Doesn't EXCEL save automatically?

I have been working on Excel spreadsheet without closing it for 4 days.
Then it got closed somehow. Does it mean I lost it?
I always thought it is saves automatically every 15min or so???

I am ready to go hang myself!!! Hours of work...lost???

You may be able to find it on your temp files, if you can get to them. I never can get there on my computer but maybe someone else can guide you though the steps/clicks to get there?

There are companies and products that can help you recover info like this from you computer. It may cost a few bucks, though.

Go to Tools/Options/Save tab, and check the location of the autorecover file

Look in the file that it gives you to see if anything is there.

Ok, go to your start button.
Click on "Run" (on my system is on the left column list of stuff)
In the box that appears, type %temp%
Click on OK.
You SHOULD get a list of all files since you first logged into the computer.

If you sort it by the Date Modified column, you should be able to see the stuff you've worked on most recently.

I know...I know...got to RUN and type in %TEMP% and it'll take you there...but it didn't work because I don't know which .tmp is my Excel...

You'll need to open the most likely one, which is why sorting by date modified would help.

how to recover the unsaved file in excel 2007
i just clicked the dont save option when i closed the window. my auto recover option is on ( for 10 minutes)
please suggest

Had you previously saved this workbook or was it a new one?

If a new one, it is gone. If previously saved, you at least have the workbook without the unsaved changes.

Autorecovery saves a temp file which is available for recovery if Excel crashes with unsaved work.

If you just close out normally the temp file is deleted.

Autorecovery does not save a backup copy nor make incremental saves to the file as you work on it.

Click on the circle button in the upper left hand corner, then select the excel options button at the very bottom of the menu.

Click the SAVE tab on the left. Then see if the Save AutoRecover information is selected. If not you are screwed, it wasn't autosaving. Then look at where the autorecover files are set to save. I believe default is C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\.

Then find that file location & look for files ending in the .xlsb extension.

However, if you opened up excel & nothing happened, there are likely no files to recover. So the above is probably a pointless exercise.

Files are only saved autorecover if there is an unexpected shutdown. If someone came along & closed the program normally & didn't save the work, there would be no recovery file. Since no recover file opened, then odds are either this happened or you don't have the autorecover selected in the options.

Loony, If you never ever saved the file under a name you wanted that's at best a horrible habit. (I don't think double face palm fully expresses my thoughts BTW...)

Anything Microsoft auto saves is to temp files it uses to make it easier(my guess) to buffer reads and writes once you finally decide to write the file. I always save the file to a name I like shortly after starting to create it. I can't imagine working on a file for 4 days straight and never saving it. It reminds me of over twenty years ago at college when I was working the computer room I noticed someone had typed in their entire one page program at the UNIX shell prompt. They had never hit return, must have done tab or something but I was wordless for a moment when I decided to explain how that wasn't going to work.

(I really wanted to do this and walk away but my shift was just starting. )

This is 2007 right? Unless she bought an upgrade herself, she'll have 2003 like I do. My laptop is XP Service Pack 3.

Tloonya, it sounds like you bought M$ Office after all.

If you want to save, you need to buy the deluxe version. The basic version doesn't save. You have to take a picture of the screen to retain your data.
