Great job Archie! I run in New Balances as well - love them!
Today I ran a 10k. Last year, it was the first race that I had ever done. I wanted to finish faster than treadmill pace (I run 12mm on the treadmill) and shocked myself with a 1:00:20. And I was mad that I was only 21 seconds away from under an hour!
So I signed up this year - I have been slacking since my marathon, doing 10-15 miles a week instead of more. Again, I shocked myself and ran a 56:31! I never imagined being that fast! I guess a whole year of training has paid off, even with my lower mileage lately (though I have been doing exercise DVDs three times/week as well).
I finished 4th in my age group though (last year I finished 3rd). I really wanted another runner bobblehead that they give out as the age group awards!

Yay Steph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't you love it when you get that kind of result, something that presents such a huge difference in time? I've got a 5K next Sunday that was so poorly attended last year, I got first place in my age group. Yup, it was that bad. This year, they moved the race from February to April and from a Saturday to a Sunday. I guess they think it will help, but the day before, there's another 5K that's hugely popular (they serve a Irish breakfast buffet at the end). So who knows....a thin crowd next Sunday might get me another medal.

Great job everyone! Keep the updates coming, I am running vicariously through you until mid-December, when I will hopefully get the go-ahead from my doctor after the baby comes!

Nancy - did your friend sign up for the January WDW half yet? Registration opened yesterday - the half is already 51% full. It probably won't fill up too much until closer to the price increase (June 18th I believe). Just thought I would put that out there. Ratchets - I would be so intimidated by someone who won Chicago (or any marathon for that matter)! Wow! That is so cool. Did 4 miles today, so I am at 13 so far for the week (6 Monday, 3 yesterday, 4 today). 2 miles by myself, then a coworker caught up to me and I ran the last 2 with him. Always nice to have someone to chat with. The weather is so nice here right now that you can't pass up the opportunity to go out over the lunch hour. Of course, running turns my face beet red for an hour afterwards, so I sort of look like a strange Oompa Loompa cousin right now.

I saw it today, steph. I don't have an issue with making the cut, but then I saw the requirement that half-marathoners need to submit a 10K or higher time. My friend has yet to even race a 5K! I will see him Saturday; I assume he has been sent the link to the site by the friend who talked him into the race. The problem here is that he is running out of long races very fast. At this stage, most of what will be left to run will be 5K, triathlons or the newest fad, mud runs/challenge events.
I found two 10Ks for him to do early next month, but in the meantime, the race may close before he gets a chance to run them.

Nancy - you can actually sign up for the race and then email your race result later on if he doesn't do a 10k until the fall. I think you have under November 1 or 30 to submit a time.
If you don't submit one, you are placed in the last corral so it isn't the end of the world. But the further up in corrals you get, the more space between you and the sweepers.

I don't think his place in the corral (or mine, for that matter) will be an issue. Heck, we'd both be at the end anyway. I have a qualifying time from late last December that I can use. But I will let him know. I am pushing him to get in at least a 5K in the next couple of weeks. He has no race experience, absolutely zero. He can run the required pace time, but he's never raced it, and of course, never raced anything of distance.

Did a 5K this morning. Broke my old PR by 21 seconds, and finished 3rd in the Grand Masters Division (larger group for runner 50 and over, so trophy instead of a medal!) so the training is definitely working! It was hot (80 degrees) and humid at the start, and worse at the end. Some shade on the course, but not enough. Fortunately, the race was staffed by local Army folks (it began and ended at the National Guard Armory) and those guys and gals went the extra mile to make sure the water stations did double duty.
Spoke with my friend yesterday. He knows he needs to apply for the race, and fortunately, he does not need a qualifying 10K time until November 1. We've got nothing left here as far as 10Ks go, but he can go elsewhere in the state. I still cannot convince him to do a 5K. He doesn't want to do a race until he can run it well. I think he's there, but he doesn't really believe himself enough yet.

<<Puts up a target of Mr. Bill in order to throw old running shoes at him>> Kidding. That's a really good amount of miles in that time frame. I've got two more 5K races before the running season ends here, and both are next month. There is a five-mile race that I am considering, but it's a bit of a trip (an hour south). I like the oddball mileage, though. We won't have much in the way of distance races until the late fall.

