I think I have fallen in love (eh, I mean lust) with Wentworth Miller We just finished the first season of Orange is the new Black - or something like that. I have the DTs now for the 2nd season. DH wanted to watch Hemlock Grove and we watched the first episode last night. What say you? I have Orange is New Black in my queue but haven't started watching it yet. I couldn't get into Hemlock Grove. I only watched 2 episodes. It didn't flow well or something to me.

So far I'm "Meh" on Hemlock Grove. DH said let's give it another watch or two and if it doesn't get better will try Damages next or something else that the name escapes me. LOL!
Hemlock Grove seems a bit like Grimm to me so far but I'll try to be patient if DH likes it.

You sound a little lukewarm on it. So, not a 5-star thumbs up? Maybe 4.5 stars. But we did polish the entire season off in about 4 nights if that tells you anything. When we watched Weeds and TruBlood and Mad Men it was like we were on crack until the next show. So maybe the bar is set too high now for us or we need a bigger fix. I have a sinus headache and it's been raining all day so I'm not as Woo Hoo!! as I usually am.

I've wondered this for a while. Why are so many people fascinated by celebrities? I'm talking about this so called "news," like so and so is having a baby, getting married, has drug problems ect. Sometimes it can be even more ridiculous, such as two celebrities caught in the same dress (ZOMG!) Or perhaps it could be "the best and worst dressed at the Grammies." Why do people give a flying crap what these people do? I don't know them, why should I care more about them than anyone else I've never met? I bet I wouldn't recognize the vast majority of them if we met on the street. I am fascinated by celebrities & I admit it. I could never learn all those lines that they say in a movie & I think it's great that some people are able to. I also think that it's great that some people are able to earn the amounts of money that they do. Having said that I do wonder: 1. Why do people listen to what they say on anything besides making movies? I mean if I want to learn about fishing I don't go ask a bear hunter. Heck the amount of money that they make tells me right off that they probably have none of the same problems that I have so why would I listen to them? 2. I also wonder why a lot of them have to wear shear tops & no bra's so that boobs are clearly in view? Do they have a need to display them (like a sickness)? Do they think that perky nipples will get them acting parts (Romeo Romeo, look at my perky nipples)? Is there something that they all sign saying that if they become stars they are required to not wear underwear in public places? I wonder that stuff.

I don't see the appeal of most celebrities or pseudo celebrities. I think there are people that are talented at what they do. Truth be told I'd geek out way more over meeting Joss Whedon than I would someone like Beyoncé or anyone like that.
We've been communicating with DS' German Partner lately (he lives with us for a few weeks this fall and DS goes to live with his family for a few weeks next summer). This kid is fascinated by American celebrities. In an email today he asked DS "Who are your favorite celebrities?" DS came out and asked "how do I respond to that? who are celebrities I like?"
DH told him to tell the kid that he liked Simon Pegg and watching Dr Who and list a few authors that he likes. DS is completely oblivious to most celebrities. He'll ask after watching Avengers if that was the same guy that played Iron Man in the Iron Man movies. Although he has a complete and mildly irrational hatred of both Katy Perry and Rachel Ray.

IDK Oldtex- he has hated Rachel Ray for years. He used to love watching cooking shows (wanted to be a chef when he was like 11 or 12) and has hated Rachel Ray since then. He thinks Katy Perry is a talentless airhead. My niece and nephew love Katy Perry so I keep a cd of her in the car for when one of them is in my car. So DS has had to hear her songs many many times and he is not a fan. My son isn't a typical teenager. He doesn't understand or get into pop culture. He doesn't watch more than maybe an hour of tv a week. He couldn't pick a Kardashian out of a line up if you paid him to. He and his friends spend their time discussing politics, religion (DS is an atheist), world history, etc. They don't have time for celebrities or pop culture.

