redruby - I love the idea of $1 for the 1st week, $2, for the 2nd, etc. That sounds like fun. I will try it. Karma to you!

Redruby....sounds like fun! I needed to figure out the monthly amount and do it that way because I am only paid 1x per month. Doesn't work out too bad. Let me know if anyone wants it that way so they can join in. For Jan, you need to save $10. I think I will use that method to fund my Gifts account!

Okay, I think I'm ready to post some goals. I'm not going to track retirement here. We have some land that we eventually want to build on, so we'll be saving for that for a LOOOONG time. No car debt, but we're going to have to buy a new (to us) car in the next couple of years. Our EF and vehicle account already have funds in them, so I'm just going to track the contributions for this year. Accounts | 2013 Goals | Saved YTD | % Met | EF | $3,000 | $0.00 | 0% | Land | $5,000 | $0.00 | 0% | Vehicle | $2,000 | $0.00 | 0% | Total | $10,000 | $0.00 | 0% |
Please let me know if I've set anything up wrong!

I am doing the challenge in reverse also. I am keeping it in a jar in my closet and at the end of the year I am going to do something fabulously fun with it...like add it to my EF...or pay down a student loan.

Count me in on the $$ a week plan ~~ not counting it towards any goals but it'll be my 2013 NYE fun$. Been over on YM & felt good until I read how much they've saved. Background: left govt job in 2004 & had to pay 66k to convert pension plan. Probably should have stayed but I was burnt out. Had 83k in 457. That was it. Minimal employment since then (lousy market since 2008) but now have around 500k (inherited 200k) + house + pension. Guess I'm an under achiever. Even my sister said she was shocked at how little I have.

Ombud - Please fill in for the slow girl. YM is Your Money? And they tell each other how much they've saved total? And they rate you on how you are doing compared to others? On one hand I'd be interested to know, on the other hand if it tells me I'm way behind where they think I "should" be I'd just as soon tell them to sick it in their ear.
OK, I re-read your post for clarification. You're the one tagging yourself as an underachiever, not them, right? Well, I'm with Rocky. What you've got is what you've got. Have you done your own research to be able to honestly tell yourself that you are on a good track for a retirement savings? (By whatever yardstick you decide to use?) Then there you go. Please don't make yourself feel miserable getting caught up with trying to compare yourself with the Jones' in this world.

HappyCat - I might be wrong but I seem to recall you saying that you have temptation issues. If that is the case I'd like to suggest that you deposit your weekly "fun" money ASAP and not keep it in the closet where you can sneak little bits away or even just decide to blow it on a Want and not save it for a Need.
With that said, remember, I may be thinking of someone else who mentioned they have had a history of weak financial will power.

January/February savings will be pretty low as the catering season slows down these two months--thus, DH won't be working as much. A nice break for him. We also cash flowed a trip to spring training at the end of Feb., bought our DS a ticket to fly home for a visit since he couldn't be with us for Christmas, etc.. DD1 is graduating from her phys.therapy doctoral program in April so we will have to pay for that trip, as well as a party/open house in May to celebrate her graduation and her sister's from med school. Then off to Europe for us three gals!

Speaking of saving games, a few years back one of the money experts illustrated how starting with a penny could lead to wealth. She just said save a penny, then the next day double it, then double that etc. for a month. Doesn't take long to get up there. It was interesting to look at the chart. .01; .02; .04; .08; .16; .32; .64; 1.28; 2.56; 3.12; 6.24; 12.48; 24.96; 49.42; 99.84; 199.68, etc. You can see that by day 16, the challenge is up there!

Murphath - did this problem in math class (many decades ago). Teacher asked us would you rather have $100 a day or start with a penny and double your total each day. Everyone in class took the 100 per day. Turns out it was more than a million after 30 days. He then went on to explain compound interest. Pretty cool teacher. Karma to you for the memories.

I have created a detailed budget/plan through March 31 and IF I am diligent and persistent, I could reach my savings goals by March 31, 2013. This means debt free (except student loans *sigh*), all house projects completed or 100% funded AND my savings fully stocked. Of course it is a very meager goal of $3,500 but this means I will be able to continue to add to savings while focusing on SL repayment from April - December. This is only possible because I am still working for my old job. I left that job on Oct 8 and they just hired my replacement on Jan 7. I have been working extra hours to keep them going and I will be paid a lump sum pay for that on Feb 13. (less taxes of course..ugh). It won't be enough to retire but I will take it. I've also been asked to participate in another test scoring project in my area from March - May. It is super easy and I can work up to 20 hours per week (M -F 4 hours each day). I think I will sign on for 12 hours (M, W, F) and have that direct deposited into my savings for SL repay at the end of the year. I can do anything for 10 weeks and EVERY dollar counts!!

I will be so terribly slow on my updates...get paid on the 1st and 15th of the month and Jan is such an awesome month that I will go almost 3 weeks without a paycheck and I was under a little madness at the beginning of the year and spent like a moron so now I am sitting with $100 to my name til next Mon...luckily all I have to buy is a little food and gas ;D

Thanks Teachermom! TTTT, I feel like I'm cheating by starting out with money saved. I have always started at zero and only counted my contributions. Finishing off last year early and giving myself a head-start on this year's goals is the only reason I'm sitting at 46%. From here on I'm sure I'll progress at a far more reasonable rate.
When I do meet all these goals I'm considering to start saving in $12,000 chunks. I love teaching. I wouldn't want to do anything else. But, teaching where I am, a WA state public school, with who I am, a very pompous and controlling principal, makes me want to consider moving to/starting a smaller charter school. The downside will be that the pay will be far, far less. Thus, needing an extra $12K a year to supplement.
