money- Merrell should be able to be found in the deep south. If not- they can be gotten online and if you need wides, you can always order the corresponding mens or boys size. LLBean ships without a problem with returns usually. Timberland is good, but I have trouble with the fit - I have funny feet.

The run to take Mom to visit my jailbird brother went smoothly. Was exhausted when we got home and overslept by an hour on Thanksgiving, so I showed up half an hour late to dinner. Worked out ok, they were just getting ready to serve at that point. Made a run back to hometown after dinner because Grandma had to be taken to the ER for an infection. Get this... the infection was surrounding the port where they're feeding her antibiotics for another infection. So needless to say, no more no spends yet for this girl. I have to say though, it was nice to get back from my trip with money still in my pocket. Oh, and not having to work on Black Friday?.... priceless ;D

Howdy everyone - not much happening here today. I have been battling this cold and sinus thing for almost a week now and spent a very slug-like day today. However I did get writing done.
As I mentioned before (I am pretty sure I have anyway) I am participating in the annual NaNoWrMo with the goal of writing 50,000 words during the month of November.
As of this evening I am at 45,980 words ... SO CLOSE
I am working on the rough draft of a book I am calling "I'll Call You ... or Not: A look back at men I have known and dated" Within this is a section I am calling -
MEN I AM GLAD I NEVER DATED
So, for your entertainment I am going to post an excerpt for your review. Hope everyone's weekend is wonderful.
************************************************
Greg – This was a man who lived five doors down from me at my condo/townhouse complex.
Here is the scene: It is Thanksgiving Day 2007. As it usually is during November in New England it was a cold and overcast day. As I was in the kitchen prior to my guests arriving I was aware of an odd hissing noise. At first I did not pay too much attention to it, but when it had gone on for almost 20 minutes my curiosity got the better of me. So I went out my back door which leads from my kitchen to a wraparound porch on the second level of the complex. This porch runs all around the interior perimeter of the complex.
The other thing you need to know is that the units were built in 1986/1987. And because of some management issues maintenance had not been a priority for a few years. Which is to say that the wood of the deck was very weathered and dry. Some of the flooring planks were not even exterior grade or weather treated.
As I went out onto the back porch I looked to my right from where the sound seemed to be coming from. And almost immediately I found the noise’s source. A large turkey fryer set atop a tripod with a propane tank powering the fire to heat the oil.
I quickly see several problems here: Open fire + dry wood = inferno. Plus he had filled the fryer almost all the way to the top.
Do you remember Eighth Grade math and the famous story of Archimedes? The story goes like this:
This exclamation is most famously attributed to the ancient Greek scholar Archimedes. He reportedly proclaimed "Eureka!" when he stepped into a bath and noticed that the water level rose—he suddenly understood that the volume of water displaced must be equal to the volume of the part of his body he had submerged. (This relation is not what is known as Archimedes' principle—that deals with the up thrust experienced by a body immersed in a fluid) He then realized that the volume of irregular objects could be measured with precision, a previously intractable problem. He is said to have been so eager to share his discovery that he leapt out of his bathtub and ran through the streets of Syracuse naked.
Well I can see that this idiot is about to recreate this event in hot oil with disastrous results. So I quickly went to the unit’s back door and banged on it. Oh yeah – no one was watching over the rig either.
When he came to the door I said to him “You cannot use this on the deck. It is a huge fire hazard and you have too much oil in there as well.” At this point his girlfriend came up behind him and poked him in the back with an oh-so- helpful “I told you so.”
This was one of those men who really cannot believe that anyone besides them knows anything and if you ever try to point out something he is doing incorrectly he is not receptive. Fortunately another neighbor had come over and backed me up. In fact he reached over and turned off the burner. They then proceeded to carry the rig down stairs and set it up in front of his garage, on the concrete driveway. That seemed to be a much better location. Except that the fryer is still too full and no matter how much we try to explain it to him he just did not “get” it that there was not enough room for his 10 pound turkey without it forcing hot oil out and over the edge of the large pot.
All I could do was have the phone will me because I was certain I would be making a call to the fire department. And as I suspected – there was an issue. Not only did this guy DROP the turkey into the hot oil – without any method of retrieving it. Didn’t think that one through did he. He also made a second fatal flaw – the turkey he dropped into boiling oil was FROZEN!!!! Yes, you read that correctly. Consider how much of a POP you get when frying bacon and one little drop of water gets into the pan than multiply that by about 500 times. There was a huge KA-POW, hot oil poured over the edge of the kettle and when it hit the open flame the entire rig was now engulfed.
I learned that I can dial pretty fast when need be. And as they are less than ¼ mile down the street from me they were there in less than five minutes to put it out. Thank goodness the propane tank did not explode or the flames get high enough to set the underside of the deck on fire.
You just have to know that he was not going to be able to live down this little adventure for the rest of his life.