Me too- but I listen to it for my niece and nephew. I blame that one on pre-school. They always listened to the Firework song and got obsessed. I am to blame for them singing Lady Gaga's Poker Face. For some reason both moms (niece and nephew are not from the same family) have requested I skip the peacock track on Katy Perry's cd. Apparently their 4 year olds singing "I wanna see your peacock, cock, cock" was not something they were real amused with.

Lady Gaga gets stuck in my head too. First few times her and Perry were catchy. After the 100th time not so much. I wanted to kill myself every time Gaga's "Nebraska Boy" came on the radio.

Sorry but Katy Perry sings? I thought that she just wore tight revealing clothes & jumped up & down. If she sings then I guess you could say that she has a "hidden" talent.

Mostly I think she holds a microphone and lets auto-tune do the heavy lifting.

I'd rather read about the Royal baby than a Kardashian any day.

I read an article years ago about why celebrities seem prone to drug addiction. They are viewed as a product. While trying to make it big, they are rejected at casting calls and auditions; they are told that they are "too" whatever (fat, if 5 lbs overweight; skinny, if 5 lbs underweight; tall; short; nose too big; lips too whatever; hair color not right, etc., etc.). It can make someone very insecure. Then if they do make it, they have to worry about staying on top (called a has-been very quickly). They have all sorts of hangers on, willing to do anything to stay close to a celeb.
The percentage of drug/alcohol addiction may be the same as the general population, but they have the means to buy a lot more of the good stuff without knocking over a liquor store.

I care to a point. I care when a celebrity I know of passes away. I don't get why people pay hundreds and sometimes thousands for their ...ummm used items, like chewing gum, bitten piece of toast, underwear!

Modern movie stars don't really need to learn any lines by heart - or atleast they just need to learn a line or two. I suspect they do this the day of the 'shoot' for the scenes they will be working on. Modern movies are like "flicker vision" with constant edits and camera jumps. Old timey movies would have the movie stars TOGETHER in a camera shot - maybe moving or doing something while exchanging lines with the other person in the shot (think live theater). Basically, the director was hoping to get atleast one shot/take that captured all the lines/action for that scene. YEah, not EVERY scene was done this way - but there were often atleast a few scenes where all the stars were in the same 'scene' at the same time. Yes, there was editing of the various scenes/shots together and sometimes they would have to 'patch together' what they had wanted as a longer scene.... Today that 'action' would be "shot of Person A saying lines to the camera" cut to a scene of the two stars together not doing anything special, cut to a scene of Person B saying their lines to the camera, cut to person A replying to the camera, cut to a scene of Person A and B's stunt doubles doing something. Odds are the scenes of Person A and B saying their lines were done on different days and maybe even in two different locations. Modern movies are just splices of stuff edited together... and movie stars mugging at the camera while saying their one liner. Netflix ruined my ability to enjoy modern movies because I finally watched all those 'classic' movies and renowned directors/writers/producers movies.

Also, celebrities earn a lot of money - because they basically are a 'company' with a lot of employees. Yes, they get to keep a lot of the money they earn - but they also have to pay a lot of 'support people' on their payroll.

Remember your childhood when someone was a 'celebrity' and others were 'followers'...Why were those celebrities? Because they were having a character and charizma! So are celebrities. Character and guts! Also rich and pretty (doesn't matter if it is a photoshop) does it as well.

True. How many times have we discussed television on this site. Quite a few probably. I could care less about the personal life of celebrities and I do NOT enjoy reality TV but there are certain shows I always seem to be talking about with people at work and gatherings (e.g. Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, The Killing, etc.). Right now I am watching Prison Break on Netflix. I think I have fallen in love (eh, I mean lust) with Wentworth Miller its too bad prison break went downhill halfway thru the 2nd season

I was wondering if they (the writers) would be able to keep it going once the characters actually made it out of prision.

As I said, I have been thinking about this for a while. But lately it's been pretty bad with the so called "royal baby." I don't care what the British royal family does. As I understand it, they're just figureheads, why should Americans care what they do? I know I know! Once I had asked why is everyone so into royal wedding and I was asked back 'why people are watching fictional movies'? Same crap...
