My kitchen gadget addicted MIL keeps buying me junk which I end up giving away. Once she gave us a waffle iron, and it was probably a very nice expensive one. I made waffles exactly one time and decided they weren't worth the mess, not when pancakes serve the same purpose. I gave it away. what was really funny was MIL was lecturing DH that he needed to loose weight not a month before she gave us the waffle iron.

I threw my ice cream scoop away, hoping that making it harder to dig the stuff out would make me eat less of it. Hasn't worked. I just bend our regular spoons now. Use a fork and eat straight out of the carton.

I've given up asking my MIL for kitchen stuff for me, she somehow manages to get the wrong stuff. She loves kitchen crap but then she's always complaining about not having space...

Two just hit me this morning. Egg slicer: my mom always had one and I did for YEARS, Probably had a bunch over 40 years. Last one died about 2005 or 2006. Have NOT replaced. Just used it to slice the rare egg sandwich or chop an egg for tuna. Just as easy to do w/a knife. Metal pastry scrapper/lifter: never had one. Don't need one. Just as easy to do w/a knife whether it is pie dough or chopped veg (like I see TV chefs doing). Dang, in the last two years I've bought a commercial egg slicer (accountants like those nice even circles of egg without the blown out sides) and a bench scraper (it can go in the dish washer, a decent knife can't). I live for the annual 50% off sale at the local restaurant supply house. Armloads of stuff I didn't know that I needed until I saw it. I guess that either makes me a kitchen geek or a dufus, or both.

I have an egg slicer only because my mom brought one to me. I haven't used it yet but it sure does take up a lot of space in my one drawer I stick that kind of crap in. Mom loves her salad shooter, she uses it to grate cheese a lot.

I just bought myself a microplane! I have been wanting one FOREVER and they were marked down 60% at the grocery store because they were discontinuing the entire line. Best $3 I have spent in a long time!

Metal pastry scrapper/lifter I use mine all the time. It's a must-have in my kitchen.
I own two. I couldn't live without my crock pot. Okay, I could live, but I'd be hungry. Today I'm making maple orange glazed chicken with squash and sweet potatoes. It's cooking away right now.
I want a microplane. It's on my list of gadgets I need.
One gadget that I use a ton is a little can strainer. That thing really comes in handy.

Pretty sure chefs do that because they always have an oven on and preheated, so it's no biggie to just toast some bread. For most people, it makes no sense to heat up the whole oven for just a slice of bread or a bagel. Much less time and electricity wasted to just stick it in a toaster. NO, they do it home. My DS and my SIL. And it tastes real good that way too. On the stove TOP. I specified using a pan. Geesh, what people will pick apart. A comment isn't picking. You're gonna need some thicker skin. I can't help it if your relatives are weird and use a whole lot more energy and time than necessary to toast bread. (Now that's picking.)

OK, now this is getting funny. I can't believe you posted back. I only explained the details. Isn't that what you were looking for with your comments? BTW I noticed you give the thick skin reply to everyone you try to bait. I hope your day is pleasant.

Ooooh, I bought one at Target for DH a couple of months ago. I don't remember why though. But he loves it.

I have 3 crock pots and was thinking about another ... The small and large ones are special things types... and sometimes I could use a second one of the 'regular' size. I have been on a gadget bender lately... cherry pitter, spiral cutter... but I just splurged on a vitamix, so i am going to have to cut myself off for awhile... Plastic, slotted spoons/dippers are good for getting fried things out of oil... or isolating things from broth, etc...

I think the most useless kitchen gadgets are the one-use ones (banana slicers, strawberry slicers, the hot dog cooker-machine that looks like a toaster, avocado scoops . . . )

We've got one too Nancy. DH was telling me this morning that the new ones are out and supposed to be quieter. The kids keep telling DH "Daddy, too loud"

Ooooo, I LOVE my Vitamix . . . I make a smoothie with it almost every morning. It's also great for blended drinks (it crushes ice like a pro), soups, sauces and dressings :-)
Love love love

I own a mandoline and two microplanes. First reason for purchasing them: They were sexy toys. Yes, I just said that. Second reason: they actually are useful. And yes, you do need the hand guard. I almost turned part of my hand into super-thin potato chips a few weeks ago, slicing away happily and having just a grand old time.

I pretty much love it. It can be a little loud, but not for very long... ... I've been blending up a storm. Since I gave up dairy i've been doing some vegan recipes that rely on nuts and also been doing some smoothies, fruit 'ice creams'/sorebets, made sauce last week, want to guacamole next (for which i will also use my avacado tool ... I use my pinapple 'slicer' all the time.

I want a mandolin slicer but a co-worker sliced off part of her knuckle using one without the guard.. so I'm a little hesitant. I wouldn't mind a microplane either... The trick is to get one of those cut proof gloves. I got one because some items just don't fit in the guard nice. No blood since then, and I've definitely hit the blade several times with the glove on.

Oh man... I also just got a 'real' french fry/veggie cutter... professional grade enough its supposed to do sweet potatoes... I used my amazon points for it though, so that should count for something, right ?? .. have to cut myself off...
I have been cooking at home SO much more though... and such BETTER things...

I was thinking about buying a third, small crock pot. I have a large one with a digital timer that once it counts down it automatically switches to the "warm" setting. That really helps to not have dried out meat at the end of the work day. I have a medium size crock pot with a locking lid for travel. But I was thinking about getting an even smaller crock pot for things like dips.
I would also like a mandolin.

I have a very large crock pot and a tiny one. The small one is perfect for dips and we use it alot. It holds maybe two cups. Only one heat setting though.
