I really wish they would make the drive. I would just go crazy inline for hours just for gas. I see it on TV all the time. Hey I think we have snow tomorrow not cool. As we lost power once, I don't have much confidence in the electric company for the new storm.

Hi, I have a few things to share. I just bought 8 bottles of jergens lotion. I got the 10floz sizes for $1 ish which is a good deal for me. DH likes Keri and is not sure he wants to use the jergens. So how long do think it will last? I hope he will use it too but if not it will take me a long time to go through. My Downey has gone lumpy! I have had it 2 years maybe but not only that but also my tide is lumpy. I have added water and I have so much I am wondering how long its all good for. Anyway, I have shaken up the bottles and hope for the best. My stores have been a lot less friendly over the pat year. I toped up my stockpile with some things over the last month or so, but I find I have to force the point to get what I want at times. And I will do that if I have to, but it was much nicer in the old coupon days of cashiers being in awe of savings. Now I feel we are seen as a PITA. hopetoberich: My experience with lotion has been that the cheaper the brand, the quicker it turns to being "watery". The expensive brands like Keri, Eucerin, and Aveeno have a very long shelf life. I can't say about Jergens as I haven't had any in years. I just bought the Suave and I can tell that its shelf-life will be short. As for your Tide and Downy - I can't imagine why the Tide would be lumpy. Is it a "special" Tide with something added? Soap should not do that. The Downy might be a different story as it is not soap. In any case, the Tide lumps will certainly dissolve; you might have to dilute the lumps in the Downy when you put it in the dispenser, but it still ought to be effective....it will just take an extra step to use it. I wonder what makes it do that. Temperature changes? I wonder how many other people have had that problem. Things have definitely changed in the couponing world and they will NEVER be the same. Using the sales cycles in conjunction with coupons to buy enough to last until the next sales cycle was the one thing that the little guy could do to help stretch a dime. As restrictions on coupons increase, the possibility of doing a Buy $X/Get $X EBs deal buying the same product (stockpiling) is going to decrease (it already is). It will also make it more difficult to use multiple coupons to purchase like products to earn a CAT at the grocery store. In addition, the sponsorship of the EB deals at CVS is shared by both the manufacturers and CVS. It seems that the manufacturers are paying more attention to the EB deals that they are sponsoring and what coupons they have out there that allow the consumer to double dip. Lumene blew it with their pdf, but quickly realized what they had done. They won't make the same mistake again and neither will a lot of other manufacturers. Another example is the $3/2 Aveeno coupon that came out right before the Aveeno deal at CVS and limits use to ONE PER PERSON!! I did not expect the drug chain rewards to last forever. As a matter of fact, I thought they'd be long gone by now; but I NEVER thought I'd see the day when I would be restricted to using one or two or even four like coupons at a time. When I have to make a choice, I am focusing on what I NEED or want to add to my stockpiles first and on MMs for other products second.

There no gas shortage in SE PA. I wonder why all the folks in NJ are in line for hours when they can drive over to PA? Makes no sense to me. Just guessing, but a lot of people still don't have power, so they have no way of knowing where there is gas and where there isn't. It seems like its easing up now, but last week when I needed gas and all the stations in town were totally out, I didn't really want to drive very far (using up more gas) to possibly only find more closed stations. I got a tip from my neighbor about an open station 20 minutes away and drove out there right away. It really was pretty scary. I've never gone through a gas crisis like this before and I've just never thought about NOT being able to get gas if I need it. I filled up before the hurricane hit, but that only goes so far.

I can't even imagine.

I'm praying for everyone on the east coast.
MM Meijer Gift Cards 11/11 - 11/17.
I got a CAT that says 'Buy $50 or more in Meijer GCs, get $5 OYNO'. That's a $5 MM per GC. What a great way to earn extra holiday shopping money.

People are stealing gas jugs, people's generators right out of their driveways...its sad how tragedies bring out the worst in some people. Did you hear about the poor mother who was stuck out in the storm with her two little boys? She was knocking on some man's door to let her in, and he wouldn't. Her poor little boys were literally blown away and died. So awful.

Power was out here for 4 days but we have Been eating out the freezer since the summer which worked out really well for us so our loss was about $15 worth of food. ;D My stores have been a lot less friendly over the pat year. I toped up my stockpile with some things over the last month or so, but I find I have to force the point to get what I want at times. And I will do that if I have to, but it was much nicer in the old coupon days of cashiers being in awe of savings. Y Ecb I'm glad you didn't lose too much from the freezer. This is one more reason I've been drying food as much as possible. I'd hate to lose all the food in the freezer. We really should eat out of the freezer more often in case of something like this. I have a lot of frozen fruit in there and it often tastes like freezer burn by the time I take it out to use it. Drying it makes it smaller, makes it sort of non-perishable and portable. I've been out of CVS for a while but just got some gift cards from Swagbucks and have gotten back in. I got the Revlon nail files and clippers which I can use for myself, for gifts, and they don't go bad. I'm hoping I can use the ECB and the GCs for Black Friday. I got a lot of stuff I could use last year so if it's the same items as last year I'm ok with those. (Even though I had to do 17 transactions to get them with low OOP!)

