Not to harp on the thyroid, but you might want to have a full panel done ( TSH, free T3 and T4). These values can change as we get into our 40s. Also, if you take synthroid it might be worth switching to another thyroid replacement med for a few months to see if that is the culprit

Get a humidifier or vaporizer for your bedroom. It might help, and would be a cheap fix. You're right, I should try that. Getting enough sleep would be heaven. Even it doesn't help it won't hurt anything. Thanks. Humidifiers and vaporizers are tricky. They must be kept scrupulously clean and the filters checked often, otherwise they have a tendency to cause more harm than good. I have kids with asthma. Sometimes just standing over a pot of boiling water is enough to stop the coughing and improve breathing. Other times, they need their rescue inhalers. Do you feel better in a hot, steamy shower? Also, when your coughing fits happen, check your posture. If it is chronic post-nasal drip, try sitting up straight and not slouching. Again, won't cure the problem but will ease the cough. Keep pursuing this. Persistent coughing can be debilitating and worrisome.

I had this kind of coughing when my asthma was a problem. The thing that helped the most was getting a good quality HEPA air filter. It must be able to capture a high % of very small particles and also be able to process a large quantity of air per hour.
In addition to Rx medicine, try increasing the amount of water that you drink.

Small cell lung cancer has the symptoms you describe and can not be seen on an x-ray much of the time.

A co-worker had similar symptoms and they eventually determined that it was being caused by the blood pressure meds he was on (can't remember the name).

I'm sure it is something seriously legitimate, but it does make one want to say it is an illness that draws teenage girls to the mall in their miniskirts and big hair and forces them to buy copious amounts of designer clothes, shoes, and handbags with Daddy's Platinum Amex. Like totally rad. Whatever.

Well I don't have that! One of my docs thought it was a new blood pressure med that was causing the coughing and switched me to another one, so we'll see.

I had a persistent dry couch for months. It turned out to be caused by an ear infection. My doctor explained why an ear infection would cause coughing, but that was a few years back and I don't remember how one related to the other. Antibiotics took care of it.
