General rule of thumb: Don't send your kids to sleep away camp unless you want them to come back molested. Eh....I don't know how many sleep away camps I went to, at least 3 or 4 a summer for several years. No molesting. I did kiss a boy behind the kayaks once though. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) These days counselors and scout leaders have to go through a background check, take classes and follow protocols. Plus the kids are trained in recognizing and reporting "inappropriate" behavior (at least in scouts). About the only thing I worry about when I send DS off to camp is whether or not he packed properly. He just left yesterday for a two day winter camp excursion with the scouts and I just noticed his boots are still at the house. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/confused.png)

My other concern is water safety. I think that can be an issue. I would be reluctant to send a younger child to camp that is doing water sports. Things can happen very quickly if someone is inattentive. But, having said that, my kids have done church camp and basketball camp.

Actually it was really something to consider several decades ago when most of us were kids. Crime rates have been dropping pretty steadily for the last twenty years, and that includes the rate of sexual molestation of minors, the vast majority of which has always been done by family and close family friends anyway.

I live on the Mississippi in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". Water and boating is everywhere! My kids both started swim lessons as infants and by the time oldest was going to overnight camps he was a very strong swimmer.

Surf camp required each camper pass a fairly intense swimming test. Those who couldn't pass received swimming lessons until they were competent. The camp counselor's were encouraging and nearly everyone ended up being a fish! There was a manned lifeguard tower w/ several swim counselors either on the beach or in the water w/ their age groups at all times. While accidents do happen, that worry wasn't one that ever crossed my mind.

I would think surf camp would be more vigilant and take more precautions. It is simply my experience in life that nobody is going to watch your child like you do. That is reality. That doens't mean i lock them in the closet and wrap them in bubble wrap. But, i do consider the venue, level of supervision and all of that when making a decision. DD is probably going to basketball camp. One of the girls is going to a camp several hours a way. That would be fine with me if i thought DD was ready. We just dont' believe she is. Maybe next year. There is a local camp that she can go to as a Day camp. So, that is where i will most likely send her. Next year, i might let her go to the other. You know your kids.