I just got back from CVS. I was thankful to see one of my fav cashiers and asked her about the rumor that CVS is going to discontinue the EB program.
She said, "You didn't hear it from me", and then continued to tell me that it was in the "talking" stage.
I was using an old rain check that gave EBs and she commented that it was a good idea to start redeeming them.
CVS is really the only game in town as far as couponing is concerned for me. Yes, I use what I can at Safeway, Nob Hill, Target, and WalMart, but 95% of the coupons that I redeem are redeemed at CVS.
I really am not interested in playing the points game at WAGs other than when they might have food items that are cheap after coupons that earn points. I don't really need any non-perishables that they might offer.
No matter what, I will continue to pick up my inserts on Sunday nights, but I have a feeling that this might be the last year for a very long time (if ever again) that my coupon redemption is in the thousands of dollars. I had a very slow spell between 2003 and 2006. I have a feeling that the next slow spell is going to last a lot longer.
I hope it is not true, but I would not be at all shocked if it was. WAGs, CVS's biggest competitor in the market, has almost entirely stopped offering RRs, so why should CVS continue offering Extra Bucks? It was just a matter of who would their program first.
I am pulling out all my EB rain checks and will continue to try to work them into my scenarios until I have none left.

Frugal suz. Our gas is at $3.53 a gallon. All stations are open. There are no lines anywhere. If you can get over to Pa and tell others to please do. Walmart and a bunch of other stores like Home Depot all have gas cans, you can buy a stock of them and fill those too. I hope this helps someone. I just saw on the news all the snow and no heat for many. Those gas cans could power generators.

DM - I got your envie today!! thank you SO MUCH! Its gotten to the point where all the deals are on men's deodorant, so I've been using it too (and secretly prefer it to the women's). Now off to hunt some unscented ones (or ones that are not too manly-smelling).
Sad to hear about the EBs though. I will start redeeming all the RCs I have when I get an opportunity. Thanks for the heads-up!

Beachbum: You can have my 4 if you think they'll get to you before they expire this Sunday. Will your store take expired coupons? Dancin: That will be too bad if CVS decides to pull the plug on their rewards. I couldn't afford to shop there as their prices are way too high on everything. I wonder how many people who use coupons would quit going to CVS. I got my ECB's up to over $20.00 hoping for a good Black Friday sale. I was hoping to get a couple of crock pots, but I don't see it mentioned as part of the BF deals. I keep hanging in at Rite Aid. When I think I'm done with shopping there, another really good deal comes along. Pubbler: I'm going to buy a Meijer giftcard next week for the $5.00 reward and will be working to earn $10.00 after a $100.00 purchase on mperks. Of course, I don't plan to spend anywhere near $100.00.

I admit you know how to "play the game," and see the entire "picture." It is unfortunate, due to my health issues, that I have not had the time for couponing. As you know, I used to love it! Part of me still does. I have such fond memories of some of the deals, and all of you who got me to get my 10 sets of coupons together to cash them all in. I am still using plastic zip lock bags from a deal at Ralphs and a booklet coupon from Von's (Safeway). I had over 30 boxes, and this was way back in March of 2011, so the bags are still serving our family well. People always said: "Suzi what are you doing with all of your stuff???" Well, now that I have partial paralysis on both sets of fingers and toes, I need to be stricter about taking viamins B-12, C, D, E, Magnesium, and Fish Oil. Guess what??? My stockpile of these vitamins were HUGE. I must have had 2-3 little storage bins FULL. I need to take these vitamins everyday now. In the old days of CVS markdowns, I had amassed a lot of packages of discontinued diapers and other baby products. I have been putting them together for baby shower gifts. My adult daughter has been doing the same, LOL. My baby items are almost gone now, but no matter. They more than served their purpose. I quit buying packaged and processed foods because of my medical conditions. I could not afford to ingest the sodium, sugars, carbs, and fats. If I was not concerned about diabetes, high BP, and high cholesterol, I would have been able to enjoy an occasional box of macaroni and cheese like the "good old days," LOL. I am still enjoying a lot of makeup, fingernail polish, Nivea chap stick, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, Tums, Advil, and Ecotrin. OMG>>>ECOTRIN!!!! Does anyone remember the Ecotrin deal at Rite Aid with the $3.00 Ecotrin coupons?? I think we also had RA store coupons that would sweeten the deal. I think I was paid $3.00 from the MF Q just to buy the Ecotrin. Now I use it daily for my heart health. My cleaning supplies in my garage could last me another 3 years. My paper towels and TP were piled so high in the garage that they used to almost hit the ceiling. My family of 4 has lived off of this huge pile for the last 2-3 years. This includes my 2 adult children who live in separate apartments. We are finally almost running out of TP, but I have enough paper towels to last another year of so. i have enough toothpaste to last about 2 years. Ditto for hair dye...5 years worth of Thermacare treatment pads. I still have a pink (breast cancer) revlon hairdryer from Walgreens. They (the 8 or 10 that I started out with) were so cute. I remember having coupons and paying for them with the Walgreens paper money. I used to have 8 or 10, now I am down to my last one. I gave them out over the last few years as gifts. Anyway, I don't see deals like the above anymore. The coupons are not as easy to use anymore. Even the coupons from CVS that are legit have a computer warning before they can be "pushed through" by the cashier or manager. They have much stricter controls on the coupons. I still say that the beginning of the end of it all was the stupid coupon shows that featured crazy couponers with tons of coupons, and a stockpile that none of us could match. Not only that, the grocery stores gave them special deals and allowed them to use so many coupons. We were not allowed to do this at all. Why should they make others think that they could do the same? I still say that there is always "a way."I no longer buy newspapers. It is just not worth it for me. I wait for my friends and family, and I just do not bug them as much for the coupons. The memories are just too much fun... I would like to make a few more, but I am limited as far as coupons. Gas is so expensive, and the really good deals are difficult to come by. I refuse to give up, LOL. I am sure that the deals are not as good, but like someone else says $1.00 a bottle for Jergens lotion is really good. Keep posting. Have a great day and weekend. Love, Suzi

