Some other threads have me wondering, how many of you have a lot of rules at your work? Phone usage? Computer usage? Dress code? Break times? I work in a pretty unrestricted environment. My profession has certain rules and ethics that are followed in terms of the work we're producing. But in terms of the office itself, we really don't have many rules. We have no restrictions on phone or computer usage (except that we can't look at things like porn on the computers). We don't have a strict dress code. If I feel like running to Starbucks at 2 p.m. I can just go. HR people would probably have a heart attack if they heard most of the conversations around here. For awhile I worked somewhere much more stringent. They monitored computer usage. Cell phones were a no no. The dress code was strict. No one used bad language. Lunch was a very set time and length. I hated it. I could have typed that, down to my last place of employment and the nit-picky rules and tattling going on. I had a ass kissing office mate who made a huge show of following the rules. She's come back from lunch and loudly declare, "I have 4 minutes of lunch time left so I'm going to call my mom/husband/whoever". I would just roll my eyes at her. I have worked in a non-profit, 5 person office for the past 6.5 years and I love it. No, I'm not getting rich, but things are very casual here and as long as the work gets done, that's what matters. We are business casual, jeans on Fridays and I try to dress nicely for board meetings and such. We work 8:30 - 5 with a technical 30 minute lunch but no one keeps track. We have a lot of lunch meetings and events so that's considered working. I maintain the FB page for our organization so no, there are no internet restrictions. My boss has even said, "I don't care if you're online buying shoes as long as the work gets done". It's never a problem taking off for kids things, medical appt., whatever. People can't understand why I commute 50 minutes each way for such a low paying job, but I honestly love it here and am terrified of getting a different job and being back in the situation I was before where I started getting physically ill every Sunday afternoon thinking about the work week.
