A comma, dash (not hyphen) or semi-colon can do the same thing, ie create a pause and draw attention to what comes next. All of them are a subtle alert to pay attention to what comes afterwards. The comma is the subtlest, the dash or semi-colon is less subtle. It means, stop and pay attention.
And I'm sure you are ALL wondering why I don't earn Big Bucks for this knowledge LOL!

Find out why "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie was reportedly asked to take off her high heels when standing on set and how NBC responded to reports that the it made the request.

On a fundamental level the written word is only useful insofar as it's a convenient vehicle for expressing thoughts. Does it really matter that much if a story is poorly written grammatically and spelling wise, as long as you can understand the idea behind it? You don't read investigative journalism pieces for the pretty prose, you read them to find out that your governor is embezzling money or whatever. Ideally they'd do both. However, if I had to choose between the two I'd rather see real journalism in lolcatz and txt form than shitty entertainment news that's beautifully written. I don't give a crap how many babies Angelina Jolie wants to adopt, or that some mutt was rescued from a Hurricane. I want to know what my government is up to, what's happening in the world, and how Wall Street is reacting.
Oh, and if I take this side of the argument I don't have to worry about all the typos and grammar atrocities in my posts. Win!

If the writer can't be bothered to check for correct grammar or terminology, how can I be assured that the same lack of attention wasn't applied to fact-checking?