Interesting. I had this same conversation yesterday with one of the asst. managers at my CVS. She said that the big reason behind this are the extreme couponers that come in and clear the shelf--regardless of getting EB's or not. I asked her what she considered "extreme" as I've been known to use a coupon or two (she's checked me out many times) and said I was nothing compared to the four or five folks that frequent this CVS. Guess the managers have complained to corporate that they can't keep the shelves stocked--no matter what, they will clear them. One of the ladies bought all the Venus razors (@ 12 she said), then came back when they were restocking after their truck came and cleaned them out again--even though the EB was for one. This is supposedly happening across the country so corporate is thinking about ending the program. I commented that if they were clearing the shelves and NOT getting EBs, it wouldn't matter if they changed the program as it sounded like these folks just had some kind of coupon fever. She laughed and said that their totals would start anywhere from $150-$200 and go down to @ $90-$100 after the coupons and they thought that was great. We do live in a higher COLA so maybe saving 50% is considered good for them I'm just sorry it's ruining it for everyone else. I've never been a shelf clearer (unless there's only 2 on the shelf and that's what I planned to buy), have never done back-to-back transactions, and always, always let the folks with one or two items go ahead of me. At any rate, this is what I got yesterday: 2 Libbey's pumpkin $1.76 2 Carnation condensed milk $1.76 1 Filipo Berrio olive oil $3.99 (with raincheck--thanks Dancin!) Minus: $1.00 off 2 Carnanation con.milk wyb 2 Libbey's pumpkin (10/28 RP) $1 F.Berrio IP (coupons.com $5 EB (Beauty club) Total OOP: .51 I guess I'll just playing the game until the party ends. Then I'll have to find a new hobby!

Thanks for your comments, Suzi. I know your neighbors thought you were crazy but who's laughing now?
It's a bit like insurance. I read that you should save for retirement now so you have savings when you are older. It's like your younger self taking care of your older self and I like that idea. Because who knows if Social Security will still be in existence when we need it? So that's what you've done. Your healthier self did the work and now your unwell self is benefiting.
You're right. There will always be some other deal, even if it's not the same or as good. We just have to find and share it with each other. I'm focusing now on trying to grow food instead of buy it and saving any extras I get for later (dried). Just ten years ago, who could have imagined the Internet and cell phone use as it is now. I'm sure there will be new things and ideas coming along all the time that we can figure out how to get the best deal with.
I'm always looking for good deals. That's how I found you guys.

suzi: Aw, I'm sooo sorry to hear that you are having problems with your health. I know that you were doing so well - losing weight, exercising regularly, eating well, etc. And things definitely have changed since you started the Grocery Challenge way back in January 2007 - almost SIX years ago!! I remember that Ecotrin deal too. I was at my sister's house that weekend and I had access to a couple of extra Rite Aids. I hope your health improves.

