Our gym has a no cell phone use in gym. Even though its louder than hell and everyone is on their iPod, I'm okay with that. DD called and I left the gym area and went outside the door for the call. A lady, for want of a better word, came outside to tell me that I could only use my cell phone in the ladies locker room. Now she had to make a special trip out to tell me that rule when I wasn't disturbing her or anyone else. WTF? I wanted to tell her to go F herself but I restrained myself. I mean, seriously? No one was around and she had to leave her workout to come and bitch at me?

The gym has rules on what people can do outside? They must really be powerful.

Was this another patron of the gym or someone in charge?

Mine says in the lobby area only. I've seen people on their phones in the locker room.
That being said, I've been besides girls who answer a call and keep trotting along on the treadmill.

With most phones having cameras I am surprised that they would allow phones in the locker room.

This sounds like it falls into the category "No good deed goes unpunished." Try to be helpful and someone tells you to f-off. Nice.

I guess I read it that maybe zib didn't know that altough cell phones are not allowed in the gym, they are allowed in the locker room. And instead of zib having to stand around outside in the cold, she was welcome to come inside and stay warm in the locker room.
But maybe I read that wrong.

Some people seriously have too much time on their hands.

Most gyms here do not allow phones indoors exactly because of cameras. And I would have told her what boat to get on- the slow sinking one to China.

I must have read it incorrectly. I read it to say that she went outside the gym doors - not outside the building.

Well - she used the word "outside." And in my state, just about all gyms have exterior exits - so I may have jumped to conclusions. But, I keep re-reading it, and I can only see that this lady may have been trying to be helpful and generous, not mean spirited. I think it sounds like zib was the cranky pants in this situation.

It has been so long since I have been to a gym, cell phones weren't an issue.

There's a lobby area outside the doors. There's not even posted signs just some "unwritten" rule. I, in no way, was bothering anyone. She was someone I'd never seen before and I'm there most mornings. Must have been cranky because she was working out. I always think she must be a friend of his ex, same look.

I left the area and went into the locker room. It was actually nicer. Warm with a chair.

No kidding. It startled me that people at the grocery store and the mall were just being rude and mean. I thanked a store employee for her help and I thought she would stroke out on me. That's really sad. Retail is an awful job to work at, almost as bad a serving, and to treat people mean is just mean.

My company specializes in the fitness industry. Cell phones are a major problem. While it seems this person is just a nuisance, it really is best to keep your phone in your car while you work out.

Why are cell phones a problem ? They are just part of life. I don't know. A gym that is too controlling is not overly appealing either. I guess there is a balance. The local Y doesn't want you to "leave" your cards. Well this is tiny town and i don't know if i will have the kids or DH so it is far simpler to leave them down there. So, we just conventiently "forget" them otherwise we would lose them.

Everyone is attached to their iPod or the gym equipment. Even if I had had a conversation, which I did not, no one would have heard me. She's just being a bitch and if I ever see her again, ill call management since she has been barred from being there.

Why are cell phones a problem ? same reason they are a problem with drivers - distractions. I've seen people lose their footing and go flying off a treadmill when they *are* paying attention. I'd say it's as much a liability for the gym as it is making sure other gym-goers aren't annoyed by it.

My major issue with cell phones in the gym is cameras. I also agree it is a distraction for some gym goers.
but it should be handled by trainers/ managers- not other gym goers.
Local gyms have had problems with pervs with camera phones.

I work in insurance specializing in Fitness. People fly off of treadmills talking of writing emails. Take photos of nude gym goers in the locker room. Talk loudly and distract another member who drops a weight. The list goes on and on. You wouldn't imagine the claims that I see. A gym that doesn't have proper controls banning phones except in specific areas doesn't care about the liability or risk for you or themselves. Bad Managment.
Yes, technology is in our lives but as with all things, there is an appropriate time and place. You're not there to catch up on calls, emails and Facebook. Workout and go home to do that.

Keeping your phone in your car is never a good idea. Lock it in your locker in your purse/gym bag or if you have to keep it on you- excuse yourself to the appropriate area when taking a call. The gym I favor has a lounge area in the front where you are permitted to use your phone.
Our local police will write you a ticket if your phone or purse is seen in your car in plain sight. And even though our ladies would not do that if they don't have to- you would be surprised how many do.

Who said anything about leave it in your car in plain sight? Common sense applies here people.
Put it in the glove box or console. Your car is safer than the gym locker, frankly.

ins- Not trying to start an argument- but most of my pickup trucks didn't have consoles. And by the time you put your registration, insurance and the book for the truck in glovebox- forget putting anything els ein there. Not everyone drives a car with a trunk and a console.

Eh, i dunno. Technology is what it is. You can let that stuff bother you or not. How does it affect you? How does seeing a dinner guest, at my party, with her nose in a phone, caring more about people she can't see than the ones she can, affect me? It makes me mad. I expect her/him to be interacting with me and my guests. Yes. But, there are always going to be people doing things we don't approve of. And, are you then the "gracious host" to reprimand them or not? As for the gym, other gym goers can mind their own business or they can go complain to management and management can then decide to intervene or not. As for rules, of course every place needs rules. But, it isn't the job of some nebnose to be a nebnose either.
