I always apply a 25%-50% cut to what the HRM estimates I did. My heart rate was mostly in the 160s.

I LOVE my bike. DH got it for me 11 years ago and it's got a few thousand miles on it. On a good weekend day I can do a 15-mile ride and sometimes 20. I agree (based on my own heart rate monitor readings) that 400 calories for 2.5 miles is way too high.
Mine is a hybrid and I keep thinking about getting a fancy lightweight because occasionally I need a lighter one for a race, but I like that this one is durable and not a real theft target. And I have a ready excuse for not making faster times!

lol - if that was true I am burning over 1600 cal every day. Instead of my water bottle I would have to carry a bag of candy bars.

Before we keep picking on WWBG, there is a chart here that tells you how many calories you burn bike riding. It does depend on speed of the ride and weight of the rider, as well as the ride itself (flat, uphill, etc.). It is indeed possible that WWBG achieved (or got quite close) to what he claims he did. link
