No. The whole point of insurance is to pool risk. If we have super super tailored individual plans there's literally no point to insurance. You know up front roughly how much your health needs going to cost. Whatever the insurance company is charging to cover you, minus their profit margin. At that point you might as well pay out of pocket. I agree with you on pooling risk- but just as insuring a Ferrari and a mansion full of expensive art work isn't the same as insuring a bungalow and a Chevy-- you might just be in a high risk pool. My question isn't actually that hypothetical. Insurance companies are already gathering this information on people- and they're using a variety of means to do it, and much of it is just about as crude and offensive (the means) as you can imagine. They scour the internet using sophisticated (to me, at least) software that is looking for mentions you might have made in social media about your health, or concerns you may have had. They are looking for your driving habits, your eating, drinking, and smoking habits-- through examination of your pics. They are even looking for changes in your weight, employment status, and other lifestyle 'concerns'. As an aside, did you know that in most life insurance policies- you can void the policy by doing any number of verbotten things. The big two are smoking (if you have a non-smoker policy) and "extreme sports". Sky diving, for example. Now, this doesn't mean if you die skydiving it isn't covered- it means, if you skydive, you're no longer insured-- period. Might want to think twice about posting that video on your facebook page...

Well no shit- but Dark made the point before I got to it- if insurance companies are going to price risk per policy holder then what is the point of having it?

Well dammit! I kayak whitewater- not raft- so am I ok? My boat, my gear. The raft people are the ones that drown usually- and are almost always inexperienced people that swim to entrapment- not to say the pros do not get caught either, but we know how to swim a rapid.
