get rid of the hornets nesting in the vent pipe for the vent/celing light in my upstairs bathroom?
They keep falling into the glass dome over the light bulb and buzzing until they fry to death. There are probably 20 fried hornets in the dome at the moment.
The problem started last summer. DH SAID he would get to it. Then, he SAID he would wait until they died/hibernated during the cold winter. Now, they are awake/alive and filling up the bowl again. We still have some nights in the teens and twenties here so I think DH needs to take down the fan unit and spray something or bug bomb the pipe or something while the cold temps make the hornets docile.
But, I don't want the whole house smelling of pesticide, kwim?

I'd call a professional. Our neighbor had a nest living in their attic, and we were getting a whole bunch of bees. I came home one day and a guy said "You might want to stay inside for an hour or so" and I haven't seen a bee since. I asked my neighbor if her house got contaminated by the pesticide - she said the smell disparate by dinner.

I agree with Thyme. Professionals are trained to remove these critters without gassing you out of your home. It will cost, but they are worth it.

here's what I'd do. Keeping in mind I am an idiot sometimes. I'd toss a bugbomb into the room, turn the vent fan on, then close the door. Let the fan do what it do, it's a fan designed to remove air from the room.

Can your husband locate the nest in the attic? Hornet sprays can be aimed at a hornet's net from 12-15 feet away. That or find the outdoor exit of the exhaust fan and spray that. Just as they got in they must be exiting somewhere.

We "can"'move it, but it is a royal PITA. Besides, I think the nest is in the fan's exhaust pipe, not in the attic. The exhaust pipe pokes though the roof, but the house is a New England Cape with those insanely steep roofs -- DH won't go up on it to look in the pipe to see if he can see the nest. Oy. I was hoping for some easy fix, but we're probably going to have to pay a professional...shoulda married one of the This Old House guys.

GRG-try taking the dome off and see if you can shoot the hornet spray into any type of small opening you see then put the dome back on asap.
Also-on a pleasant or warm day, walk around the house and see where they are exiting the building. They had to fly into an opening (from outside) somewhere to bring food in for the winter months.

You probably want to be poking at the hornets after dark or when the temperature falls to a specific temp.... I wouldn't be opening the dome or spraying anything at them (or their nest) when they are active. Just saying... you don't need a trip to the emergency room. I'd read the instructions on any pesticides/spray you buy very carefully - as it will most likely make recommendations for WHEN you should spray. FWIW: if I couldn't see/reach the nest I'd call the professionals. If the wasps do have a nest in the vent (at the top most likely) once you kill the wasps you still need to remove the nest. It may not be very big but it still needs to go. I had wasps build a nest between by storm window (getting in thru a break in the frame and my interior window. This provided hours of amusement for my cats - as they could see the wasps coming and going but couldn't get to the wasps. I wound up waiting until fall (cooler temps) and then in the early evening I carefully opened the inside window and sprayed the next with a store bought "Wasp Death" in a can product and then shut the window. I guess it did indeed kill all the wasps. I didn't see any activity for 3 days and then was brave enough to remove the nest which was the size of a baseball. I had new storm windows installed a month later so it never became another problem.

I don't think this is a good idea. The Wasp Death in a Can I used was a stream of liquid - not a cloud of pesticide. The liquid is intended to soak the nest and kill the wasps. You'll wind up with a lot of drips and possible splashes of pesticide if you use the stream of liquid kind of pesticide.

We don't know how big that nest is for starters, nor do we know if they may try coming out of where they are trapped at all at once. If they do that spray may not help her all that much.
