mtman, this is two gay bashing posts from you in a VERY short period of time, and now you are adding racism into the mix.
I would suggest you go read the Proboard Terms of Service so that you can see that this is absolutely not allowed. If you wish to remain a member here, you will keep your anti-gay agenda to yourself.

You can always find specific examples of things that are better or worse, but overall, we are so much better off today than in any time in history. What an uplifting, positive and fool of hope post, Archie! Please, just tell me more about it...how we are so much better off today than in any time in history. Me (running a farm instead of having my cubical work for the 500 Fortune company) having some doubts about it...but ] I am all ears! (not that I have oversized ears you know ...I am more like all arsss, but it is beside the point)... So the corn is coming in nicely then?

I miss manners. Just simple courtesy. Even if you were poor you behaved yourself because it reflected badly on your upbringing if you didn't and your parents would hear about it. It wasn't considered cute to swear and use the F word like regular vocabulary. You were considered trashy if you talked like that and decent men and women wouldn't be around you.

I'm getting mixed messages here! Do you or do you not like me and are you or are you not "decent"? When people I know say the "good ole days" they are talking about when things were simpler, less hurried, and less neurotic. Like kids being able to ride their bikes around town without worrying they'd get run over or kidnapped or worse. Kids running around barefoot without worrying about what disease they'd pick up, less traffic on the roads, one earner households (an option if wanted) where you can still have all needs met and many wants, pensions, companies that were as loyal as their employees, etc. I don't know anybody who feels the "good ole days" means racism being accepted, or women getting beatings/kids being abused/gay bashing, etc. was a good thing. I also hear how people miss seeing fire flies and having good tasting drinking water and clear lakes before people polluted everything. I hope the new standards fix all of that. I don't mind rules or changes for the better.

POM brings up a good point about the workplace changing. Back in "the good old days" you would get a pension and a gold watch for your long years of service. Now companies go bankrupt, merge, do mass layoffs, and basically don't give a shit about employee loyalty. Plus, degree inflation is a reality that we all have to deal with. Used to be, you could support a family on a high school diploma. In addition, to get a job all you had to do was head down to the local mill/mine/factory and ask for one, and it paid a living wage.
And I'd like to point out (again) that the original question was not "would you want to live in the olden days" or "the olden days were really better." It was "what was good AND BAD about the good old days." It's not a black and white issue, just because some things (like women not having opportunities in the workplace) were bad, that doesn't mean EVERYTHING was worse.

Nope - everything was worse. Absolutely everything.

I'm really not that old (mid-30s), but as a dad with a 4-year-old, I feel sad for him that the days of just running around with the neighbor kids until dusk are long gone. We do playdates and certainly encourage him to play in the backyard, but it really doesn't seem safe anymore to just let him go off on adventures where we can't keep a close eye on him. Meanwhile, my dad tells me what it was like to grow up in a rural area in the 50s and being off in the woods for several nights in a row when he was 11-12. That's unthinkable now.
