PK, you must have been in my older brother's house. TV there is on nonstop. When I visit them, I have to stay in a hotel just to get away from it. I cannot stand the background noise, and I don't get it at all. All the kids have their own TV, too, so that's five sets in a four-bedroom house. You should try going in there when all the sets are on and tuned to a different station, and all the bedroom doors are open. It sounds like an insane asylum after the meth delivery. LMAO I'm guilty of "too much television" as well. But there is no doubt that kids will find other things to do when the tube is turned off. Now that could present it's own set of problems, but that's a whole nother story!

Unplug the TV and watch the pounds melt off of not only the kids, but the parents as well. I think is not the main issue. Yes, too much TV is bad, but we're supposed to have our kids do about an hour of reading and homework every night which is just as sedentary. I know I read A LOT as a kid. I guess I should blame Nancy Drew for my fat. My Sis is/was a reader as well. I'd say this still has to be better then the mindlessness of the boob tube. Regardless, I get your point that it's still sedentary. I believe though that we've increased our sedentary time. (as a general rule) And what was considered sedentary 25 years ago, may be considered active by some today.

That's another good point. We have people and machines to do things for us because we are too busy to do them ourselves. Cleaning people, yard men, pool boys (not to be confused with cabana boys ) do labor around the house that we used to do ourselves. I'm not suggesting anyone kick the help to the curb. Not suggesting anyone is lazy because they have a cleaning lady or a guy coming over to mow the lawn. Just realizing that stuff many people once did themselves and their own homes they no longer do.

Shooby: "You can't have a child outside unsupervised. Kids legally cannot be left alone in my state until they are 12."
Are you saying it is against the law in your state for children under the age of 12 to be outside unsupervised? Or are you stating it is against the law in your state for children under the age of 12 to be left alone at home unsupervised.
Do you mind me asking what state that is?

She's made that claim before - at least she's confining it to her state now I don't know of any states that have a specific cut-off age after which a child can be left unsupervised. Most of the guidelines are fairly fluid and deal with a "reasonableness" standard. Some 7-8yos are fine at home alone (I was) and some 14-15yos aren't. The laws usually reflect this.

Florida doesn't have a law on that either. They recommend that no child be left alone before 12, but then go on to say that it is the maturity of the child that is the most important thing to consider not the age. My DD I could leave alone no problem at 9. She started out with small amounts of time and we worked up from there. My son is 9 and I know him way too well to leave him home alone. The only thing scarier than leaving my 9 year old home alone for a little while are the people who never let their kids do anything by themself then when they are 16 hand them the keys to the car and say have fun. ETA Shooby is in Fl not me.

I thought OH. I am in Ohio too. And I leave my 8 and 5 year old outside to play. Yes, without me hovering over them every single minute I do check on them every 10 min or so. So far no CPS or poilce has chastised me for that. Or for that matter any of our other neighbors. I guess I live in a different Ohio than her.

I see kids playing without adults hovering over them all the time here too (Iowa). As far as I know CPS has not been called on any of my neighbors.

My kids are still too young, but frankly, I am more concern with them hurting themselves than with some random pedophile popping up in my back yard to molest them...

My neighbor (two houses over) always makes her older kids escort my 6yo DD back to my house when she's done playing there. It's TWO HOUSES. When I told her it was unnecessary because I let my DD walk by herself to the bus stop (four houses away) I got quite the look. Apparently I'm sending my DD into the lion's den.

What are Florida's laws on when they can get drivers lisences or get a job again? Thirty years old. But with a parent's permission slip it's 28.

Years ago, my girlfriend, a single mom, was working in Michigan, and her son watched her other kids until she got home from work. After school, that is. A neighbor called and she was told legal age was 12. Her son wasn't quite which caused her an issue. The only thing I can think is that they ran wild until it annoyed the neighbors into calling.

