I drink Diet Coke... have for the last 20 + years. I'm a walking science experiment for the artifical sweetner in it. When people get on the 'drink more water' band wagon - I say I drink plenty of water! I have a couple cups of coffee flavored water every morning (I drink it black no sweetner/no cream). I also drink alot of Diet Coke flavored water. Sometimes diet root beer flavored water. I occassionally have wine flavored water. I like alot of frozen water in my Diet Coke as well. Actually, you're not drinking a lot of water. The caffeine in Coke is a diuretic. You're losing water. I don't seem to be in danger of dissecation, and I haven't had a 'glass of water' in... gosh, maybe months? can't remember the last time I had plain water. :0 Although, I did have dry cracked 'winter' skin on my hands - until I started using Bag Balm occassionally during the week.

You mentioned going grain-free. I did that earlier this year and have felt much better (I'm still waiting to try to get in to see a doctor about being tested for a wheat allergy or gluten-sensitivity). I recommend looking up 'paleo' and 'primal' foods for lots of ideas. Mark's Daily Apple is a good place to start, Nourishing Traditions is also good I've heard, and Whole9.

Thanks, labcat! Paleo looks more in line with what we were going for. My eMeals let me switch over to that so at least I will get some great, quick recipe ideas.

I don't "do" diets, I am a big believer in eating everything, but in moderation and know what you are eating. I don't get it how you can completely eliminate a whole food group for the rest of your life. That being said, I just read a book Wheat Belly and it's truly scary what we are eating under the label of "wheat"

Alternate opinion on paleo diet fitbie.msn.com/eat-right/tips/diet-trends-2012/tip/7"A diet based in fruits and veggies is great, as is shunning refined sugars and preservatives. But to be sustainable, diet plans need to meet all of the body’s nutritional needs, Giancoli says. Whenever it requires cutting out healthy foods (like whole grains, dairy, legumes), it doesn’t. "

" All 'diets' (used as food you eat not weight loss plan) can be modified to suit the individual. There are plenty of people who eat paleo who add back in foods that don't cause them distress. They can tell me grains are healthy all day long but I get horrible stomach cramps if I eat anything containing wheat. I will eat rice at a restaurant and I tolerate dairy products so I may follow a paleo recipe but put cheese on something. I recommend trying something the way it's designed and then modify it to suit you (unless doing so would negate the purpose of the diet).

LOL - I would like a low sugar and low fat diet that still includes massive amounts of brownies.
Did you ever see the TV show Coupling on BBC? Your post reminds me of when Jane said that she was a vegetarian that ate meat. She believed vegetarianism was about inclusion, not exclusion - so she could eat all the meat she wanted and still be a vegetarian.
I agree that you can modify diets to suit your needs, but if you start paleo and add in rice and dairy, I wouldn't go around telling people you eat a paleo diet - because you don't.

Well, I can't do dairy or many grains, so it seems to be a good fit. I like to use diets like that as a guideline. But I've never really stuck to any kind of fad diet either. I like learning about how certain foods interact and how to make sure to get the proper nutrients from a meal. But having the guideline gives me ideas about specific recipes. I detest cooking as it is - no way in heck am I going to get creative and come up with my own meals. I like eMeals because they do the planning for me. I just take the list and go shopping - 30 minutes later I have all we need for the week and I avoid wasting food.

You have to listen to your body. Mine doesn't like lots of things. It does like rice and potatoes though, and is not fond of eggs, so not Paleo per say... But I have gfree, Paleo, raw vegan, etc cookbooks...I find some things that work for me in all of them...

I do buy paleo cookbooks and find recipes that are based on it but I also will not refuse to eat something just because someone threw cheese or peanuts or rice with it. I think my main point is that just because a major food group is gone it does not necessarily mean that the person is following an unhealthy diet.

Do you exercise? I couldn't imagine coming back from a run and downing a soda. I don't think it would quench my thirst in the least. Exercise? You mean like put on special clothes/shoes, move around alot while getting sweaty and out of breath? No. I don't do that. I do log between 4 and 6 walking miles a day (M-F) and usually try to get in 15 or so flights of stairs (M-F) just as part of my daily routine. The weekends are alittle more variable - usually only 2 -3 miles of walking and then whatever house chores I do... I generally do 1 or 2 miles walks (getting from home to train to work, or a 35 minute lunch walk, or the 2 mile 'walk to the park and back' I do in my neighborhood in the evening). There's also the liquid that comes in 'food'. I've found the farm box veggies have alot more moisture in them than storebought veggies. I don't seem to be dehydrated so I guess I'm ok.

Some one, the OP maybe?, mentioned quickly cooking potatoes - I do them in the microwave. I wash the taters off, poke a couple holes in each one, make sure they are very wet (or add a tablespoon or two of water) put them in a microwave wave safe covered dish and Nuke 'em till you can stick a fork in 'em. I'm single - so I'll do 4 -5 medium red potatoes. They cook perfectly in about 4 minutes in my $30.00 low end microwave. I think the trick is the container you nuke them in - I use tupperware that's specifically made for the microwave with a vent in the cover. I've also found my 70's era Spice of Life covered corningware works well in the microwave - but I have to add 2 minutes to the cook time and the corningware is REALLY hot when it comes out. the special tupperware has 'cool handles' or something like that.
Don't forget the yumminess that is Sweet Potatoes! They also microwave well.