I was using an old rain check that gave EBs and she commented that it was a good idea to start redeeming them. |
Then I'll have to find a new hobby! murphath: The gal that I talked to didn't go into that much detail, but I suspected that the thought of getting rid of EBs would be directly linked to couponers. I am not suggesting that ANYONE go into PANIC MODE because we all know that IF they decide to go ahead, it won't happen overnight. I would suggest that people be as strategic as possible regarding how they use whatever time there is left to take advantage of CVS's great deals whether that be a few months from now or a couple of years from now and to focus on the products that are expensive that they use regularly and on a daily basis. As for CVS, why should they pay for the labor to ship, receive, stock, and cashier just so that we can walk out with products for free? It was fine when a few hundred people across the country were playing the CVS game, but now it seems like every CVS is being inundated with couponers. I think there has also been a recent, additional migration of couponers from WAGs to CVS ever since WAGs began to favor points over RRs. It surprises me that your store is having problems with people shelf clearing despite not earning the EBs. It seems to me that the couponers are most likely reselling the product somewhere. Since the store seems to know who they are, there is a simple solution - just limit them. It sounds like unless they do that, the store will pay the price because other customers, especially non-couponers, will become frustrated over the constant lack of stock on sale items. At the store level, I think CVS has had it with couponers. I hate the idea of being part of the problem.

Hound Alert: If anyone has any $.50 coupons for Flav-R-Pac frozen vegetables, I would really appreciate them. A local grocery has them for $1.00 this week and they double coupons. I got a raincheck for a dozen of them and need 9 more coupons. They were in an earlier September insert. TIA
Beachbum: I'll send your envies out tomorrow.
SuziQ:It's good hearing from you again. I'd love to hear how you started the Grocery Challenge. I wasn't a part of this community back in 2007, but I'm so glad I found it. Thank you for your part in starting this. My savings wouldn't be what they are today if it wasn't for all the tips and sharing that happens here.

Hi Rubyslippers, You are welcome! Thank you and so many others for your posts! I remember posting about coupons on various threads on the Women In Red Board. Other people and I would keep posting our deals, and people were incredulous at some of the things (food items included) that we could get for free or close to it. A woman by the name of "Talk 2 Me 2" would also post. We then decided that we liked posting about groceries and other things that you could buy at the grocery store. The reason why I had to save money in this area was because for a family of 5 (grandpa included) we were spending about $800 a month. Our children were growing and eating more, and we had to save some money in our budget to pay for some of their college costs. That is why she called it "The Grocery Challenge." She addressed it to me, but she was actually wanting input from everyone that liked to save money on groceries as much as we did. It was kind of fun back then, because grocery stores were doing a lot to get us back into their stores after a major grocery store strike in California. Talk 2 Me 2 did not live in California, but she liked reading about our great deals at the time. I remember buying $25.00 worth of food at Ralphs (Kroger). I would then only buy items that were on sale or drastically marked down. I would use coupons that doubled; and at the time, $1.00 coupons doubled to $2.00, and $2.00 coupons would get another $1.00 for a total of $3.00. Anyway, by the time I added my $25.00 order up, minus the coupons, my balance would be about $10.00. I would clear that $10.00 balance with a $10.00 off of $25.00 coupon. My total paid would be a only few cents, and I had all of this stuff and food to add to the family stockpile shelf. I then would get another $10.00 coupon for the next visit to the store. I would do it all again several times, sometimes buying produce or meats with the $10.00 credit. This is why the thread was so busy. The big recession had not yet hit us, and we "hit a nerve." People were starting to struggle to pay their bills. Food costs were rising, and people were not used to using coupons. We were all about sharing our couponing skills and told everyone about great deals. Ironically, Talk 2 Me 2 was Not a regular contributor at the time. Dancinmama and I were, freesalsa, Frugalsuz, and so many others. Dancinmama was the pro, and still is today. She is that good, LOL. Please chime in if you used to contribute ideas way back then. It was fun because there were so many deals and coupons to choose from back then. We simply couldn't keep up with it all, LOL. I remember stores tripling coupons. When they majors did that, I could buy a full cart of groceries for free, pile it all into my van, then go back in and buy more. Those days were "wild times." Talk2Me2 Message #1 01/26/07 12:08 PMCommunity pick : WOW It is hard to believe the first post was almost 6 years ago!
Here it is:"Suzi Q and I were talking and I think OP might get a kick out of this one. I was thinking it would be fun to post your current food budget and then how far you can shrink it. Give your strategies, your great deals. I was, at my most extravagant, paying $100-$200 per week to feed our family of four plus five kids that I look after Monday through Friday each week. I used to feed DH and myself on $25-30 per week back in the day, so I thought hmmmmm...wonder if I can pull off feeding everyone for $50 a week now? How low can I go? To be fair, I still have some food in my pantry, but this will help me to use it up instead of push it to the back and eventually throw it away. I'm going to try to do the $50 per week challenge, you may want to adjust the amount up or >eeek!< down according to how many you are feeding. As for us, my goal is to hit the $200 a month while not compromising health. I am planning on making lots of stuff from scratch and stocking up when I hit bargains. Anyone game?"
