I find it fascinating how the right wing idolizes Reagan and holds him as the standard that should be met by all Republicans or "conservatives," yet I think Reagan would be considered a "RINO" in today's right winged world.

I just look at how Reagan increased the debt, raised taxes several times (though he did sign an income tax cut as well.) he nominated some seemingly " left of center" minded judges, and he signed an Amnesty bill that granted millions of illegal aliens legal status. It just seems to me that in today's right winged standard, Reagan would be one of those candidates who would be considered a RINO, especially by tea partiers.

There's a lot of truth in that. I think that people "idolize" Reagan more for what kind of person he was than for his political agenda. He was actually a New Deal Democrat who found that his party had left him along with its principles. He did set some goals with which "conservatives" agreed although he was only partially successful in achieving them. He seemed reasonable about most things and was able to work with those with whom he disagreed without malice or unnecessary conflict. It is telling that Obama is studying the Reagan legacy in hopes of emulating his achievement. Remember how the MSM complained that he was going to destroy the "detente" that previous Presidents had achieved with the Soviet Union ~ and how his policies ended the "Cold War." Like "Scoop" Jackson, Everett Dirkson, "Tip" O'Neal, etc., Reagan was from an era when our leaders could put aside personal and political interests for the greater good. Maybe we should consider Obama's attitude toward the "Gipper" and be enlightened.

He didn't exactly embrace the law and this is such an important issue for you and me. If he runs for pres someday, I am predicting that you will see him try to walk a fine line when it comes to amnesty because he is Cuban. He will try to appeal to the "Latino community," by saying that we need to "secure the border first, and then address the issue of illegals already here." Which is just code for "lets make the American people think we are getting tough on the border so that they will agree to give Amnesty to millions of illegals." That is what Reagan did, I suspect Rubio would do the same thing.

From what I hear all over the place the good he did outdoes the bad he did. Lots of Republicans these days are not conservatives, but the ones who claim to be conservative love Reagan. Looking at recent history, my lifetime, let's say, (and the lifetimes of the people that love Reagan) it's easy to see why. The same people I hear talk about Reagan also love MLK, by the way. Who would you think is the Dem hero in your lifetime? Kennedy maybe? Heros can't be TOO current, have to have some sort of history, right, to compare them to. Hope all is well over in CA. It's been SO cold here-- 20ish, which you know is very cold for this area. BRRRRRR!!!!! Probably not as cold where your parents live, though.

Yes, Safe- I have heard some criticism lately about Obama being compared to Reagan. Well, maybe it is a good thing if Obama is trying to be more like Reagan.

krickitt, Rubio said he did not fully support SB 1070, but he understood why it was enacted. Im not sure, but I think he also opposes some Republicans' attempts to end birth right citizenship for children of illegal aliens. Also, I do know that his parents were here legally, but not in the same method that other legal immigrants come here. His parents were Cuban exiles who in a sense received amnesty. I have no problem with that at all, but I think if and when he runs for pres, the story behind his parents immigration to the U.S will be used against him by the pro amnesty people and he will find himself trying to walk a fine line, which may lead him to waffle on illegal immigration in order to appease the "Latino community." which is really just La Raza and other open border, pro illegal organizations. This is just my prediction. Hope for your sake, I am not right. Because I know how strongly you oppose illegal immigration/amnesty, and how much you really like Rubio and support him. It would be quite a disappointment.
