It's possible that ICN is getting both Survivor and SSI benefits and in that case, SSI rules would apply.

The kids receive a check each. I also receive a check in the same amount. 4 checks in the same amount. My check will stop if I remarry or make over the yearly limit.
During the interview I asked about savings. Was told that I could NOT have more than 2k in assets, which included BOTH cash and material items. How they decide what material items are worth, I have no clue, nor do I know how they would know. I'm not allowed to save any of these checks for college. This money is to be used for their on going costs. NOT future.
If I work any this year, then the check I receive will stop once I make more than $15,120. Not sure if that amount goes up each year or not. I assume it does. However, I do not plan on working this year, at this time. I do plan on returning to the working world, just not in a hurry to do it right now.

ICN, Social Security employees aren't going to come to your house and see if you have a stockpile of food, soap and toilet paper. They won't search your home to find out if you have a few dollars hidden away on a safe place. They can check your bank account statements, however. So, you do want to be sure that an interest payment does not put you over $2k. Take care of yourself. Give yourself time to heal. Do what works for you now. What works now may change by the end of the year. peace.

So my plans to pay off the three small debts this year has kind of already went off plan. My DH wrecked my van and its totalled. So now need to decide what we are going to do. We have a few options. We can by an older car and just suck it up for awhile. We can just keep our eyes open for one that we really want or just go out and find one right now. I miss my car!

Moo, Sorry to hear about your van. Will the insurance be enough to buy a used car? Have you looked online for a car that will meet your needs (and wants)? Perhaps you can buy an older car and pay off the smallest debt later this year.

We actually owed on the van. I know people on here are not big on car loans. What stinks is I just bought it in June so we owe $700 after they pay.

Peace, no they won't. However, I do have a SIL who thinks she is better than me and she would call them and tell them I have been spending the money on useless things. I'm sure that would trigger them to ask for receipts on how the money has been spent.
I know I will figure it out. I don't have much choice. I have children who need me to bring my A game now and so, I will.
I'm sorry to hear about your van, moosmommy. Hope things work out for you. Sometimes you just have to do, what you have to do. And if that means going out to get a loan, then do it. No one can tell you how to do things that are best for your family. Only you and your husband.

Moo, sorry to hear that. Do you have Zip cars or something similar in your area? This is where you can rent a car for a short time even just a few hours. That would make it a lot easier to get by on 1 car for awhile.

Me and the DH keep our cars forever that's why I don't care having a loan for short term. No gap they didn't offer it and to be honest never had heard about it till after. There are no zip cars in our area. We couldn't do that anyway because of our schedules for work. We are lucky in that we had a third vehicle. Its just not good on gas or as dependable.

Moo,
Could you sell the 3rd vehicle for enough to buy something good on gas and "hopefully" dependable?

Probably would not get much its old. I think we will just keep our eyes open for what we would like to have and wait it out. We can deal for a while. I just really liked my van