I'd have to check the chart to see if my older daughter would be overweight or obese right now. She was tall and thin as a baby/toddler. Then around 5 or 6 she got chubby for a while. Maybe 4-6 months. Over the following six months she went through a growth spurt and add several inches, without gaining any weight. By the end of it she was back to slim. She's been doing it ever since. She'll chub up for a while, then sprout like a weed.
I did the same thing as a kid. Although I didn't grow as early as she does. I got pretty chubby at the tail end of sixth grade. In the sixth grade I was the shortest person in my class, not the shortest boy, the shortest person. I went into seventh grade one of the taller boys though, and back to looking like a stick. I spent three months gaining weight, then three months growing and with horrible knee pain.
My younger daughter has been rail thin and tall for her age, but not as tall as her sister, since her six month check up.
Their pediatrician isn't worried about either of their weights, since they stay in line with their height, so we don't worry about it either. However on a BMI chart only my younger daughter is a normal weight. I'm overweight, even though I've got a 28 inch waist, and my older daughter is usually overweight, or borderline obese. Honestly, I think the BMI chart is bullshit for the most part. It assumes that everyone that shares a certain height should have the exact same body, and that body shouldn't have much muscle on it. Spend even a little time lifting weights, and you'll never fall in the normal range on a BMI chart.

My brothers and I were fat as babies and slimmed out when we got to the toddler stage and started walking. None of us our heavy as adults. I gained some weight in the past five years or so, but after I had DS in June I started really watching, and I've lost my pregnancy weight plus 10 pounds. Easier to lost 10 to 20 pounds now than wait until I have to lose 50.
DD was long and skinny as a baby, and she is as a toddler. I think some of it is just how she's built, and she is very active and not a big eater. Even when she watches television, she watches a lot of shows with music so she's up dancing around the living room. DS is not quite 4 months old, and he's build like a little linebacker. It will be interesting to see how he develops.
I make a real effort to feed us all healthy foods even if they aren't necessarily homemade.

My BIL is a police officer in MI and he just told me the other day that MI doesn't have a law specifying a minimum age. I lived in Michigan most of my life...they do not have a minimum age. We had a boy that was in Kindergarden that would roam the streets while both his parents worked at their restaurant. The police only picked him up if it was after curfew. My kids would get off the bus and be home alone for a little bit after school. My oldest was 4th grade, 1st grade, and then K. They were never home alone more than an hour and usually it was only 30 minutes or so. Now I have lived on many military bases and they usually have their own rules. Most bases I have lived on kids cannot be left alone unless they were 12 and older.

I have 2 kids. DD is considered obese. DS is normal. DS isn't really too interested in food. DD loves food, and I often have to limit what she eats to the point that it's a battle. She is more active than DS. I try to focus her on different activities other than food, and I try to keep food out of sight, out of mind for her. It's tiring. And difficult. And I feel guilty and I'm trying very hard not to give her food issues, but I think she already has them. I'm curious about something. Does DD have any allergy issues? Not at all. ETA: It's more like her appetite doesn't have an "off" switch. She starts eating and doesn't want to stop. She sees food and wants to eat.

Swamp, mainstream people won't agree with me, but sometimes that is how an intolerance presents itself. Its weird, but while you are eating something that is bad for your body, your body may actually want more of it... like a 'bad addiction' to simplify it too much i'm sure. You could try eliminating major allergens just to see if it had an impact. Although i have found it harder to carry through those things with kids... who don't often like to have to avoid certain foods.
It is hard in our house because son can eat anything he wants and be skinny... (healthy is another matter)... daughter will not be able to do that.
I was my skinniest in college... but I was far from healthy. I was actually probably also my least healthy.

The problem with not home made is the processing and preservatives. I do think these are an issue. Giving up corn lately I lost 20 lb in the past 4 months... no other changes. But i'm not sure its just that the corn was bad for me, but that avoiding it means basically avoiding a majority of processed things. ?? ... a combination i'm sure.

I was my heaviest in college. I used to eat a nice big meal, have ice cream and on my way out of the dining hall grab a cheeseburger or a grilled cheese. not to mention the beer calories. I was also lifting weights and taking supplements and things.... Oh to be young again.

Interesting. Of course I only have what she said about it to go on so what do I know? I figured someone complained about her brood and this was used to keep them in line.

Not at all. ETA: It's more like her appetite doesn't have an "off" switch. She starts eating and doesn't want to stop. She sees food and wants to eat. Grandson was this way. Found out that he was not absorbing the nutrients in the food he was eating, his body knew it and therefore, he constantly craved food. Once his diet was adjusted to compensate for the problem, he stopped eating everything in sight. Is it possible to be obese and still not be absorbing the nutrients needed? other than her propensity to eat and being heavy, she's very healthy and strong.

I worked out all the time in college. I also lived on carbs, lots of pasta and bread bowls, and given what i've learned about my body and gluten, its no wonder I was all kinds of anemic and lacking basic nutrients, so sickly ... my hair was dingy and wouldn't grow, my nails flaked off...
... but I was skinny...
