Use witch hazel after shaving. It's a great astringent.

Here is a novel idea: Why not ask your DS if he would like to try blades or an electric? Well, gee, thanks! The "uh, how should I know" look is one I aim to get from him anytime I can! What's the point of having all these great guys (and gals) right at my fingertips if I can't use them when I need them?

Ok, the witch hazel, alcohol, aftershave... so this is really needed? I guess I never knew (I thought aftershave was just to smell good, but I guess astringent makes sense). Didn't even think of his barber--he's known me since I was his paperboy as a little kid, so that might work well. I really do appreciate all the input! So far no sensitive skin problems, but you never know once you start getting rough with the skin... And Yay, boskone, another PNWerner

apple,
My son (17) recommends a YT video to learn. He was not eager to go to a barber. He is currently using a manual razor (Gillette Fusion proglide),sensitive shave gel and aftershave.

If he's going to use a blade and cream, you might consider buying a styptic pencil too. They help stop the bleeding facial nicks. Better using a styptic pencil than walking around with small pieces of tissue paper stuck to his face.

I was just thinking, I really like shaving in the shower. You might want to get him a mirror for the shower so he can shave there. It is just so much nicer than shaving at a sink.

I also shave in the shower and I use a Gillette Fusion razor. As long as you clean the blades and dry them then they will in fact keep a sharp edge for at least a couple of months minimum. I spent $40 on 15 Fusion blades 4 months ago and I just put in the 2nd of the 15 last week.

OP, not the kind of help I thought you would be asking for.... <<disappointed, realizes fantasy will never come true >> <<also writes down names of all the so called "females" on this board that were quick to reply to "from the guys" post (methinks some posters have outed themselves as males impersonating females...) >>

I had no idea drying the blades made such a big difference. I'll have to start doing that.
So Apple, it seems the gillete fusion proglide is a popular razor. I'm sure others use differently but it's my favorite. The razors are expensive but I guess if you dry them out they last a long time.
I'm sure he'll cut himself until he gets used to it. It just happens. I agree with whoever said to try it out first on a Friday night or Saturday morning. I remember going to school looking like a vampire until I got the hang of it.

I'll definitely be taking the suggestions! I'm taking the day off on Thursday, I can go get supplies then (or Friday). Christmas vacation might be the perfect time for him to start practicing--lots of time to try to get the hang of it before he goes back to school. Of course, he might be proud to have all the little cuts since he may be one of the few freshmen who needs to start shaving
