Actually, it isn't a poor me story any more than yours is a welcome to the real world story.
In the real world, DH is right a lot. More than I am, which is why he is running the show. I gave him my input, clearly communicated. He listened, showed me respect, and then chose another direction. I let it go.
There is no poor me. I still have a job. I will be able to fill this position easily. It will take time, but I will have a large pool of candidates to choose from.
The point of this wasn't to get sympathy or a "go girl." I was genuinely surprised about how little I enjoyed being right and was genuinely curious about if/how other people had experienced something similar.

...:::"Sometimes the only way to learn and absorb something is to make the mistake and learn from it, not from the words of others.":::...
As I age, I'm believing this more and more. I find that the second an "I told ya so" (or any other attempt to make sure the other person knows that the mistake should be a learning experience) prompts said person to work EXTRA HARD to do the exact opposite of what the lesson should have taught him/her, just to spite.

The key question is that you didn't mention is was he getting his work done? If so, who cares how many browser pages he visited as long as he was getting his work done. Was he supposed to stare at the wall instead? He wanted to be given more tasks when he came back so that he could "show us what he could do" or, in other words, get a raise. He was PM on a big project that wouldn't be done for months. That doesn't really answer my question. What I'm gathering from this is that he asked for more work, you gave it to him, but the results are currently unknown since the project won't be done for months. Maybe he didn't need to be busy all of the time in order to get good results. At my job, I surf the web quite a bit, and still get my work done. Should I draw my work out much longer than I need to just to look busy all the time when the end results would be exactly the same? It's funny how many employers seem to value "working hard" over "working smart". Maybe this guy was doing the latter? Not saying he was, but you haven't given me any info to assume otherwise. In my experience, the people who try to look busy all of the time and keep telling everyone just how busy they are turn out not to be the best workers. They actually need, say, eight hours to do a job that a smart worker can do in two.

Three people tried to give him guidance and mentor him, but he just yeah yeah yeahed them all. But if you have 40k lying around that you would like to pay someone to spend all day playing online, PM me. I have the perfect fit for you.

You could have said that in the first place. Your OP could have simply said "I fired an employee because his work was crap" and everyone would've congratulated you and then I could have used the minutes I spent writing responses for surfing the inter...er... working hard instead. Have I ever told you about how hard I work? Boy, I sure work hard.

Wait until you hit your 60's and discover how wrong you've always been. There is that, but now I am waiting for my 80's to forget how wrong I am now and have always been -> so I'll then be always right again