I think I knew the end of that story before I even finished reading it. I've heard so many incidents of people dropping frozen turkeys into those deep fat turkey friers. But I have to give you kudos to your writing style. Your description of the incident was bang-on. I think you have a knack for being an author, and you managed to add a touch of humor to your style of writing which made that little story fun to read. ,

It is 4 am. My heater, only heat source, just died. Do I get out of bed and get dressed and go get another one at Wal Mart where I got this one 2 years ago for $11? Or do I get another blanket and go back to sleep until a normal hour then get dressed and go get one?

So, 3cats, what did you end up deciding to do?
The weekend was a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday, Friday, and Sunday were CSD's, but Saturday was a spend day. I took my mother to a museum in Denver to see the Pompeii exhibit. I bought tickets and we had 2 meals out that day. But we both had fun, so I didn't mind the hit to my NSD's. :-)

3cats - hope you are toasty warm now!
Rocky - I love Pompeii. It was one of the highlights of our honeymoon to visit there. Just eerie.
watching Love Actually and sending emails to all my freelance clients seeing if anyone has work for me over the holidays/my leave. If I had projects I'd be able to find time to do them (like now, while babies are sleeping). And it'd be good practice for how we want our lives to run once I'm freelancing full time (or part time, as it will likely be). Plus extra money would be nice!
update on our washer/dryer: my stepdad found a crack in the drain pipe, so it was a relatively easy/cheap fix. thank god. No need to spend $1500 on that, and now we can still update our countertops before selling (the laminate? is peeling off so we want to get something closer to real granite. we have very little counter space so it shouldn't be too pricey and should make us some money selling the house. plus a friend's dad is going to do it for us).

I grabbd another blanket and slept another 5 hours. I got up and went to Wal Mart and picked up another heater for under $20 plus another blanket. I spent a total of $26 and that included tax. I am very toasty right now and this heater is very good. I have it turned on to the lowest setting and the lowest fan setting and I am hot. Now I have to keep a pair of shorts in the house when I get dressed for the day. update: 24/30 NS/CSD, 0/30 NEO.

I really need to buckle down and update my spreadsheets so I can have a number to post at the end of the week. Silver Bells - Thank you for the nice comment about the excerpt. 3cats - OH NO!!! I do hope you were able to get the heater replaced. Not something I consider an optional item, especially during the winter. Ohhh... seeing you replaced it. Sounds as though this new one is much stronger than the previous one. Take care of yourself. rennee - Glad to hear your trip to see your brother went well. I know it is always a very long day for you when you make that trip. Rocky - How did you like the exhibit? I did not realize it was touring the U.S. Redwagon - Glad it was a quick fix this time. But I would guess you will be looking at beefing up your washer/dryer replacement fund. So another weekend where it seems I lost my mind!!! ***************************************************************************** My annual cookie baking day for gifts and parties. We made the following: Peanut Butter Blossoms (85), Zimtsterne - a German cinnamon cookies (58), Cut out Butter cookies frosted and decorated (101), Chocolate Chip (86) and Maple cookies with a maple glaze (93). That is a total of 423 cookies or just over 35 dozen!!! www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.500777609955480.122445.100000697355911&type=1 Complete set of photos on Photobucket: s25.photobucket.com/albums/c72/honey36_/Exchange%20Students/Pauline%20L%20and%20Cha visa%202012-2013/Cookie%20Making%20Sunday%2025Nov2012/ And if you missed last week's baking adventure I had 15 girls ranging from 7 to 16 in the church kitchen where we made 24 pies from scratch for a local homeless advocacy group and their Thanksgiving dinner. Yesterday was a NSD and today is going to be one as well. If I bestir myself to leave the house today, it will be to use the free pizza certificate we got when moving into the apartment and to use the last of the vending machine money for the week on cherry coke. I'm making excellent progress of BFF's Christmas present/divorce quilt. I think with another solid day's work today I can have the top done. From there it'll be quick, I don't quilt my quilts, I tie them. Lazy? Why yes I am. ;D
The big question mark for me right now is what to get for my new roommate. I generally prefer to make something, but it would be very difficult for me to make her something and manage to keep it a surprise. After all, her computer is right next to my sewing table. Hmmm... I'll have to consider this problem while I sew today.
7/10 NSD I just realized that if tomorrow is a NSD like I think it's going to be, I'll actually be pretty close to my goal for the month. Wow. Didn't think that was going to happen.