Mr. Bill, that is a nice pace!
Boston Marathon today. My friend is running today and then we are vacationing together tomorrow. I am sure she is going to be ready to break open a few bottles of vino.

Thanks for the reminder, Archie. I don't know anyone in the race this year, but I do follow it. My uncle competed in Boston twice back in his younger days. He is eighty years old, and still jogs, BTW.

My friend just finished in 3:17. Dang! I knew she was fast, but I didn't realize how fast she was.

I made 5.5 miles in 47 mins this AM, did a major hill too (of course I had momentum going down so that was easy, but going back up later was a beeeeech...it didn't help that I was overdressed too....the weather has changed with a quickness this week)
keep running folks!

I'm taking running gear to Canada; looks like good weather up there. I've been trying to map out a route to use while I'm there.

I did 5 miles in 50 minutes yesterday. I was doing the 4.09 miles for the Boston victims and kept on going. I need to sign up for some more races soon!
My DH says if he gets a new job closer to home that he is bidding on then I can run Disney again in January! So keep your fingers crossed that he gets the job because I want to go back to Disney so badly!

No run this morning, just 2,600 yards in the pool.
Normally, I would run tonight, but because of the early-morning flight tomorrow, I'll wait until I reach my destination. Running clothes are packed; it is a "short run" week for me, with nothing over 5 miles. Saturday the 27th is my next long run. I've done 8 miles, and will likely do that again that day. Two races in May, both 5Ks. Still thinking about a five mile race in mid-May, but have not signed up for it at this point.

Ratchets, that's awesome. You do have to run races in order to get the mindset, as I tell my friend. He's saying he's not ready to race yet, because he wants to finish well. I think he just needs to go do it and get it over with, but I cannot push him; he has to be ready.

I ran my first 10k on Sunday and finished in 01:07:58; I already set the goal of 59:59 for next year's race! I'm not a fast runner by any means, more of a jogger, but I set a loose goal of an hour and 10 and I beat it. So setting low goals is a good strategy. I signed up for this race is January when I was in the midst of my winter laziness, so I consider this a good first race considering the conditions. It was the Hershey 10k; that park is $%$@ hilly! I don't have a marathon goal, but I want to eventually do the Broad Street run and then a half marathon.

I'm running while on vacation, but it's not easy. It's cold and hilly and there's traffic. bur I am getting in a couple of miles each day, in addition to walking everywhere.

I have a half marathon this weekend. I am hoping I can use it to make me feel better about my marathon goals. In the past couple of weeks I haven't felt great about my training or how I may fair at the marathon. If I can get a good half marathon in, I think it will help my psyche. My goal for the half is 1:45:00, but I will be happy with anything around 1:47:00 or under.

OK, all that concrete surface running finally caught up with me. I am pooped. Planning to just swim tomorrow, and do a long run either Sunday or Monday. I have a 5K next week.

What a beautiful morning for a race! Unfortunately I did not get to participate.
The race was a 40 minute drive from our house. It started at 9:30 and we left at 8:00, so we were already cutting it close. As we were pulling into the parking lot I am mental going through what I need to do to get ready and I realize that I forgot my shoes. I am wearing flip flops. shit . I figured I had three options. 1. go home 2. run barefoot 3. maybe a vendor was there selling shoes.
So I take off my flip flops and jog the 1/4 mile through the parking lot to registration and cross off running barefoot as an option. I sign in and look through the vendors. One has shoes on display, but the are not selling. No one is selling. I cross of buying shoes as an option.
As I look around at all of the runners, I can just imagine how many extra, old or otherwise unused running shoes are probably in people's bags or cars. If only I knew someone my size or had the gumption and time to start asking every runner if they had extra shoes I could wear.
So I meet back up with my wife who starts yelling at me and telling me that I ruined the day and is never going to come watch another one of my races ever again. What a shitty race day.

Aw, archie...... . I'm also trying not to laugh. How do you forget your running shoes for a race? But then again, I wear mine to the race, rather than try to remember to pack them. I have enough other crap to remember (change of clothes, glasses, sunblock, beverages, cooler, ice, purse, cellphone, race bib). Oh, and I never, ever bring DH to an event. Then again, he never offers to attend. Probably just as well. But you learn from these things. Guaranteed, you will never ever forget your shoes again. Believe me, you will sleep with your shoes on next time.
