I do believe in the soul. And, i have known people to have out of body experiences during near death situations but not encountered anyone who has in general life. I do believe we are much more than material beings.

The sun was peeking through the clouds and coloring the mountain with blue and magenta. Just then, I felt my soul slip away for about 30 seconds. It was heaven. Are you sure it wasn't flatulence?

I incline towards a belief in the soul but I haven't thus far cemented it, rather it is the explanation I favour by virtue of the romanticism associated with being a musician.
I've not had any 'out of body' experiences in sobriety.

LOL on the flatulence! I don't know if it was an OOB experience, but back in my early 20's my brain would wake up before my body did on several occasions. I'd start freaking out because my body wasn't moving but then I'd tell myself to go back to sleep and when I woke up the next time everything was fine. And they all occurred while I was SOBER, TYVM!

Hello Lone-She-Wolf,
I actually would love to work on the astral projection during the summer. It's on my bucket list. I have met some people (non-believers) that have experienced O.B.E.

According to Carlos, payote buttons can help anyone achieve this OBE. Do not however, speak to the raven, it is full of evil tricks.

I never heard the phrase myself, Lonewolf, I have to assume you may be correct. Must be some sort of hallucinogen.

I was referring to Carlos Castaneda and the teachings of Don Juan.~ Back in the crazed days of psychedelia, it was hard to find a bookshelf in Berkeley that didn't have a beat-up copy of the "Teachings of Don Juan" or "A Separate Reality" tucked between the cinder blocks. Carlos Castaneda, an anthropology student at UCLA, had an incredible story to tell about his peyote-fueled adventures with an old Indian sorcerer he met at a bus depot on the Mexican border.

OBE, certainly, but it involved booze, drugs and a couple of hookers ;D

Okay, I give up. What are Payote buttons? Mushrooms? Peyote is a cactus. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article on peyote: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyote

Riding around on a butterfly while in a coma isn't proof of anything, IMHO. Just like dreams aren't really "real".

Well I can add a lot to this. My earliest childhood memories are of OBE. I've had them completely awake and I have them a lot. I seen a show on Discovery Science called Through the Wormhole that talked about these. Apparently to them it's a region in the brain that when stimulated the person feels like they are having OBE. I do wonder how much my brain is in the dream state. I do a lot of meditation and I go very deeply into it. I don't put a religious or spiritual bent on it. Some minds are able and some are not.

I heard of the God Helmet but that wasn't it. And sorry right now I can't remember the brain region. Of course I've read so much poo pooing this, people want to make it more. Could it be something spiritual, I dunno. With me it's happened in the most mundane times. I have a really relaxed brain what can I say.

Riding around on a butterfly while in a coma isn't proof of anything, IMHO. Just like dreams aren't really "real". I have to agree with Weltz on this one. Even by the fact that you remember the experience means that it was transcribed to your brain somehow. If the memories were accrued externally to your physical body, there would have to be some kind of 'mechanism' for reintegrating them. And although anything is possible, that seems highly contrived. God isn't a warm and fuzzy feeling, and the 'God helmet' theory seems as reasonable as any a way to describe many of these deep moments of euphoria. But I could be wrong. Truth is stranger than fiction, they say.

I don't know that i "believe" in out of body experiences as legitimate journeys to the spiritual realm or simply the brain in a dream state. I think that it could be a personal "glimpse" of the spiritual that is given to that particular individual for some reason for their life. But, it neither confirms or denies God or the spiritual realm.

Fiction is much stranger than truth(prove that Virgil).
God has already blessed all of us.
My take anyhow.

i would attribute most of those experiences as more like dreams...they seem so real, until you wake up...
when i was younger and kind of into martial arts study, i had a deviated septum corrected...i had read about a chinese method of healing by controlling the blood flow in your body to the injured area...i was able to achieve this and it was a pretty, shall i say freaky experience...i never tried it again

.....and what I think they feel like. Believing we have souls, I have come to think that they, from time to time, need an escape from our bodies. I think they escape not only when we are sleeping, but at times during the day. Mine seems to be escaping a lot lately. I was standing in our warm sunny window, looking out at our awesome cold, snow-covered mountain. Hanging over it was the most beautiful cloud formation, that I'd ever seen. The sun was peeking through the clouds and coloring the mountain with blue and magenta. Just then, I felt my soul slip away for about 30 seconds. It was heaven. Have you had experiences like this? Maybe you're driving along and realize you can't remember the last few minutes? Where did you go and how did it feel? Will looking at something beautiful while listening to the right kind of music do this to you? Do you believe, as I do, that your soul from time to time slips out the back door for a break? Lone, I believe what you experienced is more a state of No Mind, not an out of body experience. I have lots of times I can't remember the last few minutes. Have you studied any of the traditional forms of meditation? I find it very difficult to get to that state of thinking or being unaware of any thoughts but that is considered a very desireable state. I believe the soul is fully surrounding the body and attached though when this occurs.

My DH and GrS saw a dime appear and drop out of nowhere last night. I guess Pennies from Heaven are now dimes - due to inflation, I guess.
I've heard people talk of out-of-body experiences and read of different cases - I've never had one - but a close family member did have what might be classified as an out-of-body experience. I personally don't think they're just dreams, though.

I thought of that song, also, Pennies From Heaven.
The entire episode was so odd because both my DH and GrS were searching a couple of documents and were key boarding. They both said what was that at the same time.
The OBEs are just one-type of the unseen spirits moving about. --------- I have done dynamic meditation similar to what Ktunes describes. On the meta-physical level there is so much unknown to the majority of people. It is an interesting field of study.
I read a book about angels and their functions. I wish I had not passed that one on.
