If you are sick, please keep your ass at home because you are not doing the rest of us any favors.
My boss kept on coming to work with a flu and pass it around to all of us; I had to send my grocery manager home a Saturday before thanksgiving because he was about to pass out, one evening guy called out because he has it and I am trying to bust my ass with my head pounding, can hardly breath and throat hurting.
All he can say is: sorry! How about keeping your ass home next time you are sick.
*Sorry just in a really bad mood right now; I hate being sick and totally miserable when I am. And I couldn't pick a worse week to be sick.

You have my sympathies, Carl. My office manager came to work two weeks ago, coughing and hacking like she had a huge hairball stuck in her maw. She was sick, all right. But she thought she was too valuable to stay home. Seriously, beyotch? Either you go or I do. I've got place to go and things to do that I've paid for, and you are not going to ruin them.
She sulked out of the office after I stood up to her.

But, Carl, you are at work, passing the flu further around.
I do understand that somebody has to work at your store, and you are apparently the last one standing.. But one of the things companies value most is attendance. Retail employees get points against their record if they call out sick . . . even if they are sick.

I know what you mean, but some places expect you to work sick.
When I worked at the campus dining halls in college. I called out sick one day and they threatened to fire me if I call out again. I guess having someone sick working with food is better than than someone calling out.

My boss like me is exempt so him staying home because he is sick was not going to affect him pay wise. Instead 5 of us are now sick, my grocery manager and another clerk had to be out today.
Also you have allowable absences for a reason, so unless you are someone that get sick easily, your allowable absences will be more than enough.
And HELL NO! No one that works in my perishable departments is allowed to work when they are sick. I already sen two people home last week; one was insane enough to think she could make sandwiches with a cough. Are you nuts?

Do your non-exempt employees get paid if they call in sick? That could make a difference.
When I worked at Macy's, I got 3 "personal" days a year to use for stuff like sickness. But you got points against you if these weren't scheduled in advance. So they really weren't for colds, etc. even if those colds were accompanied by coughs, sore throats, etc. They were for hospitalizations, etc.
Have you always been a manager in your store, Carl, or have you been a non-exempt employee as well? It might change your perspective.
Meanwhile, your boss was there for the same reason that you are there SICK. He had work to do.

I was just going to say the same thing...that Carl is infecting everyone else! I have deadlines...I am the sole person that works on my company, other than the person to whom I report and he doesn't even have the software we use to upload the financials. If have come to work with 102 fever because I had a reporting deadline and I can't miss it without repurcusions from our parent company. I dont LIKE going to work sick...I would much rather be at home, under the covers. But sometimes we don't have a choice. I am salaried and get unlimited sick days...I took 1 sick day in 2012 and that was when I was throwing up...luckily it wasn't on a reporting day or I dont' know what I would have done.

I don't like to go to work sick, but I do. Since most of the stuff that I do runs over multiple days, if I don't show up, that means thousands of $$ in supplies and irreplaceable samples are trashed.
What I try to do is go in as early as possible (before too many people are there), get done what absolutely needs to get done, then leave as people start arriving.
I figure this is a decent compromise.

I'd like to add...if you're kids are sick, don't be sending them to school because YOU don't want to take off to care for them. It's not fair to the rest of us. Unless you don't have a choice. My sister gets sick days for her (has to prove with a Dr note), but has to use vacation if its for the kids. She ran out of vacation in September only taking days for her kids. So she would get fired if she called in without any PTO to use. Then again, she is a shitty mom for working outside the home and letting strangers raise & educate her children, so....

All good options, if you have them. Sometimes she can get my brother to watch them if he's out of classes. And sometimes her DH can get off work (but not usually).
Sorry for being snarky. Apparently I need a time-out now. Good night...

I hate people who do this.DF has a compromised immune system. His secretary came to work sick, gave it to him, who gave it to me. IRL there are sick people who feel they must go out and spread their germs because the world can't go on without them. I get it. But stay away from people!

