If it was a Harassment issue, I'd think they'd send teams of their own people.
Its probably more the not canceling orders, I can have a definitive answer before I leave the house, issue.
Still think its short sighted.

Everyone knows that women shouldn't make construction and money decisions on their own.

I filled out an online request for a window estimate. The email they sent said a rep from the company would be calling to set up an appt. Please be sure to have both decision makers at the appt. When the lady called and left a message she said the same thing. I sent an email back saying DH and I could not be here at the same time. I thought someone would come out and take measurements, then send a written estimate for DH/me to discuss, so please take our contact info out of their system.
I am sure they wanted us to sign a contract right then. Yes, I know we have 3 days to cancel, but if someone asks for a deposit, good luck on getting it back in 3 days.

We were doing a big home improvement project $$$, years ago. We had people to come out and take measurements, give us an estimate. One guy wanted to come in the house afterwards. We thought he just wanted to come in and sit down while he figured up everything. He starts talking and writing up a contract, then turns it around for us to sign. We said we aren't signing anything tonight, we are just in the process of getting quotes. He was not happy, wanted to know why we didn't tell him that earlier. He was there for a while, we had not eaten supper, my kids were small (I had parked them in front of the TV), it was a school night, lots to do and DH had to finally ask him to leave.
Saw his name in the paper a few years later where he owed thousands of $$ in back taxes.

When getting landscape estimates, we ran into that a lot. It didn't bother me because they were flexible in times they would come (after work or Saturdays).

Geez, I guess I'm screwed since I don't have a husband . I totally agree that it most likely has to do with decision makers and the fallout of talking to only one vs. both. But just think, if you call and let them know that the way it's being conveyed is extremely insulting, said person might through in half a window (I hear windows are crazy expensive, so probably wouldn't get a whole one) for the pain and suffering you received from their employee.

The real reason the want all decision makers home is so they can do the high pressure sale. Give you the "today only" price. It has nothing to do with sexism.

This exact thing happened to me too. I wonder if dh had been home instead of me, if they would have told him "your dw needs to be there for the appointment"? I had this happen with house siding. They wouldn't come out unless we were both there. Not even to talk just to me without my wife. I think they want to play each of you against the other in deciding and pricing. Finally after 2 reschedules he came out. When I declined his estimate he started talking about a sale price and he could cut us a deal if we agreed he could show the work to others as an example. I told him to go away since he couldn't give me a real estimate.

When I was a single mother I had plenty of male tradespeople come to my house. I was the decision-maker. Period. OTOH, since I got married, DH has done all the work getting estimates and doing research because I work FT and he's retired. I don't think anyone has demanded that we both be there and the times I've happened to be working at home, we've never gotten any high pressure tactics. DH gets recommendations off of Angie's List so maybe we don't get the scam artists.