Rocky Mtn Saver: 5 NSD/13 CSDTo whomever had asked about the Pompeii exhibit: Yes, it was very well done! They had actors in character and stations where they had items to hold and things for the kids to touch. There were also a selection of short videos showing daily life, architecture, and the city's final hours. And finally, after two trips to Italy including the city of Pompeii itself, I finally got to see the casts of the bodies of those who didn't make it. When I visited the archeological site in 2000, the casts were not housed at the site, but rather in the Naples museum where we did not go. So, 10 years later here in Denver, I finally got to see what I'd expected to see in Italy. Ironic!

Update: 17 NSDs and 6 CSDs
Just a quick drop in to say hello. I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving. I have been busy -- so what else is new-- I took a day to visit the renaissance festival the day after Thanksgiving, back to school this week with a few days of a conference as well. Parking downtown is expensive -- 2 of my cs days were for parking-- I hope to get reimbursed for it but who knows. I did learn a lot at the conference so it was well worth it. Back to the students tomorrow.
Happy belated birthday, Muttley!

Shamelessly feeding nickles into the vending machine today for my late-afternoon caffeine fix. But they're still out of the vending machine fund, so it still counts as a NSD.
Having a rough week at work, I'm working hard and taking lots of calls, but it's not translating into very many sales. Which means that January will be a little lean, money-wise. I still get my base hourly rate, but I won't have much in the way of commission. sigh. It will get better. It's been a struggle the last couple of weeks because I still hadn't been assigned a supervisor. But I finally got my assignment today. It's hard to really improve and reach your potential as a new employee when you don't have anyone to go to with problems or someone who is following up with you and giving you feedback as you go. I'm trying, but there's only so much I can figure out on my own. And despite my whining, I'm still much happier here than I ever was at the fabric store.

Evening everyone -
Since I really don't have many places where I can share this break down you all are the lucky recipients.
In looking over my numbers and budget this month I really have no idea how I am going to pay the mortgage. And it is the scariest feeling in the world!!!!
I called the mortgage company today and let them know. I also spoke to a department that deals with Homeowner Assistance and hardship. I have sent them tons of completed forms, a hardship letter and will be praying that my 11 years of good payments - actually paying more than the monthly payment will buy me some good will and karma. They have a Forebearance Program I am hoping they will let me do where I can postpone payments for a few months and tack them onto the end of the loan. At this point I really don't know what else to do.
I am not willing to compromise my sense of integrity and just stop paying and let the bank take the property as one of my so-called friends suggested.
I also got a letter in the mail today that the extended unemployment program I am on will end on December 29, 2012. So as of January 1 I will have NO income of any kind coming in and I will still have bills and food to pay for.
Needless to say I had a rather epic mental meltdown earlier today.
I just needed to vent this someplace where I am fairly confident I will not be lambasted for not having an additional year or more of an emergency fund. My savings is just about gone and at this point I may have to consider liquidating most of my 401(k).

Honey: Hugs to you. I'm so sorry that there isn't more I can do to help. I hope that things work out with the Mortgage company and the Forebearance. Sending you hugs and wishes of good luck.

Honey: remember the old saying? " It's always darkest before the dawn." It is true. I have been where you are and look where I am today because of the ladies on this board. You will get throught this and you will come out ahead. final update; 29/30 NSD/CSD, 0/5 EOD. If my car hadn't broken down, I'd have had a perfect month. I didn't even eat out.
