My DH always b!tches at me that I want to do destination races (Disney, etc.). He's like "Why can't you just run races around home?" Uh, because a vacation before/after a race is way better than doing a race and coming home and cleaning. Ha! I would veto a tri or race that requires a hotel stay but is in a not fun location (i.e., Harrisburg, PA) but I would be cool with one that is worth the travel. I would love to run the International Boulevard 10k in Aruba. There is also a half marathon and Olympic triathlon. Really, I just want to be back in Aruba.

I cannot do it this year, but I would like to do the October 'Round the Sound Swim in Bermuda. I priced airline tickets there, and holy sticker shock, Batman!!!!!!!!! The hotel prices weren't bad (there was a package deal for swimmers) but the plane tickets were just killer. I spent less to go to Toronto. And it took a heckuva lot less time!

OK, so this weekend, I mapped out eight weeks of workouts to better prepare for the next triathlon. And with everything in writing, it makes it harder to ignore getting up in the morning and doing the workouts. Damn, workouts get old. And they get really old when you get older.

Another item off the bucket list. First ocean mile swim done. Good conditions and Jaws stayed in North Carolina. No official times posted yet. No real clue how I did, since I don't wear a watch when I swim. I'm guessing about 45 minutes or so.

I just signed up for a marathon . My running has been going better the last couple of weeks, and I'm a long long way from 26 miles, but the race isn't until January so hopefully more than enough time to train up to that distance. Is it the disney marathon?

Also I highly recommend Hal Higdon's novice 2 plan!

Uh, because a vacation before/after a race is way better than doing a race and coming home and cleaning. I really liked the amount of races in the UK, there was always one going on within an hours drive like every weekend through the summer, or sometimes more than one. So you could pick one with scenery you like - I much prefer trails or at least a rural area to running through a city.
The Disney one you did looked like a lot of fun, that would be a nice one to do with my wife sometime and not be competitive about it but just enjoy the atmosphere.
A friend of mine did the January Disney half marathon...really loved it, but dayum, it's like 20,000 people or something like that. It takes over an hour just to get everyone out of the chutes.

It can't be that long for 20,000! Broad Street has 40,000 and my corral started about 40 minutes after the first one began. There is something fun about running with a shit ton of people!

Heck, I can drive to it, and it's STILL too expensive! I can do three other races (at least!) for the price of a Disney!
But for people with kids, or those looking for a destination race, I do get it.

It might be expensive, but it is still the most fun I have ever had during a race. The entertainment was great.
I'd gladly pay those prices for fun runs. I don't know, I'm getting burnt out on races in my little town with few spectators and no excitement. Oh look, a tree. Oh look, another tree. Haha.
At this point in my running life, I'd rather pay $125 for an entertaining race than $25 for five boring races.

Is it only $125, Steph? I thought it was like $300...well, I say only but $125 is still pricey in my opinion. With that said, I bought a year pass for the rock and roll marathons and have done one, and that one I ran with my wife so kind of walked/ran it. So that wasn't the best financial decision ever made!
I think I paid around $150 for the full marathon - can't remember though. Here are the prices for the Princess races in February: -Half Marathon - $175 -10k - $110 -5k - $65 Of course they keep going up every year, but people pay them! I like trees too, but we have one trail around here (it is like 30 miles long) but a lot of races take place at some point on that trail, so it gets old after a while!

Do you get a break if you register early for the Disney events? Like if you register before a certain date, there's a price break? Some races do that, but the premier ones often don't, because people will be flocking to do them anyway. And let's face it...where else can you race in nice weather - in February?

Those are the initial prices - they go up after a month or two and then go up again a month or two after that (but they usually fill before the price increase).

Results from the ocean mile Saturday finally got posted. One and a half minutes faster than my mile swim in April. Not bad. Not a great time (I was not last in my age group, but pretty close to it), but it was faster than what I did exactly three months ago, and this one was under tougher circumstances (the first one was a closed course, no current or waves to worry about). ETA: fixed my time. I wish it had been three minutes faster! Lousy math.

My half is this weekend. And for the first time in like a year, summer has decided to come to Chicago. It's forecast to be a low of 68, high of 85 and HUMID. Stupid weather. I was with family out of state all weekend and got back this morning. I decided to run this afternoon b/c I took all weekend off and while I need to take it easy this week, I also need to get a couple 4 milers in (today and Wednesday or Thursday). I seriously was huffing and puffing like a novice. It was 88 and humid this afternoon. I got 4.3 miles and was done. Let's hope at 6:30am Sunday when the race starts its NOT this bad or I won't make it! Why, summer?! Why couldn't you have waited ONE.MORE.DAY to arrive in Chicago? Everyone would have been fine if you waiting till next Monday!

Wishing the best for you, flamingo. Drink extra water all week, eat water-based fruits and get extra sleep, if possible.

Good luck, flamingo! Just hydrate and listen to your body. I got the same stupid luck. The weather was great until the week before my half. Of course, the weekend after we got a little reprieve from the humidity and two weeks after (the week of hubs' duathlon) it was cool and rainy in the morning. I would have loved that! I'm actually looking forward to the Philly Half in November because it will be about 40 degrees.

But the Pope's visit changed our plans. Well, not him; he's fine. It's those 2 million or so friends he's bringing along that's a problem. We're heading towards Lancaster County instead.

Good idea! Bummer that he's ruining your plans, but that weekend is going to be nuts. I'm planning on leaving work early that Friday and I'm hoping my Monday morning commute will be fine. We're just going to hole up at home! Lancaster is nice! Make sure to visit Intercourse! ;-)

Just got word today (on the eve of a big swim meet) that I made All-American Top Ten Time for Masters Swimming in the 800 short course freestyle relay I did back in March. Now there's an accolade I never thought I'd get.
I'd like to get an individual Top Ten, though.

Thanks. Gets me an invite to the regional banquet next year and some kind of recognition goodies. But of course, I want a solo Top Ten now. I'm a greedy little bugger, yanno.

Well, I did it. It was slow and ugly but it's done. 2:08--but I finished! The humidity was a killer and at 6:30 in the morning it was 78 degrees. Then the last 3 miles were in the direct sun. They were running out of water and couldn't keep up with demand. Good thing I was over trained! People were flagging by mile 4/5. So now I'm going to sign up for one in October and hope the weather is cooler!! Aright, time to prepare for next weeks 10k! Good thing I'm doing it at my DH's pace-which will be slower than my pace today
