I was just watching CBS News and they had a piece regarding the increased prevalence of autism and are tying it to the dads age at conception. I'd link the story but I haven't figured out how to do it on an iPad.
What are your thoughts? I'm wondering if the "increase" in autism is actually the increase in labeling kids.

I actually heard the older Dad thing a while ago. After a million years of thinking that men were fertile forever, it turns out their nuts go sour, too.

...I'm with the "better labeling" crowd... so many things are quantifiable now that weren't "yesterday" you know?

We should call our act, "The Mothers Brothers." Like those two brothers in the sixties. Tommy and what's his brother's name???

I think our act needs a lot of work.
But, back to the topic at hand.
I personally think the spectrum is too wide. Any kid that even glances sideways seems to fit onto the spectrum, and then they are marked and we go through this whole thing with them. I think if they just plodded forward, they would learn to deal with the world - just like the rest of us fat ass losers and freaks.

Like Downs? We don't call it that anymore, do we? (I am trying to not become my grandmother who missed the memo that you couldn't say "pickaninny" anymore.) What is it - Trisoma or something like that? At least we don't say Mongoloid anymore. Sheesh!

I think autism is overly diagnosed. I have kids "labeled" autistic in my classroom that I would never have suspected had that disability. They did their work, they interacted sociably with me at least, and so on. They now call this "high functioning autism." You have to remember that it is a spectrum.
I took a special education class (never had one before because the special education laws went into effect in 1977, and I graduated in 1974, but I knew the gist). The teacher said she sometimes worried that her daughter was autistic because she was really focused on astronomy. That was all she cared about at age 5. That is a "symptom" of autism. I thought about my CPA son who could draw maps (and did) of WWII during junior high. He made me buy books about it instead of "fun" books. He isn't particularly sociable (he ate all his lunches in high school with a special education friend even though he was National Merit because he said the special education friend never made fun of anyone). He wouldn't be socialable now at age 33 except his wife is a total extrovert. She completes him.
My point is that he is probably autistic, but REALLY high functioning. So I hate those labels. Autism is real, particularly when it is the head-banging or the Rainman variety. But there are a lot of people diagnosed that are so highly functioning that the autism is negligible. I am willing to bet that a lot of the "geniuses" are border line autistic.
Of course, there is another theory (no joke). Since women have started becoming engineers, etc., the guys at places like MIT have started marrying the women at places like MIT. And these two non-sociable entities have created an epidemic of autistic children. I actually heard or read this somewhere.

Dark mentioned this one, since there is supposedly a high rate of autism in silicon valley/sf bay area. There are a lot of socially awkward nerds round those parts. However, there are also a lot of people getting married and having kids later so... yah.

Here you go: a link that says autism occurs more frequently in physicists, engineers, and mathematicians. [urlhttp://www.autismresearchcentre.com/docs/papers/1998_BCetal_Maths.pdf[/url] Happily, my son found an interior design graduate to procreate with. I love my DIL.
