Bonny - Now THAT I need! I have 5 barfers and #6 has been showing up more and more so it will be 6 barfers sooner or later. $30+ a pop at the dry cleaners is getting 'spensive! I've been training them to run to the tiled part of the house. They just don't always make it.

Anne, I warned you about the moldy gasket problem!!! I know Bonny! I can't even say I was ignorant. I can't tuck a rag where the mold is growing because I can only see it through holes in the gasket, it's got multiple layers. So I've been wiping out the part I have access to. It looks like the gasket is going to have be replaced entirely. So I found the receipt and apparently I bought it in February of 2011. So not only do I have a moldy gasket in my washer I apparently have one in my head too. Lost a whole year.

I had to replace my washer last year and wound up with a HE top loader without the center agitator. I lucked (hopefully) into the floor model that had been purchased and returned to the store because it wouldn't fit.....so about $300 off.
Even though I have only used it a month (I got sick a month after I bought it), it's great and does wash my queen size quilt without issue.
When I went out looking, I realized that I could not fit a front loader into my laundry room...me, an open washer door and an open dryer door wouldn't fit.
I'm utterly amazed as to how dry it spins out the clothes, just don't really like that it takes nearly an hou to run a load of wash. It used to be that the dryer was the limiting factor as to how quickly I can do laundry, now it's the washer since the load usually dries in about 20 min.

I'm thinking my next washer might be a top loader HE. My aunt really likes hers as well. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is hanging over the side of a washer to get the clothes out again. I'm curious how they work with no agitator though.

When we replaced our w/d January 2010, we lucked into a floor model deal (and possible mislabel of individual price as a price for the set) for a Fischer & Paykal set of top loading washer AND dryer. Given the space constraints of the hallway they are in, I love that neither is a front loader. My washer has no agitator and weighs the clothes before deciding how much water to use. That means I can wash a single pair of jeans or a stuffed load of towels and bedding, and it always uses an optimum amount of water. For bulky but lighweight things like comforters, I put it on the comforter cycle.

Count me in with the group of folks hanging on (fingers crossed) to old but steady appliances. There are a couple of class-action lawsuits out there right now over the front-loaders. So glad I resisted. When my machines finally DO die this is what I'm getting: www.staber.com/Top loading and American made to boot!

I love our HE front-loader. I'm wondering if you got a lemon. My inlaws got one when they first came out and theirs always takes forever to wash (we call it "the longest minute" when it gets to 1 minute on the countdown - and if you time it, it takes another 10-12 minutes from "the last minute") and everything smells moldy. I know they have a Whirlpool so when we got ours I refused to consider a Whirlpool. We got a Kenmore model. We paid $1500 for both the washer and dryer, including sales tax, delivery, etc. It wasn't the biggest drum but pretty close, and it has a sanitary cycle (for cloth diapers which I was planning on using).
I've actually been considering having a tune-up - I think there's lint build up around the dryer since it doesn't dry as efficiently. They're now 6 years old but still work fine. I've never had to drain them, although I did hear you need to drain the LG models. I run bleach on it through the "clean washer" cycle a couple times a year and that's about it.

Honest to God, I thought that the headline was about some kind of fork lift. Thank God I only have to deal with top loading washing machines. ( if this is what we're discussing ) Not everyone knows what an HE is, ya know.... Consumer Reports has pretty much turned me against the idea of wanting a $1400 molding front loader, although I like their looks...we are using a 15 year old top loader and it refuses to die. An old Sears one, I think.
