DH was channel surfing last night and found a documentary about potatoes.
He actually said "oh, this sounds interesting" and started watching it. To his credit, he realized how ridiculous his comment was and laughed at himself. Then he went back to watching the show.
Is that what I have to look forward to in life? Potato documentaries?

I feel your pain, sister. My boys watch endless Nova. The one on String Theory was excruciating.

As an irish person I would like to warn you not to mock potatoes. They are a key part of history, and have provided nutrition at a reasonable cost for centuries. We would be extinct without them.
Don't mess with potatoes.

I'm actually north irish/protestant. So, all of the pasty-skin of the irish, without any of the fun, drunk, catholic side. You have to remove that beer, given the tee-totaler nature of my heritage.
My people are quite boring - prim and proper. I'm a scourge on the bloodline.

On weekends, my husband stays up and watches documentaries like 'what ever happened to so and so.' when I wake up the next morning, he'll fill me with facts like did you know that MC Hammer is broke, or the guy from 3 Dog Night lives in a gutter? Really, who gives a sh#t!!!

"Removing beer from any situation is verboten." The German Irish in me would agree. And potatoes are very important to the Germans too. I'm sure the Potato Documentary was fascinating... ;D

I like watching "Life After People" and "Planet Earth", but they're actually interesting. DH will watch that one Monty Python documentary multiple times....

ETA: DF also watched one with me (not sure if it was Nova or not) on Einstien and special relativity as it relates to space's gravatational fields and he actually got sucked into it as well

Ok, I thought we were the only ones watching that last night. I found it very interesting how they make potatoe flour and most charities buy that to ship to overseas locations. Apparently potatoe flour ways less then wheat flour.

Planet Earth rocks MJ! We purchased it from Amazon. We have watched it twice with DS3, an episode or two on Sunday evenings in winter. Two winters running. You should buy it for Joey! David Attenborough is getting very old. He has an awesome series on Dinosaurs too (we don't own that one though). We also bought his Madagascar series but that's more because I lived there for 18 months in a former lifetime. But Planet Earth is a classic.

My DH is obsessed with BBC documentaries on a) aging rockers and b) plane crashes.
I think I might actually prefer a documentary on potatoes, at least I eat those.

It was this one. A new PBS* documentary, The Botany of Desire, premieres Wednesday night (tonight!) at 8pm on PBS stations throughout the US. It’s based on the popular Michael Pollan book of the same name, and I urge you to carve out two hours (in most markets between 8pm – 10pm) on Wednesday night to watch it. The program is packed with science, history, and beautiful photography. I’ve seen the film in advance, and I highly recommend it, particularly if you’re interested in any of the four plants featured in it: tulip, marijuana, potato, and apple. By telling the stories of these plants, Pollan explains how in some ways the plants are manipulating us, rather than the other way around — in the same way that flowers “use” bees to spread their pollen, these plants have “used” humans to spread themselves across the planet and out-compete other plants. One note: the program may not be suitable for young children, as there is use of the word “sex” (as applied to plants) and discussion of marijuana. It also might be pretty boring for the under-twelve set (despite beautiful flower photography), unless they’re thoroughly nerdy. The one thing I really look forward to when I stay in a hotel (or the hospital) is having cable. Last year when we went to state fair, the most interesting thing on TV was a documentary on tomatoes.

Did you see last night's? I did. I especially like the part where the lady asked Matt if he thought she met the definition of a hoarder and he says "Oh hell yeah!"

DH would love to watch a documentary on potatoes. If they show farm equipment during the documentary that would be a huge extra bonus. Mine would be thrilled just to see a show about farm equipment. It is actually a step up from his normal TV watching which is CSPAN. He got excited when he realized we get CSPAN 2 and 3 and BBC America's Top Gear on our cable. I really am doomed.
