Goals 2013 and beyond!!! I have thought about and reworked my goals over and over and over. I have some huge things I want to save for and realistically don't know how much or how long it will take for me to save for them....thus they have no deadline. So, what I decided to do was to just put everything on my spreadsheet starting with today's total. Some of them will be met this year and will change to something else for next year, some of them will need to be met each year and get "spent", others will take multiple years to save for before they will be spent. My goal for this year is to make all my yearlies and a minimum of 10% for all others! That would be $33,550, which will be a huge stretch!! So.....here it is! We're going to get a bernese mountain dog puppy about the 3rd week in January. (that's NOT the savings part) All-in-all I spent $29 and saved over $45... , which is nothing to sneeze at. Congratulations on both the savings and the Berner. You're right- the saving happen because both you and DH were on the "look out" for savings, even if it were unconsciously. I had a Berner several years back. What a big, sweet heart. Take lots of pictures; they're soooo cute!

Ombud.....exactly. Some are needs but others are things I want to get done to my house, be prepared when needed for the house and trips I want to take someday. Like I said, they have no exact deadline, so don't know how much I will put towards them each year to break down more. I need to save for the taxes, my trip in November 2013, Insurance (deductibles), car tires, car maintenance, gifts, and refill the minor EF. Would like to save for the Hardwood floors this year and misc. travel in case something comes up. Everything else will be minimum of 10%. We will see how well I do. I made a list of the most likely "extra" income amounts I will have and scheduled savings (retirement and taxes) and came up with $27,000, so I just need to figure out $6k more. Maybe I will get another part time job or take on some other extra work. I do plan on selling a bunch of stuff....garage sale, craigslist, Ebay, so that will help some. Gives me something to work for! Love a challenge!!

Teachermom - Holy smokes, sister, you've got your 5-year plan going on there, don't you? It's a lot like how I think except I don't put it all in one spreadsheet. I think it would seem too daunting to see it all in one place. I like to post my Plan in bite sized increments so I can feel pride in the accomplishments. I know it's just a collection of green and red pixels on a screen but earning roses is ridiculously motivating for me.

Been lurking. Thought this was a board for those people who had no debt. I have debt and it seemed silly to save, but I am seeing a different view now. I am going to start with an EF. I had one up until June last year but I never got around to refurnishing it. GOALS is $1,000 (1/1/2013)

Welcome Red Ruby! This is definitely not just a board for those with no debt. I believe everyone who posts regularly has some debt. We have realized, as you have figured out, that the key to not going back into debt is to have a savings plan including and EF. We are here to support you, whatever you goal is.
Mind telling us a little about you? Things like where you are from, what your plans are, your past savings successes, anything you want to share.

Updated my spreadsheet to add my change jar. My kids got me a large counting jar that will hold $1000 for xmas. Finally filled it up with all the change I had around. Adding that into my total! Please be understanding. ;D Hi Redruby. I'm glad to see that you have cleared up the misnomer that Savers are the opposite of Racers. For a bunch of us we're members of both boards. I think a balance between saving and debt repayment is the secret to not just getting out of debt, but staying out of debt. Like teachermom said, we'd like to get to know you a little bit so we can cheer you on in the good times and commiserate with you in the bad times.

So I am a mother of four. Oldest is in college, youngest is 2. I can save when I want something bad enough. My Ef is usually destroyed by my husbands Business. He drives a truck and needs his own repair EF but anytime he gets any money in it something happens and it is wiped out plus debt added. I am just trudging through for 17 more months when it will be paid off and he can save the money he spends on a payment for repairs. With this type of thing happening a Major EF is impossible right now because of Debt. So I had a minor EF several times and kept it up until June of 2012 but my snowball ended due to DH refinancing his pick up to pay for a truck repair. So I am going to try build it back up. We usually do not have this many repairs but it was a BAD year and I started the year off remodeling my kitchen. I have tried to talk him into selling the truck and driving for someone else but he doesn't want to do that. So I have to work with what I got.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONEI'm really glad 2013 is here. I think this is going to be a great year for me. I should be able to completely fund my emergency fund later this month with a business reimbursement check I was supposed to receive last year but they delayed until early this year. Since that money is already earmarked and will complete that savings goal from last year I am not including it here in my 2013 goals. In 2012 I only accomplished 61.4% of my goals so here's hoping for a more successful year (savings goal-wise). I'll be in again this year, but I don't have my finalized goals yet. My financial plans went into flux a couple weeks ago, but I think it's getting sorted out now. The good news is that my living situation will cost less this year than last year, so my savings goals should be able to be better! Yay!

Think it's done. Not as ambitious as TeacherMom but then this is as complete as I can get it. The $170 in Holidays comes from Thanks 4 Sharing & rebates that can be put on a Macy's gift card. Ok, tomorrow I'll try out the trial version and see what's there. I don't have any bills left to pay this month, but I will still go poke around and see what I can set up for next month. p8nt, Did you find out anything about YNAB? Any thoughts? oK, I honestly didn't look into it in detail. I went back and revisited my Mint.com account and my spreadsheets and I decided I was not willing to spend $60 for YNAB. I'm pretty good about knowing exactly what my bills will be and when they're due. My biggest challenge is keeping track of where I'm wasting money (Yes STARBUCKS... I'm looking at you!) and Mint will help me solve that problem. My other issue is tracking things for taxes, and I also think I can solve that problem with spreadsheets and Mint without buying the YNAB program. I can imagine for some people $60 is just a drop in the bucket and they're will to part with it, but for me - I just can't do it.

P8nt, that's why I use the one provided by USAA (my bank). Free is good. Doesn't your bank have one? I use as much free content as possible and put the savings towards goals. Pennies add up remarkably fast

Pennies add up remarkably fast My bank does have online bill pay, but I haven't really looked into it for other budgeting tools. I'll go check that out now. eta - Well, I checked and it doesn't appear there's any type of budgeting software with my Chase bank account. I do use online bill pay so that's helpful. Hopefully with that and Mint I'll be able to keep better track of my tax write offs this year.