So you are bitching about people coming to work sick, while you are working sick? Pot meet kettle.
I will go to work sick. Yeah, I have sick days but I have to save them to take off when my kids are sick. I can't afford to waste them on myself if I am able to work.

I go to work sick. I have been told that the cough I have now could take six weeks to resolve. The world does not revolve around me, but I'm pretty sure my team would be up shit creek if I took six weeks off for a cough.
I prefer to stay home!

Yeah, I have sick days but I have to save them to take off when my kids are sick. I can't afford to waste them on myself if I am able to work. Yes because the reason I am at work sick right before thanksgiving: - boss is finally out because he is too sick to work - grocery manager is out because he is sick - 2 clerks are out because they are sick. If he had stayed home we would be down 1 guy not 4 , and one of the 3 of us need to be there during the day... The other two are out leaving me. The week before last I worked 7 days, this week I worked 6; so hell yeah I am pissed that he came to work sick an everyone else is dropping like flies right before a major holiday.

Both of my kids worked at Walmart for a while and both of them got shit from their boss for calling in sick. One had swine flu (doc note and everything didn't matter) and I forget what the other one had but they both got in trouble.
A place I worked years ago would get mad if you called in sick even though we were working with elderly people. They told us we could just wear a mask. Sorry but I'm not walking around with a mask on my face all day hacking and trying to breathe because they never had enough staff.

I have some empathy for hourly workers for whom missing a day of work means losing 1/4 their paycheck or being written up (DH's last employer didn't give sick days - just "points". More than 2 days out without a related hospitalization, you were unemployed).
Going to work sick isn't ideal, and should be avoided whenever possible - but sometimes it just isn't possible.

I think employers would be more understanding if they didn't have to deal with so many workers faking illness in order to take the day off. It's not fair to those who are really sick. That's not the sick employees problem. Take it up with the fakers...when you show up with a doctors note and they still give you a hard time, then expect people to show up when they are sick especially when it means the unemployment line is the alternative.

I don't really see an issue with "faking" illness unless you're using up more than your allotted sick days or routinely missing days in which your presence is important.

I agree which is why I like "personal days" vs sick or vacation days...but when you work someplace which is chronically understaffed which was the case in my kids jobs and my many years ago job, it creates all sorts of problems for everyone involved regardless of what you call them.

There are jobs where you simply are not allowed to be sick. You will lose your job.
I'm curious, Carl, as to your company's policy on call-outs. Are they on a points system for hourly employees?
I know you are complaining about a boss who really caused the problem, but how do you feel about the sick cashiers calling out at the last minute? Is it ok as long as they have the time to cover it? Or do you guys take names, as they say in elementary school?

I'm not a big fan of the doctor's note requirement, either... We have a CDHP (so we pay out of pocket for almost everything until we hit our $5K deductible). The only two times I've called in sick are when I've had a cold. In both cases, there was absolutely nothing a doctor could do for me and it would've cost close to $150 for the visit.
I have no problem with requiring a doctor's note if you're out for X or more days, but as far as staying in a day to rest from a short illness, it seems unnecessary. I know some workplaces that require a doctor's note for ANY absence... seems like overkill.

Anything less than 2 hours goes against them.

At the first CPA firm where I worked, I was told at the interview, that during tax season, you came to work unless you were dead. Nobody called in sick the entire season. This was a very small firm: owner, 4 preparers and a administrative assistant. Boss and preparers had our own offices with doors and if we were sick, we closed ourselves in. What I didn't like is that two of the employees would bring their sick kids to work with them.
Had we called in sick, we wouldn't have gotten paid. Not getting paid is incentive to go to work sick if at all possible.

I found it extremely ironic that at my last place of employment (a major hospital) they would do the usual "flu prevention guidelines" every year and post them all over for patients. One included staying home when you're sick. . But this same hospital had a very strict attendance policy including a points system.
