In my area consignment shops are outrageously expensive. I'm not going to spend $8-10 on a used shirt when I can buy a new one cheaper on sale at Gymboree. The only upside has been that I've sold some of DS' clothes for more than I paid. What I've been able to sell has gone down dramatically. DS is rough on his clothes. I've had the best luck at the big consignment sales - the ones that take over civic centers or convention halls. Some of my friends enjoy buying large lots off of craigslist. January and June are my shopping times. They usually have enormous markdowns and you can get cute things for cheap, like Janie & Jack sweaters for $8 when they are usually $40.

I don't understand the emphasis on a new mattress. They are covered in plastic - what germs could possibly be on one once you use a sanitizing wipe on them? Not to mention, mattress pads are waterproof so nothing is getting on them anyway - at least the ones I saw are.

Our crib mattress isn't covered in plastic--it is just like the mattress on our bed. As a kid I saw some horrible documentary about places selling used mattress' and they would literally just re-cover mattress' they had found at dumps with new material so they looked nice, but they were coated in urine and god knows what else. Pretty much scarred me for life, although if I know the person it's coming from I'd be okay with a used mattress.
Plus, now with the potential for bed bugs I am more critical of used upholstered furniture and definitely mattress'.

Just because it is covered in plastic doesn't mean you can't bring bed bugs into the house along with it. I'd rather buy a new one. I would have considered a used one if I could have gotten it from a relative or friend that I know the conditions the mattress lived under. Everyone else's kids are out of cribs so that was not an option. I refuse to buy used off of Craiglist or a thrift store. The mattress cost us less than a $100 so I really don't see the big deal. And that was for a fancy pants all natural/organic Serta. The kid sleeps on a better mattress than I do.

My sister tossed out her mattress because it was covered in dust. But the crib was wood, so we could just clean it and it was fine. I bought a new mattress.

At least your kid sleeps on it. The crib, mattress, and pretty much every other piece of infant/toddler bedding was a complete and utter waste for us.

My daughter didn't use her crib until she was 3 months old.

Six months here. I wanted to move her out of the PnP sooner but DH was really paranoid about SIDS. We moved her when she kept getting stuck in the corner of the bassinet insert every time she rolled over.
We've decided we're going to convert the crib into a daybed for the time being rather than purchase a new big kid bed. So we're getting our money's worth out of that mattress.

According to cartoons aren't we supposed to put them in dresser drawers?

My friend has one of those dream newborns that only wants to sleep in the crib, isn't hungry all the time, and is easy to soothe. Sometimes I want to kick her.

I think the Moses baskets are cute. A step up from having the kid sleep in a drawer, which would be my Plan B It could be because neither of my siblings had a crib/changing table - my brother slept in a Pack & Play, my sister co-slept until she was old enough to sleep in a real bed - but I'd be reluctant to shell out for much furniture until I figured out whether the baby needed it or not. But this makes DH think I am going to be "one of those parents who only lets their kids play with plain wooden blocks and pieces of string." ;D

We borrowed a bassinet for #3. There's now way we could have kept her in there until 6 moths. She was crawling at 4 and sitting up (unassisted) by 5.5 months. We're betting she'll be walking by 9 months. Course, if you have more than one, shelling out for furniture isn't so bad, either. We are "one of those" parents. Our kids don't get a lot of toys every year (they get under 10 new toys a year), and we do tend to stick with non-battery operated toys. It still looks like ToysRUs threw up in their rooms most of the time.

Besides car seats, bottles, pacifiers, mattresses, probably anything is fine used. I'm admittedly very picky. I will only take used things if I know where it came from. Our crib mattress is used, but it was used by my nephew. I would never take something like that from a stranger. My friend and I just did a clothes swap a couple of weeks ago. She has a son who is my daughter's age and it having a girl while I have an infant son. She took a lot of my old infant girl's clothes and I took a lot of her boy clothes.
