It does show an average at the end of the workout, so that seems to be worth something. I check it constantly. I may "fact check" it at some point by trying to take my pulse manually while also seeing what the HRM says.

I did another test this morning. I warmed up at home with some quick stretching (hopefully to ameliorate the problem Archie pointed out about the cold), and then did a 2 mile walk. I did book it up a hill early on -- lets say a 20 second brisk run. I've heard that if you do your bursts earlier in the workout (vs. a big one at the end) that you increase your burn rate throughout the workout.
So a 45 minute workout, 529 calories. Average HR 134, max 171, 12:39 in the fat burning zone, 31:45 in the fitness zone.
I'm thinking I should apply a blanket multiplier of 0.5 for all calorie burns. I'm sincerely hoping the heart rate counts are more accurate!
At least for those of us with a data fetish, this can be kind of fun.

OK this one is a tad more realistic:
52 minutes -- 45 worth of elliptical, the rest was stretching and a round of curls. 812 calories 157 Average HR 173 Max 3:41 in fat burn 48:24 in the fitness zone.
What do you think?

I think that the "calories burned" count is too high, but that could be because mine are so much lower because of my weight so it just seems crazy to me. For some reason, the 500+ calories for 2 miles of walking is throwing me. I put my weight and time running into this calculator, and it gave me almost exactly the same numbers as my Garmin GPS/heart rate monitor - www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc. I put your numbers into it for the elliptical, and it seems about right.

Has anyone used a working Misfit Shine? Looks like an interesting concept, raised a lot of money, but I'm not sure they have delivered any yet.

Thats good. I'm less concerned about the small workouts. I figure the big ones are the ones that count.
What was interesting was that my heart rate was highest when I had the resistance the highest, but went at a slower pace. My heart rate was in the 170s when I had it on maximum and walked backwards, but 159-161 when I had it at medium and going 20 paces/minute faster.
I'll have to do more of the workout at the higher resistance so I can build that caboose that drives the ladies wild.
