On the other hand, by your own admission, you're not kind to vehicles. So that may not be the most reliable of anecdotal data.

I think you really have to look at both. There is a reason a warranty is usually age or miles whichever comes first, because the manufacturer knows that a vehicle generally starts to have failures after either of those are met.
I have had worse luck with older low mileage. I also feel like a got my money's worth out of a car that dies at 12 with 250K on it, verses one that has problems at 15 with only 75K on it. The car with all the miles on it did what a car was supposed to do. It performed a function. And if you calculate depreciation per mile, I got a much better value.
