I Read a GREAT Thread on City Data the other day - it was 2 weeks old and 167 pages long, and the original title was "reitrng on a literal shoestring"- there was no bashing, no digression, no bullshit..............
TOO bad we cant incorporate ideas from other forums (or can we?)

No, we shouldn't link out to other threads in THIS thread. We'll have to discuss this one further.
That being said, we could have a similar discussion here if you want to start it.

Any student loan or how to pay for college without indebting yourself forever thread would be a good one.

That one will take some hunting. I didn't personally participate in those so don't remember them off the top of my head. Do you have a nomination?

The J and I have agreed to give this thread a turn at being sticky. Please feel free to continue adding to the list, and I will edit the OP as needed.

The Laws of Humanistics needs to be here under the heading "Social Commentary" or something along those lines.
This is the only place where people get the humor of it.

Hopefully people are finding this thread useful?

"IIRC: If I recall Correctly"
Thank you for posting this! I have always wondered about what IIRC meant. Thank you! I will no longer feel lost.

Dark Honor has a really good post about getting into IT on Doxie's "another stint of unemployment" thread, around page 20 or 21. I nominate Dark's post.

Yes, as this extremely useful post is embedded 20 pages into a silly trainwreck thread, I'll just copy/paste it here.

There was some really good information in the thread about how banks can take money from a person's account to cover an unpaid debt owed to the same bank. Can we link that one here too?

I'm also going to link to this thread from last year where we talked about the difference between Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans and what makes a good plan. notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=finance&action=display&thread=15242&page=1I noticed while I was searching for this thread that we have had a number of threads asking about Long Term Care and Long Term Care Insurance. I don't remember one being particularly more valuable than others, but some might. So I thought I'd nominate that for a category, if someone else remember a really good thread on it.

I think Thyme's thread on enough money - financial planner is generating some good and basic points that some of us (ok, me) need to see spelled out.

If you have the link handy, I'll review the thread and maybe add it. I can find it myself too, it'll just take me a bit longer.

I'd like to nominate my current thread on being laid off , as I've gotten a lot of great advice from the others here without (if I do say so myself) all the drama of a Doxie layoff thread.

Man, I stop in here every once in awhile to read my old threads. They were awesome. I vaguely remember when I used to care about helping people that could care less what I had to say...

You do have some good advice to give about mindsets, and in some cases, methods. From time to time, I think about the idea of getting certified as an insurance adjuster as you did for Texas, then having it grandfathered to my state.
But it has been a while since you waxed poetic about business, hasn't it.

From time to time, I think about the idea of getting certified as an insurance adjuster as you did for Texas, then having it grandfathered to my state. But it has been a while since you waxed poetic about business, hasn't it. That's because owning a business sucks. I should have just gotten a job as an adjuster a long, long, long time ago and put my money into the stock market. Rental houses- pppfffft! But seriously. I've come down to reality on a lot of things- I guess I'm just old. I have everything I ever wanted- more, really. I never thought I'd get this far. And I should be grateful- I should do nothing but pray and meditate and give thanks. And yet- I hate my life sometimes. I still dream of putting it all on autopilot so I can just leave and in ten years come back and find my empire not only in good shape, but vibrant and growing. And yet- I am nowhere near that, and I still don't know how to do it. I just do it all for the kids now. The dream is over. Not really- but I feel like it some days. I have three projects going right now- one of them is a ministry deal, one technology deal for adjusting, and another is a giant aquaponics project and they are all kicking my rear end this week- and for the foreseeable future. The tragedy of back to back hurricanes last year- Isaac and Sandy and the ladder assist business I started mid-storm in NY. Now it all just seems like work. I want to hit the golf course, board a sailboat and head for Atlantis. The resort, not the mythical city.

Obviously you've built revenue streams that are serving you well. You planted these seeds a good many years ago, and now they are bearing fruit.
Whats wrong with the rentals right now? I thought those little 3/2s where people can afford rent, but not the purchasing costs were tremendously profitable? Don't you own a whole block of them in one area?

You once said (probably quoting someone else, but still) that the truly successful look to phase themselves out as soon as possible. That is the difference between a millionaire, and a multi-millionaire. At the same time, NOBODY will take care of your interests with as much determination as you will. Remember that anyone you hire is just one of those pitful wage slaves you have so much contempt for. They don't care about your goals, they will just work at the level they feel they are paid at. If that means the ship sinks while they are steering it, then so be it.
So isn't enough enough? What happened to all that four hour work week stuff?
