I don't think we will get anywhere if we look to the bureaucrats in any department for agreement on cuts to their department.

<<< We are not entitled to spend our children's future. >>> ...while the young'uns pull out the "you started it" argument... while the middle agers pull out the "you started it" argument... while the boomers pull out the "you started it" argument... and there it might end... we've had at least three generations' futures spent, in some part, so far... and it only makes sense that when we pull this plug the current generations will balk... ...I almost have to bristle whenever I hear/see people use the newest buzzword, "unsustainable," and I wonder, where was the silent majority when we needed them to exclaim how "that's untenable" before it was passed?

I agree that everything needs to be on the table for cuts.
I do not consider myself part of the tea party but I am all for them demanding bigger cuts in foreign aid. It is one area where I feel we really get very little if any benefit for the $$ we spend.
I just told my 17 year old the other day that he was only one year away from being able to vote, and he would need to vote to keep people from pushing off debt repayment onto the future generations b/c that future generation is him.
My parents don't want a cut in their SS entitlement benefits, but they have SS+Pension+Health Care Benefits+their savings.
Middle aged people for the most part do not have pensions or health care in their future retirement plans. We can do a means test of SS but we need to cut entitlements now.
Being from the Midwest where the temperature right now is -1, I am a little uncomfortable with taking away energy assistance. But I do think we need to put it on the table and consider better ways to distribute and manage it. Maybe energy assistance is allowing low income people to stay in a home that is too large, too deteriorated etc etc. I know the house my sister lives in is an energy hog, and if it was inspected by anyone it would probably be condemned.
I know for a fact that there are people collecting the Earned Income Credit that should not be. So we can manage that entitlement better too.

Do you realize this argument has been used since after the Revolutionary War when reality hit that France's loans had to be paid back? Our Founding Fathers solution was not very well liked either. They put a tax on beer, thus starting the endless borrow and tax trend.

...good point, ugo... ...and this whole thread makes me wonder that maybe we should pull a reverse China and mandate every US household to have 2+ kids... that should help increase the tax base...

So which generation is going to finally have enough balls to mean it? I'd like to believe this generation here and now...but I doubt it. Our kids will show disdain for us leaving them with a financial shithole just like some of us do for the boomer generation.

Ok but you seem to forget that whatever spending cuts that the Republican Controlled House present to the Democratically Controlled Senate may not see the light of day. Some Democrats are already scoffing at these cuts and can't wait to vote NO for most of them in the senate..especiall those proposed by Rand Paul and Paul Ryan..

If someone (or lots of someones) would make a serious effort to dig out ALL the fraud in ALL the programs, we might not have to cut much of anything!

Yes, we need more government employees investigating, prosecuting, and ultimately guarding those in the private sector who are committing all the fraud. We could save a lot of money that way.

I'd be very surprised and disappointed if no one did. Face it,some cuts are not going to be very well liked by many.

For those who like to use the "legacy for our children" argument. Remember that our parents' [The Greatest Generation] legacy to us is Social Security, Medicare, etc. They thought they were doing us a big favor, but it was a favor that obligated us forever ~ and many of us think they overreached. The only worthwhile legacy we can leave our children, grandchildren, etc. is freedom and the opportunity to realize their capabilities. Leaving them unending financial obligations is not really a worthwhile legacy. It's like giving cable television as a gift, leaving the recipient with cable TV and a monthly obligation to pay for something he didn't choose for himself.

Sorry Safe..this one is so glad they did, the SS, think it was a bit before my time..Medicare..and when you reach that time, if not there already..think you will be happy..and if there..your complaining? If your set up that good, good for you , congrats, but for most of us, while set up ok..those programs, thank the lord above... PS My kids, there doing fine..grand kids..to early to tell but with what they are going to get...think they'll do ok.
