed down, a 17 year ood gar, jailed for two years, know sentenced , five years..for what? Blogging. If they can issue a punishment for this type of action, it might give us a idea as to how they would react against demonstrations against the regime in power. ---------------------------------------------------------------- english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/02/201121514319413714.html--------------------------------------------------------------- Middle East Schoolgirl blogger jailed in Syria Teenage blogger accused of spying for a foreign country sentenced to five years in jail after a closed-door hearing. Governments are clamping down as the internet helps mass protests spread through the Middle East [GALLO/GETTY] A Syrian court has sentenced a teenage blogger to five years in prison on charges of spying for a foreign country. Tal al-Mallouhi was 17 when she was arrested in 2009 and has been held by authorites for the past two years. Human rights groups said her long jail term was another sign of an intensifying crackdown on opposition in Syria, in the wake of the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. Al-Mallouhi had written articles on her blog saying she yearned to play a role in shaping the future of Syria, which has been under the control of the Baath Party for the last 50 years. She had also asked Barack Obama, the US president, to do more to support the Palestinian cause. It was not clear whether her arrest was connected to the blog, but a security court charged her several months ago with "revealing information that should remain hushed to a foreign country". ----------------------------------------------------------------------- {click on link to go to article}

<<"revealing information that should remain hushed to a foreign country">>
I really have to wonder what kind of national secrets a 17 year old girl would be privy to in Syria.

For a charge of spying, that's a pretty light sentence. If you want to talk tough sentences, how 'bout this one I read yesterday...about an American guy that fell victim to the recession and, in desperation, got involved with drugs in Indonesia.... A year later, Amado sent a vague e-mail about being in trouble: "I'm in a heck of a position. Some day I'll tell you about it."
Sitting at his dining room table in Ocala with a Gators football game on TV, Kniehase Googled "Frank Amado" on his laptop.
"When I saw what came up, I nearly fell out of my chair," he said.
In front of him was a photo of his friend in handcuffs and this headline: "American Sentenced to Death."
His heart pounding, Kniehase scanned the story. In October 2009, it said, Amado was arrested getting into a cab in Jakarta with about a pound of crystal meth. In his apartment, police found 11 more pounds. Amado confessed to storing the drug in his South Jakarta apartment and also to taking some to a distributor.
According to the article, he was the only American ever on death row in Indonesia.
Kniehase was dumbfounded. Apparently his old pal had managed to get a computer in his prison cell and had been e-mailing him for a year without mentioning his arrest or conviction, much less his death sentence.
The next night, Kniehase e-mailed Amado: "I've read about you. How are you going to get out of this mess?"
Amado wrote back: "I don't know." Indonesia's top court last hope for former Dunedin man on death row

A lb on him, 11 lb's in the apartment, this is major, major handling I think. No knowing about this drug, what is considered large quantities as in dealing, but aren't the amounts sold on the street tiny amounts in tiny plastic bags? This is /seems a hugh amount of the product. In other words, caught with this amount of product you are in the big time in distribution. His friend seems to be in deep doo doo. Penalty to us harsh, to them, to keep in Prison , what , 15/20 years, the cost of...better to just solve the problem quickly. Some how the young lady, from the article posted, the miscarrage and penalty of justice , seems to be more apparent, at least to me.

Like....Who wouldn't start dealing crystal meth if "desperate due to the recession." And what better place than Indonesia? Law of supply and demand, you know. I guess he was too proud to go "murder for hire." My God! That's not comparable to someone getting jailed for emailing ~ unless of course, the young lady had access to Syria's vital national security information. FWIW, I travel a lot and I can assure you that your "civil rights" aren't worth warm spit in most parts of the world out of the US. Better watch your P's and Q's.

Apparently somebody is demanding... Death is a more appropriate sentence for drug dealing than a few years in prison for "spying"? "A prosecutor told me $50,000 would get me a 15-year sentence, but I didn't have it," Amado said. Is this also appropriate for such a heinous crime so deserving the death sentence too? I agree. When in a foreign country, if you don't follow their laws, be prepared to suffer the consequences. Comparably speaking, a lot of laws in third world countries are archaic, penalties are harsh and justice is rarely fair. I'm fine keeping my happy American ass on my side of the globe where it belongs, thank you.

Agree Safe, I don't travel abroad anymore , thinking UK this summer but the wedding is going to make it pricy, we are thinking Ireland, but when I did, have a close cousin, retired now , State Department , and he sat me down, actually we were spending a nice summer weekend at the lake, over a few vodca Martinis, and explained the do' and don't and I was very careful of what I packed and didn't regarding RX's.. any possible contaband, though one trip to Israel , visited relatives, they , airport officials , didn't register my cam corder and cousin pleaded with me to give to him to see what he could get for it on the mkt, after I mentioned that, thinking the rules had changed, they hadn't, did, he split, made a nice $ toward the trip, those things were being carefully gov't taxed to keep $ being spent on imports at the time. Got to tell you , I was nervouse as hell as I checked out of the country and went through security in boarding thinking, "they'll get me " I am going to kill my cousin if they do. ;D
