There are so many articles on the happenings in Egypt and the Middle East too, I thought a thread where they can be accumulated and commented on might be a good idea..or a bad one. Here's one I just came across..dealing with the Egyption Military, their possible agenda in the current situation and possible in what will be the situation of Mabarak leaves .. ------------------------------------------------------------------ news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110131/ts_yblog_thelookout/all-eyes-on-egypts-military-how-will-it-respond------------------------------------------------------------------------ As mass demonstrations continue to threaten Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's grip on power, the country's powerful military is emerging as perhaps the crucial player in determining the course of events in the Middle East's most populous nation. Already, the army -- which has long enjoyed close ties to the ruling regime -- is playing a key role in the efforts of the embattled Mubarak regime to control the growing chaos. Over the weekend, after police withdrew, the army deployed to cities across Egypt, keeping order but generally not forcing protesters from the streets. Today, the Egyptian government received permission from Israel to move soldiers into the Sinai Peninsula, which has been largely demilitarized since a 1979 peace treaty between the two countries. And Mubarak has now turned to three career military men -- including Omar Suleiman, a former army general and head of the intelligence services, now appointed vice president -- to help run the government. But the army has promised not to fire on peaceful protests, and has said it recognizes the legitimacy of the protester's demands. If it were to turn completely on Mubarak, he could lose his already tenuous hold on power. The Lookout asked Stephen Zunes, a professor of politics and chair of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of San Francisco, about how the Egyptian military might respond, and how that response might influence events: {Continues in the thread..click on link}

Last gasp of Egyptian Government ..train service shut down indefinitly.., stopped. Roads blocked, internet as reported cut off, cell phones cut off....Army says will not fire , no violance on populace...food shortages...People now in square and not leaving...Mubarak says he will work constitutional reforms and legislation, but doubt it will be accepted...Shops are closed , many looted, gas stations are closed, Banks closed...people are growing agitated , people are asking for international to help, pressure...
The thing is , It seems they want him and the ruling party out..but there really no partys ready to step in....military right now are friendly but tomorrow who knows...people are getting anxiouse...

Here is another article regarding the Muslim Brother hood... news.yahoo.com/s/atlantic/20110131/cm_atlantic/themuslimbrotherhoodthefutureofegypt6780--------------------------------------------------------------- The Muslim Brotherhood: The Future of Egypt? . Caitlin Dickson Caitlin Dickson – Mon Jan 31, 12:44 pm ET WASHINGTON, DC – As protests in Cairo continue, attention has turned to the Muslim Brotherhood, the 83-year-old Islamist opposition group. Members of the long-suppressed organization have recently been arrested in the protests. The opinions of the Muslim Brotherhood are vast and varied, as beliefs that the group's sole motivation is to oust President Mubarak and bring peace to the country are contradicted by proclamations that the Brotherhood plans to take over Egypt and create an anti-American state. Here is a sampling of the current discussion and the questions everyone is asking {Continued in depth , click on link}

Fareed Zakaria feels Obama needs to make a phone call to Mubarak and just tell him.."It's over, you have to leave." How you leave is up to you, but leave you must."
Part of the problem says Zakaria is , he , Mubarak , did open up the society a bit, newspapers allowed to criticize, economic improvements and then you get aspirations and you have a autocratic regime, military governing..it just doesn't work... people want more.
Feels the Saudis will be fine..they have the wealth, their people are prosperous, taken care of yet will never accept Mubarak being forced out...Kuwait too, just gave all citizens $3000 in celebration of something that wasn't anything..these places buy their peoples loyalties...a difference in what Beck was suggesting.

It's not that...there was one article , there are a lot of them out there and more coming on line as we chat..posters/readers if interested can pick up information where ever...this is a hugh story...possible to rival the Berlin wall and collapse of the Iron Curtain..as was just reported by a CNN reporter who's family is in Egypt, could deteriorate tomorrow after the march ..people are walking into Cairo from the Nile delta, trains have been stopped..no one knows how the military will react...lots of worry here.
Sorry if you felt I was raining on your parade. I don't get into those things..whose thread as if that is important.

Really?
Well, you also duplicated my Roe v. Wade thread, so I was just wondering if you're going to make a habit of duplicating other's threads? I never said anything, nor did I contact mods, but I never intentionally try to duplicate another's thread. I consider that disrespectful.

