And now Thyme has gone and befouled a perfectly good thread to prove that people are indeed vindictive at times. No she wasn't Vigil.

Everyone's life experiences are different & for some of us, those experiences scream DO NOT trust people. All the warm fuzzies in the word aren't going to change that need to keep people at arm's length for self preservation. Even if outsiders can't see it or don't understand it, sometimes there are reasons for people to be distrustful of others. It doesn't make them a bad person, it means that their life experiences weren't the same as yours & they have their reasons for it.

Meh, at this point in life, i am pretty burned out on people in general. I would rather be home alone with my dog.

Well, there are indeed people who are toxic or people that you don't want to be around.

When as a child, the boogie man is a real person who you deal with daily, you learn real fast to be wary of everyone. You learn that self preservation is the MOST important thing for you. And that need to keep others at arms length doesn't go away. But thankfully, we meet those that do understand & are patient enough to break thru the barriers. That doesn't mean everyone will get thru the barriers.

I don't think I know anyone who has had a life in which only honest and sweet people were encountered. Into each life some rain WILL fall. It's what you do with the "rain" that makes the difference, I think. Sometimes, you're lucky enough to meet people who'll help you find a positive use for it. Then, it's up to you.

Virgil, talk about over the top, saccharin purple prose... I would have been embarrassed to write that in grade ten.
But I share the sentiment, for the most part. People are also ugly, vindictive, full of jealousy, intolerant, narrow minded, lazy scammers and fraudsters, full of inexplicable bile, hurtful, conniving, backstabbers, crybabies, liars, thoughtless, self-destructive, murderers, etc. The ying and the yang of it all. Ahh, that age old battle between good and evil. If truth be told, I like a bit of evil in the mix (but not real evil). I like a person who is not afraid to speak their mind, no matter how uncomfortable it may be for some others to hear, who challenges the status quo, is a bit mischievous and proud of it. Everyone should have some edge. So your writings would be equivalent to, ohhhh, 2nd grade? I do get Virgil's point. We all complain about the irritations of others, etc. but without them it would be so much worse. But I preferred the part about 12 cats and no people in my box. ETA: LOL that Shooby said similar but with a dog. But that's like having another person to take care of! Cats are more self sufficient and less needy.

Am I the only one impressed at how quickly this thread turned into "I love my pets more because they are better than people"? Oh, and Thyme posted Snow Leopard pictures. And they say you can't change people!

Maybe the people in Africa have faith in humanity because they haven't met very many Americans.

Bless your heart....snark & wishing everyone dead are drastically different things. Saying I don't like dealing with people isn't the same as saying I hope everyone dies tomorrow.

There's a difference between prudence and cynicism. Cynicism can't be considered "extreme prudence" because not all cynical attitudes are prudent. A woman who refuses to marry because she's certain that all men eventually cheat is unreasonably depriving herself of the opportunity to marry. A man who doesn't trust the banks is throwing away a considerable bit of money by stuffing it under his mattress. I'm convinced that if people stepped back and took an objective look at the statistics, most would concede that at their particular location on the trust/mistrust spectrum they waste more time, suffer more stress, and miss out on more opportunities by mistrusting people than they get back from avoiding liars, parasites, etc. They justify their cynicism by imagining the only alternative is stupidity, such as people who don't respect fundamental rules like "Never give out a social insurance number or banking info over the phone.", "Never engage in an electronic transaction you didn't initiate." This is a false dichotomy. In real life, there's a world of options between the two extremes. Having faith in humanity doesn't mean you have "all the warm fuzzies in the world", or that you don't follow basic rules for self-preservation. It doesn't prevent you from being mistrustful of others, especially when the stakes are high, and it doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to watch for warning flags.
