I think it's possible to disagree with aspects of the tax system while still retaining empathy for those at both ends of the spectrum.
Let's be honest, if you qualified for EITC, how many would tell the IRS, "No thanks, keep it, I don't want to contribute to the problem?" I'm in favor of fewer social-engineering deductions (i.e. mortgage interest, child tax credit) but if I qualify for one, I still take it. So I certainly can't fault others who take advantage of deductions for which they're qualified, even if I think the deduction itself is poorly designed.
On the other end, I don't fault the wealthy for doing whatever is within their power (legally) to avoid taxes. Losing forty or fifty percent of your income off the top is a huge bite, regardless of whether you earn $500K or $500M.

haapai and 973beachbum
you are both right, I did not consider the impact of age on earnings andchildbearing years.
Most of the studies that I did find (after you pointed out the basic error inthe data set I linked) substitute education as a proxy for income level. Ithink that's reasonable assumption to make: <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/mvsr/supp/mv45_10s.pdf
The bar charts were interesting but what illustrates my point is the table atthe bottom of page 4. It's a snapshot of the total fertility rate (TRF) by ageand educational attainment of the mother.
The birthrate for women who did not finish grade school and HS was 3.2 and 2.3respectively. For some college orfinished college, 1.4 and 1.7. That is a very respectable difference. Iwould love to find a study that provides a direct correlation betweeneducational attainment and EITC status but was not able to do so. However Istrongly suspect a high correlation between educational level getting the EITC.
