I thought Puff the magic dragon was a drug reference - just like all those other 60's song.
Although, I like Magic Carpet Ride even more (I always liked it) after I found out it WASN'T about drugs. He wrote it after he got his first stereo and sat on the floor in between the two speakers and was so impressed with the sound of the music, it felt like magic - so he wrote the song. When you listen to it, the song being about a great musical experience makes perfect sense.

I don't know - Roxanne is a great song.
I like Hey there Delilah, too, but I know why it gets panned.

Ok, that song is called "Last Kiss"! All this time, i never knew the name of it! I actually think the Pearl Jam version was better than the original* - at least it was sorta morbid-sounding. the original (J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers, I just double-checked ) was all happy, upbeat pop music. pretty creepy if you ask me. ETA: original chart-topper. the oldies version most people know is actually a cover, which I didn't know until just now.

I never heard that - I just heard that the song is a little manipulative. I like the simple lyrical quality of a guitar and a voice - if done well. But a lot of people don't like the desperation. You are wrong about Roxanne. The Police had such a twisted view on the world. Once you realize how dark all of their lyrics are, and how complicated some of the music is, you can really enjoy it for what it is. But Every breath you take is NOT a love song. Once you realize that it is creepy, you understand why they chose the minor key and the heartbeat rhythm to make you anxious. It is a perfect song. Roxanne is also a song about desperation and an unbalanced relationship/people.

I wonder about Sting. If he were a mere mortal like the rest of us, he'd probably be in jail for stalking. His songs are just creepy.

LOL! I don't know if singing about stalking is a crime - but you wonder how he knows so much about it.

Never paid a lot of attention to his lyrics...know he is still married to the same gal after all these years. I think he had a rough upbringing though???

LOL! I don't know if singing about stalking is a crime - but you wonder how he knows so much about it. He also sang about boinking a student as a teacher, and since he was a teacher prior to making it big, I'm convinced he's unbalanced.

Sounds like he had a prettY normal middle class childhood.

Color me strange, but I tend toward songs with dark lyrics Oh in answer to the OP I almost throw up when I hear You Light Up My Life- they played that more back in the day than the Titanic song

Muskrat Love. That song is hilarious! We always sing that to each other when we are wearing something stupid or look really bad. And for our kitties - like they are singing it when they have their leg up in the air cleaning their butts or when Molly is running through the house with a turd stuck to her butt. DH and I don't need much to crack us up.
