I shop resale shops and Nordstrom rack. I love me an 800 dollar dress for 80 bucks! I LOVE Nordstrom Rack. I get all my jeans there - regularly $100 and I get them for $25 - $29

I'm teaching DD to shop there. I can't believe she never heard of it.

I spent $200 for a dress to wear to a wedding a couple years ago. I was getting desperate and started ordering from Nordstrom's (incredible customer service, BTW).
i bought 27 dresses.....returned 26.

The last time I spent BIG $$ on an outfit was for DD2's wedding:
Dress $10 on ebay, alterations $84 Shoes $12 DSW, damaged, loose bead so +$1 for super glue Purse $40 major dept store, drove me NUTS to pay that much in oomparison
These days after all the in immediate family events I seldom have to buy $$ dress up clothes. Next 'event' is 5 years away. I may splurge on a good suit but NOT likely as it will be summer.

for formal events I find a lot of gowns I love at Cache, so usually somewhere between 180-300, my mom usually has coupons and discounts since she shops there so often. They fit me perfectly and shoes, it depends, the ones I usually pair with them were from BeBe so they were about $140, though I have $700 heels that I pair with jeans.
depending on which dress I either wear the cheap but still very nice looking lia sophia jewelry I have or I will wear my sapphires that i splurged on right before my first wedding that XH and I spent the whole honeymoon and marriage fighting about, even though it's not like he paid a dime for them.
I don't think there is anything that could convince me to spend $400 on leggings.

I have a great suit that I got for 50% off (regularly $700) a few years ago. Since it doesn't get worn often, it still looks great. I also spent $500 on a tux, and I've gotten 5 wearings out of it now, so its more than paid itself off.
I do want to get a really nice suit. I'd spend $1k, and probably another $100 or so on a good tie. Shoes I could go a few ways on. I have a pair of $175 shoes I wear with that suit. Since I don't wear it often, it all stays in good condition.
I'm not sure that I'd ever buy that top echelon of clothes, even if I made the money to do so. Hermes has an $800 belt, and there is a waiting list to get it. Amazingly, the leather in the belt is what makes it expensive, not the buckle (which is palladium).
Since most people out there aren't Tim Gunn, they wouldn't know a really expensive piece from an average, or altered piece.

I'd be willing to spend a lot on an event outfit for someone else, depending on the event, and the... afterwards.

I spent 15 bucks on a t-shirt that says "I'm with stupid" with an arrow pointing to the side. It works with pretty much every event! Events are stupid.

My wedding dress cost $400. That's the most expensive item of clothing I have ever bought.

This is YM. If $400 didn't buy the whole wedding, with enough left over for the honeymoon and DP on a house, you aren't impressing anyone sister.

I spent about $300 on the dress, $20 on the shoes. $6000 on food. $1500 on alcohol.
You can see where my priorities are.

I have a great seamstress who makes most of my clothes. About the only things I buy off-the-rack are jeans (for those, I like Joe's or My Lovely). I found I can do just as well having things made to fit me and according to my specifications as I can by paying more money for designer clothing. Of course, my days of worrying about what I'm going to wear to the next gala are, thankfully, mostly behind me. Occasionally, something will come up; however, these days I usually turn down invitations. I really need to be here at home.

How do you find a good seamstress? If I was still in NY I'd know where to go, but in the PNW I never hear anyone talking about getting their clothes made.
I'm almost tempted to take up sewing after seeing those prices on clothes! I want good quality, but have to figure out how to get it at prices I can stomach!! I wish I could rewind the clothing clock about 20 years when you could still find good quality at places like Talbots. Now every shop seems to have thin garbage for clothes. Even Ann Taylor is junky stuff now.
OK, my other problem I think is that I don't have the patience to "shop" - as in scour the stores for great deals etc.

$400 for leggings is excessive. I usually find my cocktail dresses on clearance at Macy's. My price point is $100 max. The last couple of formal dresses that I have purchased have been well under $100. Last year, I picked up a cute cobalt cocktail dress from the Talbots outlet for $17.

You might try Angie's List, Rock It. I found mine through a friend who had used her services, but Angie's List would be where I'd start if looking for one.

Well, if you are high-society/prominent, I hope you have more resources & income than my piddly amount. I didn't even make Obama's cut-off to be considered rich!

I spent around $200 on the Ann Taylor sundress I wore for my wedding. and the about $30 on the 2nd dress I wore to my hometown reception in Texas.
I can't think of any item i've spent more than $200 to purchase. My priciest shoes are Cole Haan and I get a mega deal on them. I have a few dresses that were over $100 but that's about it. I shop for deals and mix and match cheap basics from the gap or old navy with a few nicer pieces and it all works out.
I love the cotton a-line foldover skirts that are everywhere right now... they are so comfortable and can be dressed up enough to be appropriate for my office. I can't help but think they wouldn't be THAT hard to sew myself. My mom is flying in this weekend for a visit and she's a sewing pro... so maybe I can work on that.
