Today is YOUR day --- August 13 is International Left handers day.
So who, aside from me is a leftie/southpaw, on this board?

Me. Well, left handed, but right eye dominant, so if it require more hand eye coordination than manual dexterity, I do it right handed. (Examples: I write and use scissors left handed. I shoot and play golf right handed. I bowl equally badly with either hand.)

Good to have a list of people that are rebels, and just plain wrong.

me! (sort of) believe it or not, there were still teachers trying to prevent lefthandedness in the early 80s. so now, I tend to do things based on how I was taught - hockey is lefty shot, mini golf is lefty, volleyball serving is righty for example. I'll still reach for the pen lefty.

Really, Chiver? What was the school of thought on "preventing lefthandedness"?

On my son's baseball team, the coach just kept working with this kid, and working with him, and he just wasn't getting a good swing. After a couple of weeks, he realized the kid was a lefty, and after they moved him over, he was a great hitter!

Really, Chiver? What was the school of thought on "preventing lefthandedness"? who knows? all I know is the woman was ancient enough that they were able to force her to retire after my class. I know I wasn't the only one who she wouldn't teach to write lefty, and she had other parents complaining about other stuff too. my mom told me all this a few years back. thyme, nice!

I had a gymnastics teacher who "didn't believe" in being left handed. She forced me to do cartwheels right handed (and I sucked).

My grandmother absolutely insisted that I hold my knife with my right hand and my fork with my left, even though I'd learned the other way. It was a cultural superstition. In my grandmother's case it had been brought over by her parents from the Ukraine. There are numerous speculations as to the origin. Marshall McLuhan claimed, with some proof, that right-handedness and left-handedness were equally prevalent up until the Renaissance when public literacy rates began to rise. As literacy, mathematics, and rational left-brained thought were emphasized during a child's developmental years, man became a left-brain-dominant haptic creature. And it's scientific fact that the left hemisphere of the brain provides motor control for the right side of the body. Hence the advent of literacy shifted western society into the 90% right-handed one we know today. The medium is the message.

Lefty here. The sisters in Catholic school also tried to "convert" me in 1st grade. My mom marched down to the principal's office and insisted that I be allowed to be left-handed. She won. It was one of (but certainly not the only) best things she did for me :-)

My Mom's a lefty. So I grew up in a left-handed kitchen and have problems with kitchens set up for right handed persons (of which I'm one...)

I found out over the weekend that I have a dominant left nostril, but I'm right eye, hand, and foot dominant.
"Dominant nostril??? You have got to be kidding!" I hear you say. But next time you're tasting wine or beer try holding the glass slightly to the side of your nose on either side, instead of right under, and you'll probably find that you have a better sense of smell on just one side.

There are multiple references to left-handedness in the bible, most of which aren't very complimentary. Being left-handed is associated with the devil.

You can tell this is YMOT and not EE. In EE, the booze could never fully makes it from one side to the other. Complete fiction. If you want to contest that, start a thread about it in the Religious Forum.

One of my sisters is a leftie too. We're all wondering how my kids are going to turn out. Right now, the older one seems to be a rightie and we've got no clue on the younger one (but he can color with his feet...)

Beth: DBro and I both started out ambidextrous. He chose his right hand and I chose my left, but we can both do many things with the other hand. -I can write legibly right handed, I'm just really, really slow at it. I use my mouse with my right hand (which is supposedly right handed), but I can also use it left handed, again, just a little slower.

I'm not saying the Catholics didn't make up all kinds of ridiculous dogma. I'm saying that nowhere in scripture is being left-handed condemned or associated with the Devil. The issue of a person's handedness isn't even mentioned. Having a man or group stand to your right side (as in "a right hand man") is a positive symbol, and by association anyone not on your right side would be on the left. Again, how this relates to which hand you hold a fork with is beyond me, and certainly not proscribed by the Bible.

The Sisters used to rap my knuckles with a ruler to make me change my pencil to my right hand. My mother didn't bother to argue, she just marched me to the public school and enrolled me there and told them why. They let me use my left hand, but the only things I do left-handed are write and eat.
Whatsisname, The Father of My Children, is left-handed, too. All three kids? Right-handed.
One of the definitions of "sinister" is on the left hand or left side! And just for sh*ts and giggles, I googled lefthandedness and discovered all kinds of Bible references, Virg. So there!

I write with my left hand, but I'm fairly ambidextrous. I use my right hand for my computer mouse at work, and left at home, so my wrists don't get tired. My grandmother was left handed. The nuns in her Catholic school would not let her write with her left hand, whacking her hand with a ruler when she did. So when my uncle turned out to be a leftie, she taught him to write with his right hand before he ever got to school.

Google "Christmas" and "Easter" and you'll find all kinds of Bible references too, but Christmas and Easter are nowhere in the Bible.
As I said to Weltz, having a man or group stand on your right hand side is a symbol of respect. It may be arbitrary, or it may not be. It may predate the OT, or it may not. The point is that it's a simple, recognizable symbol. In the same way, "high" is almost always used as a favourable symbol, while "low" is used as an unfavourable symbol.
Weltz' assertion was that left-handedness was viewed unfavourably by the Bible, and connected with the Devil. My rebuttal was twofold: lefthandedness is never even mentioned in the Bible, let alone condemned. And "left", speaking about one's handedness or otherwise, is never associated with the Devil, except perhaps in the pages of some Catholic catechism.
If a Bible considers something important, it says it. More problems in the world churches today are due to damnable individuals adding in laws, rules and interpretations that simply aren't there, than are due to people not following the laws that are scriptural.

We have three right-handed children.
Explain that one. ;D