I never said anything, nor did I contact mods, but I never intentionally try to duplicate another's thread. I consider that disrespectful. If I did I wasn't aware of it and I believe you are getting a bit to touchy , so suggest take a walk around the block and relax and enjoy the forum, and get off your high horse, it doesn't become you. PS Know I have to take time and find the damn thread your talking about. I never think of a thread as 'MINE " when I put one up..it usually a thread of interest to me , with a post of a idea..and then what happens to it happens. Gets some interest or it drops to where ever uninteresting threads go to...out of site out of mind . Roe vs Wade...I hated all the crap on that one, know one was listening to what people was posting just chomping on the bit to get their cracks in...no thought or interest to what others were saying. possible that's why I posted though for the life of me I have no idea what I posted..let me go find it unless it's dropped to that place I said uninteresting threads drop to. Oh wait one, you mean the Poll? Hell it was a poll..simple a damn Poll . I was fed up with the crap that was being posted on yours, I just wanted to cut to the chase and see how many who were posting, where they stood on the topic..could not get a read from all the crap posted. That people were posting on It, a poll thread..surprised me, think I said something to that effect and didn't get into it much with posts beyond the poll , if I got into it at all. Yeah, relax a bit, take a walk, clear your head, get off the high horse is my suggestion.

You weren't aware of it? Your a little premature..should wait till people answer you..see above..and I never lie..I may post wrong facts, make a mistake but if I say how I feel and do things..you can take it to the bank. And again, take a walk, clear your head , or don't , no concern of mine your hurt feelings, when nothing purposly done by me against what ever you feel was a sleight. I am use to dealing with adults, not children, guess I had you figured wrong in that case.

I like Dezi's thread better. Let's have Dezi be in charge of adding threads of Lakhota's original threads, and post to Dezi's threads instead of Lakhota's. At least Dezi always talks about his feelings on the message he posts, rather than Lakhota who just posts articles and disappears......

Watching Charlie Rose now.
He has some great guests on tonight, Steven Cohen and Bruce Riedel, Anthony Shadid, Douad Ajami, Neil Macfarquar, Emad Shain, Tarek Masoud .
Talking about Egypt, how it might play out...Mubarak is a survivor...we possibly haven't seen the counter strategy yet....does the Egyptians populace have the will power to stay the course...Arabs lands have never seen anything like this...not use to it...populer uprising, never seen before.
The army is going to be critical in this situation..can the Egyptians handle a democracy...who would be able to tell Mubarak it's time to go.
The new Vice President, Omar Suleiman..he is credited with saving Mubarak's life one time..Mubarak has mentioned that..Suleiman as a interim leader till new power moves in..possible acceptable able and he could tell him it's time to move on.
Best scenario from the commentators stand point , relative peaceful change with elections in the fall, possible not September, a few months after..allowing parties , leaders to emerge as the only group that seems to be together is the Muslim Brother Hood at this time with possible Suleiman as interim leader , not interested in a permanent position, till that time and Mubarak telling the people after 30 years, it's time to retire.
Worst case scenario, Mubarak , Suleiman , the Military hanging on, playing it out , a stand off, or worse where force would be used.
Israelis have a problem, as one of the commentators , Steven Cohen, said.
They believe that the peace with Egypt was a once in a life time thing, and would love to have Mubarak be in charge till he was 120 years old. They are scared who ever takes over, they don't trust them to keep the peace or be as cooperative in their dealings.
What Cohen says is that is where they have it wrong. When Sadat said no more wars..the Israeli's thought he was speaking to them when in reality they he was speaking to his own people. They , Egyptians , did not want any more wars with Israel and he knew that.
The middle class did not want their sons training a good part of their lives to cross the canal, meaning the vast majority of Egyptians want the peace to continue.
The Israelis have it all wrong on this fact, peace is wanted by the Egyptian populace.

Saw an interview with an "American/Egyptian" University student studying in Egypt. He has an Egyptian father, an American mother (from Ohio) who is protesting in the street with "his people". His Grandfather is/was an Egyptian Army General. ( I am not sure if he is still active) He is happy to continue his education in Egypt and is looking forward to the change that is coming. He calls himself an Egyptian/American, who will be happy to see his children and Grandchildren raised in Egypt. No mention of the USA. Why is it, that it seems like males who are mixed race Middle Eastern/American always consider themselves other than American?

Not all do, but we forget that as nationalistic and patriotic as Americns can be, so can those of other countries. In this case , this young man has lived here, schooled here, and will know that "Americans are not the evil devils" hopefully and be able to talk from experience while living there. Egypt has a history of 8000 years, why not be proud of that heritage. The earth has become a small place ...
